Perpetua's Passions: Multidisciplinary Approaches to the Passio Perpetuae et FelicitatisFrom Oxford University Press

Perpetua's Passions is a collection of studies about Perpetua, a young female Christian martyr who was executed in 203 AD. Like her spiritual guide, Saturus, Perpetua left a diary, and a few years after their deaths a fellow Christian collected these writings and supplied them with an introduction and epilogue: the so-called Passion of Perpetua. The result is one of the most fascinating and enigmatic works of antiquity, which the present volume examines from a wide range of perspectives: literary, narratological, historical, religious, psychological, and philosophical viewpoints follow upon a newly edited text and English translation (by Joseph Farrell and Craig Williams). This innovative treatment by a number of distinguished scholars not only complements its unique subject, but constitutes a kind of laboratory of new approaches to ancient texts.

Mikäel (Otras voces) (Spanish Edition), by Herman Bang

Alberto Mira

This Is Not Sufficient: An Essay on Animality and Human Nature in Derrida, by Leonard Lawlor

Derrida wrote extensively on "the question of the animal." In particular, he challenged Heidegger's, Husserl's, and other philosophers' work on the subject, questioning their phenomenological criteria for distinguishing humans from animals. Examining a range of Derrida's writings, including his most recent L'animal que donc je suis, as well as Aporias, Of Spirit, Rams, and Rogues, Leonard Lawlor reconstructs a portrait of Derrida's views on animality and their intimate connection to his thinking on ethics, names and singularity, sovereignty, and the notion of a common world.

Derrida believed that humans and animals cannot be substantially separated, yet neither do they form a continuous species. Instead, in his "staggered analogy," Derrida asserts that all living beings are weak and therefore capable of suffering. This controversial claim both refuted the notion that humans and animals possess autonomy and contradicted the assumption that they possess the trait of machinery. However, it does offer the foundation for an argument-which Lawlor brilliantly and passionately defines in his book-in which humans are able to will this weakness into a kind of u nconditional hospitality. Humans are not strong enough to keep themselves separate from animals. In other words, we are too weak to keep animals from entering into our sphere. Lawlor's argument is a bold approach to remedying "the problem of the worst," or the complete extermination of life, which is fast becoming a reality.

A Fine Work of Continental Philosophy
By Martin Rowe
Complex and densely written--full of the allusive wordplay one expects from continental philosophy and critical theory--this book is deeply suggestive in the best sense of the word: it points to fascinating and fruitful lines of inquiry about our relationships with animals; by which is meant, a relationship with ourselves. Don't look for prescriptions or proscriptions; just allow the mind to explore the range and depth of Derrida's (and Lawlor's) thinking throughout Derrida's corpus. Some lines of thought--particularly on globalization and sovereignty--felt strained in their relation to animals, but in general this is one of those books that continue to grow in the mind and warrant close and respectful re-reading.

Another fascinating insight into history
By rebelmomof2
I read this book in two days ~~ I couldn't put it down. John Jake focuses on Philip Kent again and this time, introduces a new character, a dissolute drunkard from the Virginian plantation families ~~ Judson Fletcher. Philip is sent to the front to fight while his wife, Anne, stays behind with their son. Judson meanders between his father's plantation, and Philadelphia and Richmond.

This book is more intense on the war ~~ describing the conditions of Valley Forge where the men encamped for a bitter winter. They describe more battle scenes that makes you feel like you're right there having a sunstroke with the men. It gives you a glimpse of the hardships these men fought, despaired over and died for. Like Paine said, "These are the times that try a man's soul." It's not exactly a wonderful read but the author wasn't too brutal in describing the wartime scenes.

And it's a reminder of what the men of the Revolution fought for.

It is a good book ~~ perfect for those long winter nights. If you like history and fiction, this book is among the best combination of the two!

Guilty pleasure
By Marisa James
John Jakes has become my favorite guilty pleasure. His books read fast and have plenty of action and melodrama (kind of like he wrote them with a miniseries in mind...hmm...). They're just trashy enough that you feel like you're having fun, and just historical enough that you feel like you're learning something. I loved the North and South miniseries, and I loved the Crown family books. I wasn't sure I would be as intrigued by the revolutionary period, but I'm falling in love with the characters - I had to run out to the bookstore and get "The Seekers" right after I finished "The Rebels!"

