Fobbit, by David Abrams

Fobbit ’fä-bit, noun. Definition: A U.S. soldier stationed at a Forward Operating Base who avoids combat by remaining at the base, esp. during Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2011). Pejorative.

In the satirical tradition of Catch-22 and M*A*S*H, Fobbit takes us into the chaotic world of Baghdad’s Forward Operating Base Triumph. The Forward Operating base, or FOB, is like the back-office of the battlefield – where people eat and sleep, and where a lot of soldiers have what looks suspiciously like a desk job. Male and female soldiers are trying to find an empty Porta Potty in which to get acquainted, grunts are playing Xbox and watching NASCAR between missions, and a lot of the senior staff are more concerned about getting to the chow hall in time for the Friday night all-you-can-eat seafood special than worrying about little things like military strategy.

Darkly humorous and based on the author's own experiences in Iraq, Fobbit is a fantastic debut that shows us a behind-the-scenes portrait of the real Iraq war.

“A retired veteran whose 20-year career in the Army included a 2005 tour in Baghdad, Abrams is comfortable and convincing locating the action in Iraq. . . . Fobbit is a vicious skewering of this surprisingly large military subculture of war avoidance.”—TIME

“I applaud David Abrams for sticking to his vision and writing the satire he wanted to write instead of adding to the crowded shelf of war memoirs. In Fobbit, he has written a very funny book, as funny, disturbing, heartbreaking and ridiculous as war itself.”—New York Times Book Review

“Fobbit blends fiction and journalism, an apt reflection of literary influences combined with [Abrams’s] experience in an Army public affairs team. . . . Though absurd, these Dickensian characters are all so skillfully wrought that we quickly accept their idiosyncrasies. . . . What’s most intriguing about this work is that, at its center, it is both a clever study in anxiety and an unsettling expose of how the military tells its truths. Fobbit traces how “the Army story” is crafted, the dead washed of their blood, words scrutinized, and success applied to disasters.”—The Washington Post

“Akin to Catch-22 and M*A*S*H, Fobbit uses pathos and dark humor to present the ugly and banal truth of life in the modern-day war zone. . . . David Abrams [has] set fire to the truth in order to tell it.”—Huffington Post

“An impressive Iraq war satire. . . .[Abrams has] a genuine sense of humor . . . and a productive sense of irony to go with it. Fobbit is an impressive debut and holds out promise for more good things to come.”—Los Angeles Times

“Fobbit seems less interested in what Iraq was like than in where it went wrong. . . . Abrams wants to reveal the comedy and absurdity of these cubicled soldiers - and, through them, of the entire conflict. . . . when it comes to war literature, a comic novel will always do a better job with the big picture. This is the first thing to take from Fobbit.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“A harrowing satire of the Iraq War and an instant classic. . . . Abrams’s prose is spot-on and often deadpan funny . . . This novel nails the comedy and the pathos, the boredom and the dread, crafting the Iraq War’s answer to Catch-22.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Using diaries he kept as a public affairs man in Iraq in 2005, Abrams makes comedy from the clash between positive spin and personal terror."—Men's Journal

“A satire of comfortably numb life during wartime. . . . Abrams spent 20 years in the Army, including a tour of Iraq, and he merely has to lightly fictionalize his observations to point out the absurdities of American occupation.”—Newsweek

“[Fobbit] gives such full-blooded life to the soldiers whose “pale, gooey center” is so antithetical to battlefield heroism that he propels the word into the everyday by the force of his narrative. . . . As mission builds upon mission, lie upon lie, Fobbit builds to its exclamation by terror and by tedium and by laughter. . . . Fobbit makes a sordid music of screams – and makes its mark on Iraq war literature.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune

“Fobbit is hilarious, but the subject matter is deadly serious. This is a remarkable book because it was written by a man who served as a member of an army public relations team in Iraq, i.e. a fobbit himself. It is the rare writer–indeed, the rare person–who can step outside of himself and see with cold clarity the humor and pathos of his situation and then bring the reader to the same understanding. David Abrams is such a writer.”—Karl Marlantes, author of Matterhorn and What It Is Like to Go to War

"Fobbit is fast, razor sharp, and seven kinds of hilarious. It deserves a place alongside Slaughterhouse Five and Catch-22 as one of our great comic novels about the absurdity of war."—Jonathan Evison, author of West of Here

"This delightful, readable, believable and useful book made me furious!"—Tom McGuane

“Fobbit, an Iraq-war comedy, is that rarest of good things: the book you least expect, and most want. It is everything that terrible conflict was not: beautifully planned and perfectly executed; funny and smart and lyrical; a triumph. This debut marks the arrival of a massive talent.”—Darin Strauss, author of Chang and Eng and Half a Life

“[Fobbit] is] like an Office-style satire that happens to be set on a military base in an active war zone. Its villains aren't suicide bombers but hectoring senior officers who make impossible demands.”—Slate.com

“You might not expect an Iraq War novel to be funny, but I laughed—more than once—as I read this one. I cringed, too. There’s simply so much to this book.” —Fiction Writers Review

“Fobbit is a tale of the Iraq war that manages to be as dark as it is funny, which is to say considerably. . . .[Abrams has] written a book that makes you laugh and makes you wince, often at the same time, all the while staying true to its message: that people are foolish on many levels, sometimes fatally so, but they are all motivated by the same basic needs, desires, and fears. . . . There are no heroes here, but no villains either. Each character fights his own war, and nobody wins.”—The Millions