The only non-5 star book of the 8-book series.
By Bruce Amspacher
This is an interesting and compelling read, and a necessary part of the Kent family chronicles. It's kind of a bummer, though, as absolutely nothing good happens to anyone for over 500 pages. I guess you could call it brilliant but depressing, if that makes sense.

Gobernanza , Instituciones y Desarrollo (Spanish Edition), by Agusti Cerrillo i Martínez

A Barcelona Heiress, by Sergio Vila-Sanjuán

A historical detective story set against the social and political tumult of 1920s Barcelona and based on the real events of the end of a dazzling era.

In the decade before the Spanish Civil War, Barcelona is on the verge of boiling over. Pablo Vilar, a well-connected young lawyer and journalist, meets several mysterious people who seem to hold clues to what is brewing in the city. The diverse cast of characters includes an assaulted cabaret artist, an anarchist leader, the city’s new autocratic civil governor, and a beautiful, wealthy countess—their destinies all bound by invisible ties. While the city both touches its zenith and peers into the abyss, Vilar guides us through a labyrinth that leads from the caverns of Montjuïc, home to paupers and outlaws, to the high-society parties in the gardens of Horta.

Based on documents from the author’s family archives, and called “an irresistible read” by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, author of The Shadow of the Wind, A Barcelona Heiress provides a fresh perspective on a complex and dramatic period.

Spanish Reform and Revolution of the 1920s!
By Viviane Crystal
Barcelona, Spain is on the verge of Civil War in the 1920s. The story of this multi-layered conflict is narrated by lawyer and journalist, Pablo Vilar. He's a man who in the name of both careers attempts neutrality in the conflicts but also a man who is constantly being swayed by partisan characters who want him to write articles favoring or defending one side against the other side. While he is not influenced that much, what he sees and hears is worthy of our attention, for it is the "stuff" of which revolutions have been made for centuries.

The eternal conflict between rich and poor is factually proven when Vilar is taken to the "caves" where the poor live and subsist on almost nothing or the private hospitals financially supported by those with a heart where starving, disease-ridden children are treated with the meager supplies of medicine and vitamins, food, etc. There are the union groups who are willing to incite and practice violence to obtain their demands.

All of this is exemplified in the mystery which is the center of the story. It involves an anarchist who assassinates those who have committed crimes but been declared innocent by the courts. There's the heiress of the novel's title whom Vilar would wed but who continues to exert influence on both royalty, nobles, anarchists, union groups and the poor. She is a "woman for all people" and yet one wonders what principles center her real beliefs. And what about the cabaret singer who is brutally attacked and whose connections are less than innocent or neutral.

One gets a fine sense of the culture of Barcelona and the governmental structure behind the story, involving royalty as well as city, military and provincial authorities. What Vilar hears in true political style is not what necessarily is! All is encountered during the most audacious and extravagant social parties and events. It is hard at times to follow the story because of all the name-dropping that no one could possible remember unless a master of Spanish history.

All in all, A Barcelona Heiress is a fascinating, well-researched work of historical fiction that is packed full of action, mystery, humor, poignancy, and so much more. Money rules the world - and it can also reform and transform the same! Impressive novel!

Great underlying story...poor character development
By Naomi B.
Synopsis: In 1920's Spain, which is on the cusp of Civil War, the living differences between the rich and the poor are glaring and those with their own agendas are manipulating the system. Simmering beneath the surface is someone murdering individuals whom have been found innocent of their crimes by the courts.

Narrated from the perspective of Pablo Vilar, an attorney and journalist, who is always being manipulated from the interest groups wanting their own stories told, and loves an heiress, who seems to be able to mix with all these groups flawlessly. Is the heiress all she seems to be or is there something much deeper under the surface.

My rating: 2.5 Stars

My opinion: Although the premise of the story was interesting to me and the description of the setting was superb, I couldn't connect to any of the characters and found them to be written very one dimensionally. As a result, this book simply fell flat to me. I wish the author would have put as much effort into character development as he did into developing and describing his setting. I think had he done that, this would have been a 4 star read for me.

Do you really think justice has been done?_________ 3 1/2 stars
By eyes.2c
Barcelona in the 1920's at a time of civil unrest and anarchy. Social injustices and civil unrest combine as the striking background to this novel of murder, intrigue and anarchy. Spain is unraveling!
Justice is for the rich and powerful. The story opens with a client (a young showgirl) reporting an attempted robbery by three men to our storyteller, lawyer-journalist Pablo Vilar.
The ingredients are all here for an excellent novel. The background descriptions to the Spanish civil war are compelling. The story that develops against this rich portrayal of the times is somewhat hampered by the labored conversational style of Pablo Vilar as he narrates events. As a consequence the interaction between characters is somewhat stilted. It could be that the flow has been lost in translation, which is a pity; or maybe I should read the work as a traveler searching for meanings in a different cultural and historical framework. Either way this is an otherwise interesting view into the times.
I enjoyed the historical aura. I have not been to Barcelona but when I do, I will reread `A Barcelona Heiress' for a sense of place and history.

My Mother's Wars, by Lillian Faderman

An acclaimed writer on her mother’s tumultuous life as a Jewish immigrant in 1930s New York and her life-long guilt when the Holocaust claims the family she left behind in Latvia

A story of love, war, and life as a Jewish immigrant in the squalid factories and lively dance halls of New York’s Garment District in the 1930s, My Mother’s Wars is the memoir Lillian Faderman’s mother was never able to write. The daughter delves into her mother’s past to tell the story of a Latvian girl who left her village for America with dreams of a life on the stage and encountered the realities of her new world: the battles she was forced to fight as a woman, an immigrant worker, and a Jew with family left behind in Hitler’s deadly path.

The story begins in 1914: Mary, the girl who will become Lillian Faderman’s mother, just seventeen and swept up with vague ambitions to be a dancer, travels alone to America, where her half-sister in Brooklyn takes her in. She finds a job in the garment industry and a shop friend who teaches her the thrills of dance halls and the cheap amusements open to working-class girls. This dazzling life leaves Mary distracted and her half-sister and brother-in-law scandalized that she has become a “good-time gal.” They kick her out of their home, an event with consequences Mary will regret for the rest of her life.

Eighteen years later, still barely scraping by as a garment worker and unmarried at thirty-five, Mary falls madly in love and has a torrid romance with a man who will never marry her, but who will father Lillian Faderman before he disappears from their lives. America is in the midst of the Depression, Hitler is coming to power in Europe, and New York’s garment workers are just beginning to unionize. Mary makes tentative steps to join, despite her lover’s angry opposition. As National Socialism engulfs Europe, Mary realizes she must find a way to get her family out of Latvia, and she spends frenetic months chasing vague promises and false rumors of hope. Pregnant again, after having submitted to two wrenching back-room abortions, and still unmarried, Mary faces both single motherhood and the devastating possibility of losing her entire Eastern European family.

Drawing on family stories and documents, as well as her own tireless research, Lillian Faderman has reconstructed an engrossing and essential chapter in the history of women, of workers, of Jews, and of the Holocaust as immigrants experienced it from American shores.

From Booklist
Drawing on the stories told to her when she was a girl, Faderman recontructs her mother’s life, devotions, and tragedies in early 1930s America in a memoiristic tale. At 17, Mary Lifton leaves her shtetl in Latvia for New York City, where she takes up residence with her half sister. It’s a short-lived arrangement, and Mary supports herself by working on and off in the garment industry. Eighteen years later, Mary, now 35 and never married, by chance meets the younger, charismatic Moishe, Faderman’s father. The two embark on a passionate, tumultuous affair that lasts for years as Mary participates in a labor-union uprising and has a romance with another man, and, while barely making ends meet, two unplanned pregnancies. An affecting undercurrent is Mary’s unending loyalty to her family left behind in Latvia. When the Nazi movement begins to gain ground in Eastern Europe, Mary’s affections for Moishe are outweighed by her harrowing desperation to save her family. As Faderman vividly chronicles her mother’s intense personality and complex experiences, she also freshly illuminates the Jewish immigrant experience. --Leah Strauss

Review
"This is an exquisite piece of history—both resonantly personal and full of revelatory moments in  the history of  women, and of  New York in the early days of  the garment workers union and the shadow of the Holocaust.  The sympathy and understanding Faderman shows for her immigrant mother, and her whole family, reminded me again of what I love about memoir. This is not just a story; these are lives on the page."  —Dorothy Allison

“Faderman’s story of her immigrant mother is so vividly imagined that you can taste the borscht Mary eats, squirm at the claustrophobia of her tiny rented room, and be swept up in the sensual delight that will betray her.”  —Janice Steinberg, author of The Tin Horse