"Truly significant . . . a book about the absurdity of the way the war is fought, the way the war is projected back home, and the massive gulf between the two. . . . a cynical satire in the same vein as the best works of legendary wartime authors like Evelyn Waugh, Kingsley Amis, Kurt Vonnegut, and especially Joseph Heller. Like those authors, Abrams’ book is important for reasons beyond his genre or categorization as well. Perhaps most important, though, is the fact that he challenges Paul Fussell’s argument that the real war cannot be effectively presented in novels."—The Rumpus

“The insanity is linguistic, and Abrams’s dark humor about lying through language would appeal to George Orwell. . . . He is not mocking soldiers. His targets are stateside, residing in naïve government or civilian expectations about ground conditions in Baghdad (and elsewhere) two years after Saddam’s overthrow. . . . Fobbit invites us to laugh over our collective foolishness—foolishness that sometimes includes deaths. That’s the toughest, most painful laughter of all.”—Great Falls Tribune

“The author describes Fobbit as an ‘anti-stupidity’ novel, not an anti-war novel, and with 20 years’ service he has the evidence and flair to write the former. . . . Fobbit is bliss.”—Military Times

“Abrams shows these men and women in their natural habitats, stuck somewhere halfway between the actual violence of war and the goofy excess of American culture.”—Book Riot

“Abrams’s tale is powerful stuff.”—Shelf Awareness

“A unique behind-the-wire glimpse at life in the FOB and the process of “spinning” a war for public consumption. A funny, hard-edged satire about recent history and modern war-making.”—Library Journal

“Sardonic and poignant. Funny and bitter. Ribald and profane.”—Kirkus Reviews

“If Vonnegut and Heller were the undisputed chroniclers of the madness of World War II, Abrams should be considered the resounding new voice of the Iraq War.”—Montana Standard

“Fobbit deserves a wide non-military audience. . . . Abrams, an Iraq war veteran himself, is able to portray not just the pointlessness and stupidity of the occupation but also its absurdity. . . . Fobbit is two things in one – a scathing, deeply felt diatribe against military disasters large and small, and an often-hilarious examination of very human, very weak characters living next door to a combat zone. The good news is that you only have to buy one copy, and you should waste no time in doing so.”—Bookreporter.com

“Abrams has a definite comic talent and a lively turn of phrase. The set-pieces are well done . . . and the dialogue zings back and forth cheerily enough. Abrams is a good writer, in other words. . . . Much of the most interesting material in Fobbit is the stuff that reads like reportage or memoir.”—The Guardian

“Fobbit is a searing view of life on a Forward Operating Base in Iraq and the constant contradictions faced by U.S. soldiers who are told to kick down a door one minute and win ‘hearts and minds’ the next. Funny and evocative, with great glimpses of soldier-speak and deployment day to day life, each laugh in the novel is accompanied with a troubling insight into the different types of battles that our soldiers encounter on a non-traditional battlefield.”—Siobhan Fallon, author of You Know When the Men Are Gone

“Fobbit should be required reading for America. Hilarious and tragic, it’s as if Louis C.K. and Lewis Black provided commentary to The Hurt Locker. There will be innumerable comparisons to Catch-22, but Fobbit, believe me, stands on its own.”—George Singleton, author of Stray Decorum

"A darkly funny chronicle of the Iraq War, Fobbit explores the modern military machine with searing resolve. This is a book that speaks to the power of fiction—a war story too profane and profound for the newspapers and the nightly news. Want to think, laugh and cry, all at the same time? Read this novel."—Matt Gallagher, author of Kaboom

“With a gimlet eye and humor as dry as a desert sandstorm, Abrams captures the absurdist angle of the Iraq war. A direct counterpoint to hero-worshipping “shoot ’em up” combat narratives, Fobbit proves that wit is as lethal a weapon as any Army-issue M16 or .50 cal.”—Lily Burana, author of I Love a Man in Uniform: A Memoir of Love, War, and Other Battles

“The first major work of fiction about America’s war for Iraq.”—Aaron Gwyn, author of Dog on the Cross and The World Beneath

The truest war stories are the ones called fiction
By Nathan Webster
Author David Abrams is a retired Army journalist, my same job when I was active duty many years ago (in fact, Abrams and I were junior enlisted soldiers at the same time, though we never knew each other). As the command's mouthpieces, PAO types were usually treated a little better, with - not more respect - but a slight deference, since it was up to us to get the 'good news' out. The job also meant we saw everything at a higher level than most junior soldiers, but with limited independence to be entirely honest about it. That cynical perspective has accurately found its way into the pages of "Fobbit."

Abrams work tackles many of the Iraq War's absurd contradictions, some of which I witnessed as an embedded journalist. My opinion, both as a veteran and objective journalist, is that Abrams accurately reflects the Iraq War's humor, bitterness and disarray - this is not simply a "war novel," but an "Iraq" novel.

His book represents this clear place and specific time, and I think that's why this story will be a lasting literary contribution. This is what it was, fiction or not. You'll laugh because it's funny; you should weep because it's true.

I'm not sure any previous US conflicts ever had something as surreal as the "FOBs" - the cities-within-cities populated by headquarters elements where much of the book's action takes place. The residents had important jobs to do, but there's no question that a year's deployment at a base where you could play basketball tournaments, watch big-screen movies and eat pecan pie every night would seem an odd switch from the violence and death happening right outside the well-protected gates.

"Fobbit" follows a half-dozen characters that represent a cross-section of Army soldiers, including a battalion commander, company commander, infantry squad leader, public affairs officer, and public affairs NCO. Each meet different fates, both figurative and literal.

Abrams uses multiple points-of-view, and it's impressive how the 'voice' of each character feels unique and individual. He perfectly captures a wartime soldier's enthusiastic cynicism and gleeful bitterness.