“This book is a work of originality, written with such imaginative sympathy that I read it with unabating pleasure from beginning to end.” —Vivian Gornick, author of Fierce Attachments

“Lillian Faderman is an extraordinary storyteller, one of the few who can tell a painful story with a complex ending—and imbue it with humor, sensuality, and earthy grace, in every sentence.” —Amy Bloom, author of Away

“The sympathy and understanding Faderman shows for her immigrant mother and her whole family reminded me again of what I love about memoir. This is not just a story; these are lives on the page.” —Dorothy Allison, author of Bastard Out of Carolina

“My Mother’s Wars tells the aching story of immigrant factory workers in the decades preceding World War II—sad lives made sadder by the terrifying knowledge that their families in Europe are being extinguished. The book is part memoir, part reconstruction . . . and all artistry.” —Edith Pearlman, author of Binocular Vision

“Faderman is a skilled storyteller and a careful documentarian . . . the historical details in the book have been provided by extensive research. It is these historical details and Faderman’s lyrical storytelling skill that make this book such an inviting read.” —Carol Poll, Jewish Book Council

“A remarkable work of reconstruction . . . As usual, Faderman’s seemingly effortless prose is the result of years of patient research. As far as possible, she has made sure that the past will be accurately remembered.”  —The Gay & Lesbian Review

“To be sure, the Holocaust figures crucially in [Lillian Faderman’s] new memoir . . . but her book is more than a testimony of the Holocaust— it is a love story, a family memoir and, above all, an American tale.”  —Jonathan Kirsch, The Jewish Journal

“[A] strikingly intelligent and emotionally wrenching narrative.”  —Philip Jason, The Washington Independent Review of Books

“A gripping personal testimony. Author Lillian Faderman shares her mother's story of immigrating to America with high hopes of dancing, only to be swept up in the undercurrents of New York, and the struggles of being a worker in the garment industry. . . . A must for history and memoir collections focusing on personal tales.” —Midwest Book Review

“Faderman expertly explores a jarring view into the immigrant life of Jewish Holocaust survivors living in the US.”  —Nick Pachelli, The Advocate

“As Faderman vividly chronicles her mother’s intense personality and complex experiences, she also freshly illuminates the Jewish immigrant experience.”  —Booklist

“Faderman commands her material in this page-turner—no small feat with a subject so close to home.” —Make/shift

Gripping, heartbreaking, and so well written
By A reader
This is one of the most powerful books I have read in a long time. Lillian Fadermann tells the fascinating story of her mother's life in two intertwined stories: first, the story of her very long, painful love affair, and second, her grappling with the depression, the events leading up to World War II, and the horrifying threat of the Holocaust, particularly to her extended family back in Latvia. The author weighs in here and there about her mother's less fortunate decisions ("oh, Mama, Mama...") with such beauty and tenderness. I was glued to this book, and it lingers in my mind, days later.

I was so impressed with the author's ability to be intimate and warm, to recount horrifying events with such simplicity and clarity, and to build suspense that draws us in like a magnet, even we all know what the devastating outcomes are going to be. She begins each chapter with a few historical facts that tell much about the times, the attitudes of people, and events to come. The book teaches so much about life in the sweatshops, worldwide anti-Semitism, the desperate situation of the Jews, the attitudes toward single women, and so many hideous world situations beyond anyone's control. I had to close the book several times to catch my breath, wipe away tears, and just take in the enormity of it all.

In every way, the book is remarkably effective, profoundly disturbing, and very much worth reading. Most highly recommended to anyone interested in history, the crazy paradoxes of human nature, and outstanding storytelling, and to anyone who was ever a struggling young girl (or boy) foolishly in love for the first time.

"May you live in interesting times"
By kiki
There is an old saying "May you live in interesting times". This can be understood as a blessing or a curse. Lillian Faderman's mother lived both meanings of it.

Escaping from the poverty of a Latvian shtetl in 1914, she finds herself working long hours, six days a week, doing piecework in a garment factory in New York. Mareleh Luft struggles to learn English and changes her name to Mary Lifton to "Americanize" herself. When she left Latvia at 17, she promised her younger brother she would send for him, but saving enough money for his passage to New York is difficult.

Mary participates in organizing strikes of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. This also makes her aware of the political situation worldwide. She sees the rise of the Nazi party and becomes frantic to get her family out of Latvia.

I absolutely couldn't put this book down. Ms.Faderman has honored her extended family by preserving their fascinating lives in this book. I got so invested in all of the people in this book, except for Morris, the user, of course. I highly recommend "My Mother's Wars" by Lillian Faderman.

I received a copy of this book from Beacon Press through Goodreads.

As a former New Yorker
By BookAce
whose family lived in New York City since the 1920's, and as one who lived in the Bronx in the 40's and 50's and knew quite well, some of the folks who had been in concentration camps, this book spoke to my heart, my memory and my emotions. I understood also, the ghettos, the tenements - sometimes-miserable living quarters thereof, and the thronging grimy streets whose glittering counterparts were the night life of a living breathing city of immigrants, many of them trying to save a buck to bring a beloved family member across the ocean.

Who knew, back then before all mayhem and murder broke loose, what Hitler (or Mussolini) would be capable of doing? Mary (Mereleh) Lifton did not, until it was too late. My own grandparents in their complacency perhaps, stayed on in Italy until it was almost too late -- they lost all their money and their home, fleeing Mussolini with their children in 1931. Italy was not spared. Poland, Russia, England were not spared. And even Latvia was not spared. But who could see all this coming? Some did, a very few, it seems, until it was too late to do anything to save lives.

And who knew what life-saving feats one "ugly" man would be capable of doing for the woman he dearly loved, but who did not love him back? - Could Dominick have helped Mary realize this dream, this farewell-to-my-family promise of hers? We will never know. I remember my mother telling me about "arranged" marriages where "ugly" men turned out to be loving caring providers for their families, although the women they married did not love them back. How sad. It seemed that Stella was the lucky one here, although Mary could never understand why she would marry such an uncomely man who was actually an angel in disguise ("go out with your friend -- I'll take the kids to the zoo").

Mary Lifton comes to the shores of NY in the early 1900's as a young woman, with dreams of becoming a dancer on the Yiddish stage. Staying with relatives, half-sister Sarah and brother-in-law Sam, she realizes only the drab tiring actuality of being a six-day-a-week piece worker in a Brooklyn garment factory. Her wages are miserable, her life dictated by the man of the house, and her dreams - well her dreams, no longer that of becoming a dancer, are sometimes of her little brother Hirschel, her beloved brother, who appears to her in anguished dreams. Is this a foretaste of the future?

Mary never becomes a dancer -- the only dancing she does at first is in the company of Goldie -- dear Goldie -- a brash gum-snapping garment worker who wants the best in life, can do it on a shoestring budget, and takes Mary with her for a whirlwind ride through the night life of the gas-lit streets (the same ones as portrayed by such artists as John Sloan and the Ashcan School) of New York City. Goldie -- Dear Goldie -- I mourned you. My Nonna Lucia almost met the same fate -- I would not be here if that had happened to her. Mary almost met the same fate -- and in doing so was propelled into a harder-scrabble existence than the one she had before.

But Mary meets a man -- she is entranced by this man Moishe, who is half gangster and half lover. Her life is swept away because of him -- everything she does is for him -- she loses sight of anything else, and perhaps because of that her family on the other side of the ocean suffer?? No one is sent for - Mary does not have the money. Dominick did but she does not love Dominick. And Moishe? Well, Moishe is not what he seems. Mary does not see that.

There is an angel here -- in the form of Ray -- Mary's sister who DID come over to the US - Ray is a tough no nonsense woman with "flat-footed sanity" that Mary can lean on, a shoulder to cry on, a voice of reason that Mary does not always listen to -- perhaps Ray is a woman-oriented-woman, as she spends her time with her female friends and cuts her own swath through life, without needing a man to buoy her or her emotions up. There is another angel--Ricki- a friend and neighbor, who is there when Mary is at a very low place in her life

Meanwhile the trauma and terror overseas continues to escalate - Mary's dreams of Hirschel are more terrifying than ever. Where is Moishe? What happens to Dominick? What sadness is contained in the letters Mary receives! Letters, not only from Hirschel, but her mother, "di mameh" -- but from the White House.

Was Mary guilty of what happened to her loved ones ? Could she have acted earlier? Knowing what we do now of that part of history, it is very hard to know, and impossible to judge. Mary and Ray do their utmost best to deliver their loved ones from the killing machines overseas, only to meet with great frustration in every agency they rush to - every government agent they plead with - there is this `quota" and because of it, loved ones overseas will die....horribly.