The NCO, Chance Gooding, is surely based a little on Abrams himself - and he does the right thing by never making this character any sort of hero. He's pathetic - which is why an audience can connect with him. Abrams makes 'himself' the butt of as many jokes as his other characters. By a wide margin, the infantryman comes across the best.

The most interesting aspect is the unrelenting grind that Abrams' characters experience. As I read, I didn't care what they were doing, as much as what they were thinking, fictionally, on the page. A reader will get a small appreciation for how unrewarding and depressing - but bitterly funny - an Iraq deployment could be.

Because the characters are SO important, and SO vital, it makes the conclusion the weakest part. The story wraps up in a way that puts plot to the forefront, and I cared a lot more about the characters then the plot. Plus, a couple parts strain believability; since the first 300 pages were completely spot-on accurate, it was a bit jarring. Bottom line, this is the kind of story that didn't need to be "concluded" with a conventional wrap-up. It was Abrams hysterical character development that carried the narrative along.

I hope some readers are offended, and complain about Abrams obvious lack of patriotism, his attack on our beloved soldiers, and his mockery of our national war effort - if that happens, then he has succeeded. A book like this proves its value in the irrational criticism that it generates. Anyone who gets angry and says Abrams got it wrong either wasn't there, didn't serve, doesn't know - or maybe Abrams' characters simply hit way too close to home (but those people are unlikely to seek out challenging fiction anyway).

Like the line from Mel Brooks' "The Producers" goes, "It was shocking, outrageous, insulting...and I loved every minute of it!"

Where Courage and Moral Fortitude Are Needed, Spinelessness Abounds
By M. JEFFREY MCMAHON
David Abrams spent twenty years in the military and was in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He uses his experience to show a dark side of that war that we were never supposed to see in his novel Fobbit, which is a literary masterpiece for many reasons. First, you forget you're reading literature of the highest order because Abrams, using pungent, concise, concrete language, ushers you into the complex, in turns hilarious and infuriating world of American Fobbits, military and service people stationed in Iraq who avoid "combat by remaining at the base, esp. during Operation Iraqi Freedom." As Abrams describes it in perfect prose: "They were Fobbits because, at the core, they were nothing but marshmallow. Crack open their chests and in the space where their hearts should be beating with a warrior's courage and selfless regard, you'd find a pale, gooey center."

The spineless characters who populate this book will enrage and infuriate the reader as they scan the internet for engagement rings, eat Hostess Ding Dongs and look for clandestine places to fornicate as the real soldiers are dying horrible deaths from IEDs.

Second, the book succeeds at a purely entertainment level reminding me of a Christopher Guest mockumentary. The plot juxtaposes the agony of the real war outside the gates and the banality and cowardice of those bathing in the comforts within the compound.

Third, Fobbit is a morally necessary book that takes a critical look at war and the way politicians spin the war to make it palatable for American citizens. As such, Fobbit is a moral, anti-BS book and Fobbit fills the bill to the a T. One of its major themes is how public relations director Chance Gooding Jr. spends his time cowering in his cubicle writing war propaganda while deep down loathing himself and the operation he claims to champion. Abrams describes Gooding as a well insulated coward: "With his neat-pressed uniform, his lavender-vanilla body wash, and the dust collected around the barrel of his M16 rifle, he was the poster child for the stay-back-stay-safe soldier. The smell of something sweet radiated off his skin--as if he bathed in gingerbread." I was spellbound by these nuggets of perfectly crafted, scornful, at times sarcastic description that fill this novel and show the narrator's contempt for bull****. In fact, as I read this novel I kept thinking of a slim best-selling nonfiction book by philosopher Harry Frankfurt called On Bull****.

Fobbit is a great companion piece to a book about the way we become numb to all the bull that inundates us everyday. Fobbit is a novel that cuts through the bull that neatly and sweetly packages absurd, hypocritical, often morally bankrupt wars and it is done in a way that is not preachy. This novel is real, concrete, and has the power of someone who has been there, in the deepest recesses, and has survived to tell us the true tale.

Decent read, but don't expect a classic
By Ammy_Evaluator
I did complete the book, and enjoyed many parts of it (such as the unique "mortar-round-on-a-mission" perspective and the unique PoVs via letters and diary entries), but I could not quite sink comfortably into it.

For one, the characters fit too conveniently into overly clean categories that seem more mean-spirited than funny:
# Officers = Incompetent.
# Fobbits = Cowards and Propagandists.
# Infantrymen and NCOs = Competent but hobbled by aforementioned Officers and Fobbits.

Second, every Officer/Fobbit in this story:
a) either wets his pants, splits his uniform buttons due to dessert over-indulgence, longs for his wife's bosom, or is a PowerPoint-freak.
b) has an emasculating (Shrinkle or Stacie) or derisory (Fledge-'ling') name.
c) encounters a series of Michael Scott-like situations that are more uncomfortable than funny.
d) meets up with an ignominous end (the book hints at some of these ends along the way).

In conclusion, this is a fair read, as long as you have realistic expectations from it. I could not rate it at more than an "It's Okay" (3 stars).

Almost every day my homeschooled daughter needs help on her math, and I can't help her much because this book does not explain anything. I've been homeschooling for years, and never have I come across a math book with absolutely no pretense at explaining the material in each chapter. I can't understand the other reviews raving about this book. We are definitely changing books mid-year.