Lillian Faderman brings such life to her words. How can one not feel the pain, the grime, the bone-wracking exhaustion, the fear, the hopes, the anguish that attend not only Mary, but those living in that era, working their fingers to the bone, and coming home to a small dingy apartment with a murphy bed and a sometimes- surly landlord/lady. But there are joys there as well--the days at Coney Island, the night life, friends who care deeply, and... "butterfly wings" a beautiful way of announcing Lillian's entrance into this world.

"My Mother's Wars" also deals not only with back-alley abortions, but with the almost-unheard of acceptance of an unwed woman's pregnancy - gifts and good wishes pour in from the very ones that Mary fears will turn against her. There is beauty in this grimy sometimes-tragic world after all.

"My Mother's Wars" helped me in some way deal with my own mother's wars - Sis and I were the only ones she confided in -- her personal problems and deeply expressed emotions were a very heavy burden for two little girls, especially as toddlers. We had our Nonna Lucia to lean on and be nurtured and loved by -- Lillian had her beloved Ray.

"My Mother's Wars" is a book that as it is read, is deeply felt - lives are played out in front of the reader, lives lost in many different ways, as is love lost, love yearning, love dying. I hope Mary found peace. I grieve for Dominick--I can only hope he found someone who truly loved him back. I applaud Lillian and Ray for being the strong women who held a burden of their family on their backs and walked through it all with love in their hearts and their shoulders unbent.

BTW -- I love the cover design -- a graceful woman whirls and dances - happiness, music, joyful abandon are evoked in this photo -- yet it mirrors the whirlwind that will soon descend on Eastern Europe as well as the whirlwind of thoughts and fears that Mary and Ray will soon traverse as they desperately try to rescue their loved ones from the vortex of evil.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight, by Rian Malan

Since its original publication twenty years ago Rian Malan’s classic work of narrative nonfiction My Traitor’s Heart has earned its author comparisons to masters of literary nonfiction like Michael Herr and Ryszard Kapuscinski.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight is Malan’s remarkable chronicle of South Africa’s halting steps and missteps, taken as blacks and whites try to build a new country. Some of the essays previously appeared in a collection published only in South Africa, Resident Alien, but others are collected here for the first time. The collection comprises twenty-three pieces; the title story investigates the provenance of the world famous song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” which Malan traces back to a Zulu singer named Solomon Linda who recorded a song called “Mbube” in the 1930s, which went on to be covered by Pete Seeger, REM, and Phish, and was incorporated into the musical “The Lion King.” In other stories, Malan follows the trial of Winnie Mandela and plunges into the explosive controversy over President Mbeki’s AIDS policies of the 1990s.

The stories, combined with Malan’s sardonic interstitial commentary, offer a brilliantly observed portrait of contemporary South Africa.

From Bookforum
Malan supplies a sharply personal account of apartheid's final days—and the emergence of a postapartheid order. He seems to make it his business... to try to dismantle his own preconceptions about South Africa and its potential, while also debating those who harbor views of the black-led South Africa that he deems overly romantic. He admits he was wrong, but then sets out to prove that everyone else was, too. As a result, Malan's testimony from the witnes-box is chiefly a summary of his attempts to truly see the new South Africa. —Victor Lavalle

Review
Malan is South Africa's Christopher Hitchens, similarly touched with genius. -- Justin Cartwright Daily Telegraph Cynical, lively and above all, opinionated... Malan's writing remains relevant and provides a fascinating glimpse of post-apartheid South Africa. The Sunday Times travel section Hugely alive. Malan's writing is animated by anger and a savage irony, yet it is always controlled, clear and readable. Sunday Herald Bracing, cheeky, and a damn good read. Spectator The Lion Sleeps Tonight is an arresting collection. South Africa should treasure Malan, but it won't. One suspects he wouldn't have it any other way. The Sunday Times

South Africa, the sacred and the profane.
By SInohey
This book is a repackaged and updated version of Malan's second book "Resident Alien" published in South Africa (by Jonathan Ball) in 2009. It contains only two new chapters that were not included in the previous tome. This does not detract from its impact but serves to remind the reader of the continued turbulence within South Africa's mixed society, which is struggling to build its future by accommodating its present with its sordid past. The physical and psychological wounds of culturally-approved and state-sanctioned system of apartheid are exposed through the lives of black and white citizens. Malan writes "if they (blacks) did something wrong, you had to beat them. They (the Boers) were very hard on the natives".
Malan is the boy who points out that "the emperor has no clothes". He does not absolve the ruling Europeans (Boer) of their guilt but he also acknowledges that blacks responded with violence towards their oppressors and to each other.