About 60% is Algebra 2
By TexasTeacher
I like the layout, and the step-by-step explanations, but Algebra 2 doesn't start until Chapter 7, with logarithms. The first 6 chapters are a review of Algebra 1, which is good, if you have holes in your Algebra 1 understanding. The one issue I have, and it lost one star in my review, is that it tries to cover so much that there are not enough practice problems. This really needs to be two volumes, and there is a real need for Precal instruction before there is confidence in understanding Calculus.

Social Science Concepts, by Gary Goertz

Concepts lie at the core of social science theory and methodology. They provide substance to theories; they form the basis of measurement; they influence the selection of cases. Social Science Concepts: A Users Guide explores alternative means of concept construction and their impact on the role of concepts in measurement, case selection, and theories.

While there exists a plethora of books on measurement, scaling, and the like, there are virtually no books devoted to the construction and analysis of concepts and their role in the research enterprise. Social Science Concepts: A Users Guide provides detailed and practical advice on the construction and use of social science concepts; a Web site provides classroom exercises.

It uses a wide range of examples from political science and sociology such as revolution, welfare state, international disputes and war, and democracy to illustrate the theoretical and practical issues of concept construction and use. It explores the means of constructing complex, multilevel, and multidimensional concepts. In particular, it examines the classic necessary and sufficient condition approach to concept building and contrasts it with the family resemblance approach. The consequences of valid concept construction are explored in both qualitative and quantitative analyses.

Social Science Concepts: A Users Guide will prove an indispensable guide for graduate students and scholars in the social sciences. More broadly, it will appeal to scholars in any field who wish to think more carefully about the concepts used to create theories and research designs.

For Course Use:

Social Science Concepts: A Users Guide has been written with classroom use in mind. Many of the chapters have been successfully taught at the Annual Training Institute on Qualitative Research Methods which is sponsored by the Consortium on Qualitative Research Methods. Feedback from those experiences has been incorporated into the text. Each chapter provides useful, practical, and detailed advice on how to construct, evaluate, and use concepts. To make the volume more useful, an extensive set of classroom exercises is available from the author's Web page at http://www.u.arizona.edu/~ggoertz/social_science_concepts.html. These include questions about prominent published work on concepts, measures, and case selection; in addition there are logic exercises and questions regarding large-N applications.

Review
Winner of the 2007 Giovanni Sartori Book Award

"This book will primarily appeal to the social science methodologist...the analysis of concept formation is interesting [and] it clearly contributes to the methodological debate."--Timothy J. White, European Legacy

From the Back Cover

"Gary Goertz is at the forefront of a number of important methodological debates. He is one of the very few scholars who regularly crosses the boundary between quants and quals, and this book reflects his strength in both areas."--John Gerring, Boston University

"Goertz reaffirms with great success a foundational idea established more than three decades ago by Giovanni Sartori: concept analysis is an indispensable component of social science methodology, and we neglect it at our peril."--David Collier, University of California, Berkeley

"One of the greatest challenges facing the social sciences today is the task of cultivating a closer connection between theoretical concepts and empirical analysis. In this book, Gary Goertz lays the foundation for a new approach to social scientific concepts and demonstrates the many benefits that follow from the thoughtful articulation of concepts in social research."--Charles Ragin, University of Arizona at Tucson, author of Fuzzy-Set Social Science

About the Author
Gary Goertz is Professor of Political Science at the University of Arizona. He is the author of "Contexts of International Politics and International Norms" and "Decision Making: A Punctuated Equilibrium Model", and the coauthor of "War and Peace in International Rivalry".

A nice overview of a complex art
By A Customer
A good book for someone with no bonsai experience. The authors keep the basics of bonsai simple and point the novice in the right direction. Although it would be a good reference to have handy while attempting that first Juniper, the beginner would do well to read other books before going further.

A paleontologist awakens us to the "extinction event" that human activity is bringing about today

The natural world as humans have always known it evolved close to 100 million years ago, with the appearance of flowering plants and pollinating insects during the age of the dinosaurs. Its tremendous history is now in danger of profound, catastrophic disruption. In Terra, a brilliant synthesis of evolutionary biology, paleontology, and modern environmental science, Michael Novacek shows how all three can help us understand and prevent what he (and others) call today's "mass extinction event."

Humanity's use of land, our consumption, the pollution we create, and our contributions to global warming are causing this crisis. True, the fossil record of hundreds of millions of years reveals that wild and bounteous nature has always evolved not quietly but thunderously, as species arise, flourish, die off, and are replaced by new species. We learn from paleontology and archaeology that for 50,000 years, human hunting, mining, and agriculture have changed many localities, sometimes irrevocably. But today, Novacek insists, our behavior endangers the entire global ecosystem. And if we disregard—through ignorance, antipathy, or apathy—the theory of evolution that developed with our modern understanding of the Earth's past, we not only impede enlightenment but threaten any practical strategy for our own survival.

The evolutionary future of the entire living planet depends on our understanding this.

From Publishers Weekly
Paleontologist Novacek (Time Traveler) tells the story of our ecosystem and warns that humans are transforming it so drastically that it may not be habitable in the future. Discussing the evolutionary processes that led to the diversification of all life, he asserts that people who reject the theory of evolution impede efforts to preserve the ecosystem because they ignore the importance of biological diversity. To demonstrate biodiversity's crucial role, he considers the evolution of flowering plants and the myriad insect species that pollinate them, stressing that as we decimate these insect populations, we interfere with the very core of what has been built by evolution. Extinction is normal during the course of evolution, but studies cited by the author show that every year tens of thousands of species may now be going extinct, thousands of times faster than they would naturally do so, as humans exploit the ecosystem by cutting forests, exhausting sources of fresh water, polluting the air, destroying habitats, depleting the ocean and introducing invasive species to new habitats. We can avoid this, Novacek contends, if we learn to appreciate the history of our ecosystem in all its beauty and complexity, and have the will to reverse our destructive course. His timely book, with its wealth of lucidly presented information, should go a long way toward promoting this appreciation. (Nov.)

Review

“This beautifully written volume draws on a lifetime of experience with fossil organisms to place the challenges of the present in context. Clearly written, and filled with wisdom and hope for the future, Terra should be read by everyone who cares about the future of our planet and wants to do something about it.” ―Peter H. Raven, President, Missouri Botanical Garden and George Engelmann Professor of Botany, Washington University in St. Louis

“This is a great read. Michael Novacek's book vividly portrays the human folly and cavalier disregard for Terra, our only home, and he puts the environmental crisis in its most profound context. This is a masterful hundred-million-year biography of our unique planet of life--how it came to be, how it works.” ―Thomas Lovejoy, President, The Heinz Center for Science, Economics and the Environment

“Terra is a much needed book on the human condition that could have been written only by a paleontologist with a thorough, field-based knowledge of evolutionary and environmental biology. Starting with the birth of Earth's modern ecosystems, in the Age of Dinosaurs, Novacek explains how the living environment came together in a way that yielded humanity, and why our careless destruction of it is a profound and eternal loss.” ―Edward O. Wilson, Harvard University

“Terra is one of the important books of our time--and it will change the way you think about the world around you. Novacek's coup is that he not only brings the past to life but shows how it holds the keys to our future. The extraordinary breadth of his accomplishments as a scientist gives his book a powerful combination of authority, wit, and humanity. Reading Terra, it is hard not to feel humbled being a steward of a planet so ancient, wondrous, and fragile as our own.” ―Neil Shubin, Provost, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago

Extraordinary
By Invictus
I have read many science books, particularly in the area of biology, and cannot recall having read any biological work as good as Terra. But I am an old man and perhaps have forgotten.

It is true that the book is not particularly easy to read, but only because the author has diligently tried to compress a lot of information into it. My feeling is that since he has taken so much trouble to write this magnificent work, he is entitled to have me take a fair bit of trouble to read it. It must surely be at least one of the best books ever written for non-specialists on the history of life on Earth.

Any person who is an evolutionist -- and there are supposed to be many -- would find it a challenge to read the work and adhere to his or her former views.

Novacek, though he says little about himself, must be a very fine fellow. His enthusiasm for the histories of species gone millions of years ago is infectious. And of course, what he has to say is relevant to the here and now; it makes one takes seriously the possibility that we attach too much importance to our human squabbles and prejudices, when our species itself may turn out to be simply a relatively short phase in the life of the Earth.

Accessible and serious
By Bryan Walker
The book is readily accessible to the non-scientist and offers many insights into the complexities of the evolution of our ecosystem. It is full of fascinating detail always tied into a broad overall picture. Darwin's theory of evolution is seen as essential to our understanding of our past and of the dangers which now confront us. (Novacek was involved in the splendid Darwin exhibition put together by the American Museum of Natural History which I was fortunate to be able to see when it was recently brought to the Auckland Museum here in New Zealand.)

Novacek writes very well. In style his book is a happy combination of relaxed, sometimes personal, narrative and authoritative general overview.

Although a pleasant and interesting read Terra carries the deeply serious message that we are on the verge of a species extinction of massive proportions and that we must (and hopefully can) take the necessary steps to avert catastrophic climate change.

As a general reader interested in Darwinian evolution and deeply concerned at the dangers posed by anthropogenic global warming I found myself deeply engaged by this book.

To Pillage the Garden:
By LastRanger
Paleontologist Michael Novacek has written another fine book. Terra is nothing less than the story of life on earth and the ecological forces that govern its evolution. A chance encounter with a wayward hyena starts you on a journey through time, from life's raw beginning over 500m YBP through the long eons of changing conditions to, at last, the world of today. The author covers a variety of subjects and addresses some of the vital issues that threaten our present day ecosystems. From the start, life has faced one challenge after another; changing climate, moving into new habitats, invaders from other habitats and geological forces that push life to the brink of extinction. With each barrier breached comes a new beginning for any organisms that survive the change. Extinction and recovery are a recurring theme for life on earth and Novacek covers the three main ones in some detail; the end Permian event that seems to be the biggest one yet, the K/T event that ended the Mesozoic and ushered in the Cenozoic and the mysterious event just within the last 13,000 years that saw the end of some Mega-Fauna in many parts of the world. What caused these extinctions: volcanoes, extraterrestrial impacts, major climate change or a combination of causes? Humans may have had a hand in the last one. Each theory proposed spurs intense controversy and endless debate that shows no sign of letting up. But there's more to Terra than just past extinction. Humans have been exploiting the natural world for most of our history but starting with the industrial revolution things really took off. Decades of harmful land use, unrestrained consumption of natural resources, pollution on a unprecedented scale all put our present day ecosystem at risk. Terra is truly a marvelous book and no review, including this one, can do it justice. The full breadth and range of the author's knowledge on the many subjects covered in Terra is astounding. You may not agree with all of his conclusions but if you'r at all interested in the history of life on earth, the current health of our ecosystem and what role humans are playing in the environmental problems that we are now facing then you may find this to be a fascinating read. In 1962 Rachel Carson published Silent Spring and now, some 50 years later, Michael Novacek gives us a 21st Century take on some of the same issues.
I had no technical problems with this Kindle edition.

Breakfast with Lucian: The Astounding Life and Outrageous Times of Britain's Great Modern Painter, by Geordie Greig

An insider's account—the first of its kind—of the thoroughly unconventional life of one of the twentieth century's most shockingly original painters

Lucian Freud's paintings are instantly recognizable: often shocking and disturbing, his portraits convey a profound yet compelling sense of discomfort. Freud was twice married and the father of at least a dozen children, and his numerous relationships with women were the subject of much gossip—but the man himself remained a mystery. An intensely private individual (during his lifetime he prevented two planned biographies from being published), Freud's life, as well as his art, invites questions that have had no answer—until now.
In Breakfast with Lucian, Geordie Greig, one of a few close friends who regularly had breakfast with the painter during the last years of his life, tells an insider's account—accessible, engaging, revealing—of one of the twentieth century's most fascinating, enigmatic, and controversial artists. Greig, who has studied his subject's work at length, unravels the tangled thread of a life lived on Freud's own uncompromising terms. Based on private conversations in which Freud held forth on everything from first love to gambling debts to the paintings of Velázquez, and informed by interviews with friends, lovers, and some of the artist's children who have never before spoken publicly about their relationships with the painter, this is a deeply personal memoir that is illuminated by a keen appreciation of Freud's art. Fresh, funny, and ultimately profound, Breakfast with Lucian is an essential portrait—one worthy of one of the greatest painters of our time.

*Starred Review* Lucian Freud (1922–2011), “the greatest realist figure painter of the twentieth century,” went audaciously far beyond “nude” to shockingly naked and forever changed portraiture. Greig tells the astonishing story behind some of Freud’s most disturbing paintings and wryly observes that Freud and Sigmund, his famous grandfather, had a lot in common since it was also “Lucian’s business to get people to sit on beds or couches, and to reveal more about themselves than perhaps they wished to show.” Ironically, Lucian was a fiend for privacy, refusing interviews and derailing would-be biographers. Greig, a prominent newspaper editor, managed to get close to Freud during the painter’s last decade, meeting him regularly for breakfast near his London home and studio. Freud spoke expansively about his tumultuous and maniacal life, from his Jewish German family’s escape from the Nazis to his starving-artist years. Impudent, ambitious, and voracious, Freud did have a lot to hide. His prodigious sex life, a dizzying carousel of simultaneous partners, resulted in at least 14 children. Because he often paid his enormous gambling debts with paintings, a bookie owns the world’s largest private Lucian Freud collection. Greig’s vivid, swiftly flowing, bracingly candid, alluringly illustrated chronicle of the exploits and accomplishments of this renowned renegade artist is as arresting, discomfiting, and unforgettable as a Freud portrait. --Donna Seaman

Review

“Breakfast with Lucian is a superb, flawlessly crafted portrait of about as messy a life as was ever lived . . . out of which emerged the greatest British painter of the past one hundred years.” ―Tom Wolfe

“Both tender biography and blunt revelation . . . It is the most important book yet written on Freud.” ―Brian Sewell, The Evening Standard (London)

“Geordie Greig's book is an unapologetic mixture of intelligent perception and high gossip. It deepens the reader's understanding of Lucian Freud, as both man and artist . . . No person interested in Freud will ignore this book. It is, overall, more revealing than anything about him yet written.” ―Frances Spalding, The Guardian

“Lucian Freud was a dedicated artist. I once heard him say, ‘I will paint myself to death.' The artist was also a dedicated social butterfly. In the middle of the art and the women, titled people were never far away. Both aspects of the life would have made for a repetitive story. Geordie Greig has overcome this double hazard to write a gripping and elegant and original book, shapely and full of unexpected matter. It will surely establish him as a master biographer.” ―V. S. Naipaul

“Geordie Greig has written an extraordinary, candid book that is at times intensely shocking and at other times even more intensely moving.” ―Antonia Fraser

“Breakfast with Lucian, Geordie Greig's juicy, eye-popping book about Lucian Freud . . . offers a fond but by no means whitewashed account of how Freud's spectacularly messy life relates to his extraordinary body of work . . . Along with Freud's sexual profligacy and self-destructive passion for gambling, Greig captures the intensity of the artist's ambition and drive, his exacting work ethic and his numerous ‘splintered' friendships, including with fellow artist Francis Bacon. Greig's own friendship with Freud provides access to the chaos and squalor of his home and studio--littered with used brushes, flicked paint splotches and the carcasses of half-eaten dinners. His portrait comes alive with descriptions of Freud's ‘ferret-thin figure,' ‘shabby-chic style,' penchant for silk scarves, nougat candy, wads of cash and hair-raising drives in his brown Bentley . . . Greig's book, a rare case in which the text and illustrations are equally gripping, brings into sharp focus this bold iconoclast who ‘pushed boundaries, artistic as well as sexual.' Even better, it makes us look more closely and deeply--and see more.” ―Heller McAlpin, The Los Angeles Times

“Lucian Freud was the greatest figurative painter of the 20th century, says Geordie Greig in his spirited new book, Breakfast with Lucian . . . [a] highly readable life of the artist . . . Mr Greig's is a compelling portrait of a complete amoralist who became a monstre sacré.” ―The Economist

“Greig tells the astonishing story behind some of Freud's most disturbing paintings and wryly observes that Freud and Sigmund, his famous grandfather, had a lot in common since it was also ‘Lucian's business to get people to sit on beds or couches, and to reveal more about themselves than perhaps they wished to show.' Greig's vivid, swiftly flowing, bracingly candid, alluringly illustrated chronicle of the exploits and accomplishments of this renowned renegade artist is as arresting, discomfiting, and unforgettable as a Freud portrait.” ―Donna Seaman, Booklist (starred review)

“[An] admiring but acerbic biography of the painter . . . The Freud who emerges in this account is a slippery figure, not only for journalists who tried to explain him but also for his intimates.” ―The New Yorker

“Greig interviewed Freud . . . and many of his intimates and tells an astonishing story of appetite and accomplishment. He follows the painter from childhood to the grave, fills the book with photographs of the author and his work, and expands our notion of the capabilities of the human male . . . Greig also follows the arc of Freud's career, which took years to flower but bore plenty of fruit once it did.” ―Kirkus

“A personal, anecdotal, and utterly charming book that makes you feel you've pulled up a chair and joined [Geordie Greig and Lucian Freud] for a spot of tea. If only.” ―Lucas Wittmann, The Daily Beast

“Granted access to colleagues and models and lovers and children who, confronted by an outsider, would have kept schtum, he gains a series of often surprisingly frank interviews, the contents of which he weaves into a compulsively readable life . . . Greig's considerable powers as a tour guide of character, his well-trained eye for the detail along with his insightful study of art . . . [makes for] a riveting anecdotal portrait . . . Here is Freud from many facets: compulsive gambler, the underworld figure, the high-cultural Casanova, the social climber, the devious schemer, the affectionate dad. Even oft-told stories regain a first-person freshness . . . Everywhere there are fascinating nuggest. Some illuminate his paintings . . . Most cast a strong light, and often a harsh one, on his character . . . Breakfast with Lucian is a fond, fair-minded, thankfully non-judgmental and pretty full portrait of a person.” ―Rachel Campbell-Johnston, The Times (London)

“In addition to having conducted some of contemporary art's biggest interviews, Greig had the rare pleasure of becoming one of Freud's few close friends towards the end of the artist's life. The two regularly shared breakfast, and it was from these early morning conversations that Greig drew much of the content in Breakfast with Lucian. Greig provides a personable inside look at an unconventional, much speculated about life. Freud speaks to Greig with varying casualness, revealing personal foibles and interests (he was an avid gambler), thoughts on, of course, his art and that of others' (amongst them Spanish Baroque painter Diego Velázquez) and something more universal: first love. Lending greater depth to this memoir of sorts are thoughts from friends, romantic partners and even some of Freud's children, some who've never publicly spoken about their relationships with the painter. Breakfast with Lucian is the book art biographers have been chasing (Freud had twice denied proposed biographies). Considering their fruitless efforts, what Greig sits on top of, on the cusp of unveiling to the world, is one of the art world's most eagerly anticipated peeks over a spiked electric fence. Art aficionados: Breakfast with Lucian: The Astounding Life and Outrageous Times of Britain's Great Modern Painter is not one to be missed.” ―Leslie Ken Chu, Vancouver Weekly

“Breakfast with Lucian brims with quotations from Freud's lovers, children, friends, sitters, dealers and associates, as well as from the artist himself . . . My favourite passages are those in which Greig quotes chunks of his interviews with Freud: in a flash, it feels as though we are chatting with the artist over a cup of tea, privy to his mischievous, witty and unbuttoned recollections . . . Greig also records Freud's destructive idiosyncrasies, while the final chapter, which deals with the artist's death and its aftermath, is heartfelt and upsetting.” ―Alastair Sooke, The Telegraph

“Geordie Greig, who knew him well, here reveals more about [Lucian] Freud than has ever been in print before . . . The book is excellent on Freud's extraordinary charisma, which worked its magic equally on women, men, animals and children. An especially charming passage--with accompanying photographs--describes Freud's easy playfulness with Greig's young children. The dark glamour is here, too . . . The best portraits bring their sitters vividly to life, and this book does just that. There can be no greater compliment than to say that Greig makes the reader feel exactly as if they have met Lucian Freud.” ―Cressida Connolly, The Spectator

“Geordie Greig's fascinating biography reveals a compelling but chaotic life which, until Freud's death in 2011, was largely kept veiled in secrecy by his family, friends and ex-lovers . . . The bio reveals Freud to have been a series of paradoxes . . . Greig, a former Tatler editor, revels in tracing the web of unlikely, unwieldy relationships that the artist liked to keep highly separate.” ―James Lane, 3 News

“We learn about the long and complicated personal life of Freud, as well as the techniques he employed as a painter, as a result of the informal meetings and breakfasts Greig had with him . . . Greig masterfully mixes hard-core biography with snippets of Q & A dialogue he conducts with Freud's lovers and children and Freud himself to create a memorable portrait of a portraitist. And because Greig spent so much time in the company of Freud's paintings and studio, he has earned the right to be psychoanalytical about the grandson of the world's most famous psychoanalyst . . . the reader feels by the time the paint has dried that he has been in the company of the artist.” ―David Masello, The Santa Fe New Mexican

“Greig has done a lot of legwork--tracking down lovers and confidantes and subjects of Freud's work, including Raymond Jones, who posed for the . . . painter's first full-length nude. Jones's account of sitting is revealing of the twin obsessions of Freud's life.” ―Tim Adams, The Observer

“Greig has drawn on interviews with those who knew Freud intimately--comprising countless girlfriends, models, dealers and bookmakers--to piece together the previously inexplicable existence of a man who compartmentalised all avenues of his life, as well as his anecdotes ranging from sleeping with horses to painting the Queen . . . Thoughtfully, he compares Freud to a cultural Forrest Gump of the 20th century, or an artistic incarnation of influential English rock band The Sex Pistols: ‘Every interesting and extraordinary person of the cultural and social world seemed to pass before him, yet at the same time he was this incredibly hardworking, obsessive painter.'” ―Alex Bellotti, The Hampstead and Highgate Express

“Geordie Greig, a journalist and close friend of Freud's during the latter years of his life, provides an unobstructed view into the artist's professional and private in his new memoir, Breakfast with Lucian . . . Greig delves into Freud's rarely-discussed personal life, from his burning temper . . . to his excessive gambling . . . to his close friendship with Bacon.” ―Erin Cunningham, The Daily Beast

The title tells it all.
By Jill Meyer
Do the "special people", the ones who have shown outstanding talents in the arts, sports, etc, deserve to be judged differently by society? Does their "greatness" exempt them from the same rules that seem to govern the rest of us? If so, then surely one example of this is the life of the late artist, Lucian Freud. Freud, grandson of Sigmund Freud, was a leading artist in the second half of the 20th century. He was known for his portraits; incredible and penetrating looks into the face, figure, and attendant ambiance of the sitter.

Lucian Freud was the middle son of three born to Lucie and Ernst Freud, in Berlin, in 1922. Ernst didn't follow his father into medicine - he became an architect - but Lucian, in a way, followed his father into the arts. The family saw the political "light" rather early on and moved to London in 1933. Did being Jewish in Germany, being German in England, give Lucian a sort of "outsider" mentality that he carried into his work? Beats me; maybe grandpa Sigmund could have given an answer to that. But Sigmund died in England in 1939 and so never knew his grandson past his youthful years.

Young Freud was an "enfant terrible" in his early years as a painter. (Actually, he was an "enfant terrible" his entire life!) Beginning in the 1940's, Freud found growing fame as an artist and also as a lover of women (and in some cases, men). He was married twice and had four children by his first wife. In all, he had 14 "acknowledged" children and possibly more who he never acknowledged. Using birth control was obviously never real high on his list of life priorities; though neither was it high to the six or so women he impregnated. A lackadaisical father - at best - Freud rarely seemed to let the responsibilities of fatherhood impinge on his life or his work. Several of his children posed for him - in some cases, nude - and while the "ick" factor is pretty high there, none of the kids seemed to find anything amiss. He was close to some of this lovers and wives and distant with others. Some family members had his private telephone number and others didn't. He was probably closer to his bookies - he was an prodigious gambler - and many of his business deals involved selling paintings to pay off his debts. He also used his bookies as portrait subjects.

Lucian Freud actually used a lot of different people as subjects. Another excellent book on Freud and his art is "Man With a Blue Scarf: On Sitting for a Portrait by Lucian Freud", by Martin Gayford, is still in print and well-worth reading. And his portraits... One of my greatest personal joys was seeing the massive exhibit of Freud's work at London's "National Portrait Gallery" after his death in 2011. No paintings in a book, no matter how well reproduced, can approach the vividness of seeing the work on the museum's walls. Many of his paintings are huge and can capture the eye and the mind for hours.

Okay, Lucian Freud lived an unconventional life. Still seducing young women, he fathered his last child at the age of 62 with a woman younger than many of his older children. He was secretive to the max and lived in a fairly furtive manner. He squashed the publication of two biographies and his fellow artists and family and friends all knew not to talk to the press. So how did this book get written?

Geordie Greig is a journalist and editor of the "Tatler" and a life-long art lover. He had been following Freud's career since he had been a student at Eton, and was looking for a way to meet the reclusive painter. In the mid-1990's he approached Freud by letter and Freud agreed to meet with him. This one meeting in a private room in a public cafe that Freud used as his breakfast shop resulted in a 15 or so year friendship. Freud openly talked about his life, work, and loves with the proviso that a book could be written using the material and published after his death. (In case you're wondering, Gayford's book is more about "sitting" for Freud than about Freud's life. That book was published before Freud's death).

The only complaint I have about Greig's book is the lack of many photos of Lucian Freud's work. I assume it was a matter of not getting "rights" to publish them but it's a bit disappointing not to see the pictures the author refers to in the text. But I think a site like "Wiki images" may have some. I remember many of the paintings from the 2012 exhibit in London. One painting that isn't in the book - but referred to - and probably the reader should try to find is "The Brigadier", which is a portrait of Andrew Parker Bowles. Parker Bowles - the first husband of Camilla Parker Bowles, Prince Charles's wife - is a heavy-weight in his own world and the subject of a Freud painting that shows a man at ease with his own power. It's quite stunning.

Georgie Grieg's book is well worth reading for its intimate look at a great painter. Greig and Freud may have become friends in Freud's later years, but Greig writes a powerful book about Freud's whole life.

The life in each day of Lucian - great book for anyone interested in creativity
By Michelle Dunn
I am an acrylic artist and am always reading about art and other artists. I found this book Breakfast with Lucian to be very interesting and a good read. It is interesting to me to learn what other artists did in order to continue to create often and what their routines and funny quirks are or were. This book is similar to some others I have read that outline the day in a life of a particular artist. This book is a great look into the life and creative mind of Lucian.

Gossip with Crumpets
By ShrewdShopper
Full disclosure, I'm a painter who has followed the work of Lucien Freud for many years so I'm predisposed to liking anything I read about him. There were times, however, when I'd have felt like I needed to shower after reading Breakfast With Lucien if it hadn't had that erudite British voice behind it. Gossipy bordering on trashy. It made me not like Lucien very much and somehow never really explained how his charm and charisma made up for all his dicey behavior. Evidently it did because the people in his life, according to Mr. Greig, were tremendously loyal and forgiving, but I'd have liked to have a deeper explanation of why. I thought the much better book about Lucien was The Man With the Blue Scarf by Martin Gayford. But if you like the inside dirt (with the emphasis on dirt) about an artist then you'll certainly enjoy Breakfast With Lucien.