In "Invictus", the chapter about South Africa's win of the World Cup in Rugby the author points out the unifying influence of Mandela as president of all South Africans and his image as a peaceful conciliator. But Malan also shows the rancorous vengeful Mandela intent on punishing members of the previous government, police and military only to be curtailed by his legally binding agreement with de Klerk.

Most of the 21 articles in the book had been previously published in Esquire, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and The Spectator among others. Readers of Malan's previous best-seller "My Traitor's Heart" (2000) will recognize his well-researched, meticulously reported, uncompromising style of communicating. He often puts himself in the middle of the action. As a crime reporter, Malan constructs his pieces like detective stories whether he is telling the tale of the "Last Afrikaner" (Katrien & Shabana Lulu) in Tanzania or seeking monetary recompense for Solomon Linda, the unheralded and uncompensated author of "Mbube" (lion in Zulu), the melody upon which the internationally recognized song of the same title of this book was based upon.
Arguably, Malan's major contribution is his investigation (on assignment by Rolling Stone) of the AIDS crisis in South Africa, during Mbeki's presidency, where he goes against the grain and is vilified. "Unfortunately, the facts as I found them failed to justify Mbeki's decapitation, so I veered off on a tangent that fell way outside Rolling Stone's brief, with consequences that will dog me to my grave."

Malan's candor, his fearless toppling of idols off their pedestals and his demystification of dogma are reminiscent of Bongani Madondo ("Hot Type") and Darry Bristow-Bovey ("I moved your Cheeze") , two of South Africa's up-and-coming writers of consequence.

With this treatise, Rian Malan has established his place as a rising star in international literature.

He said" there is no such thing as a true story in South Africa. The facts may be correct, all details double-checked but the truth they reveal will always be challenged by someone else".

Contemporary South Africa
By JAK
This is a first rate collection of short pieces on South Africa. The knockout piece is entitled IN THE JUNGLE and it's fascinating. It's a story about the history of the song THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT.On the surface, not very promising sounding .Malan turns this into a compelling tale of greed, copyright law and the music industry in South Africa and the US.There is even a guest appearance by Pete Seeger .If you don't read another piece in this book , read this.On another note, I was also intrigued by by Report FROM PLANET MBEKI, because it reminded me of something I'd largely forgotten. In the 80's and 90's , there was a big - right- left debate about what would happen to South Africa once the ANC took over. The right predicted dire consequences because of the extent of Communist penetration of the ANC .The left was dismissive of this.It didn't believe the Communists were dominant in the ANC and predicted everything would be just fine.Strangely enough both were right and wrong. The ANC was even more Communist penetrated than the right wingers imagined .Yet, once it attained power the ANC made no attempt to move towards Communism.I think South Africa was very lucky.Apartheid collapsed right after the iron curtain fell and the Chinese economic reforms had begun. The ANC leadership , very much including the often reviled Mbeki, apparently realized Communism's day was done and instead focused on self enrichment and extending benefits and hope to the African masses in the context of a market economy.Grudgingly , Malan does give them credit for that and concedes Mbeki, who became infamous for his AIDS denial, was a key player in this, even though he'd been a Communist Party member for years.

Malan is a pleasure to read.Smart, funny, cynical and a first rate stylist. He has a BS detector that never shuts off.He will not let you down.

Reissue of "Resident Alien" with fewer stories and higher price
By JD
The title about sums it up. I was excited about a new Rian Malan book, but when I compared the table of contents to "Resident Alien" (which I own), I was disappointed. Based on the titles, there are only 2 stories in this book that aren't in "Resident Alien", while the latter has 9 that aren't in this book. Won't be buying it.

The End of a Story
By K. Morgan
Heaven and Hell, the last book in the North and South trilogy was absolutely wonderful. This book is mainly about Charles and his life in the West. And also his trying to find a place in the world after the war. Madeline is also a major character in this book with her journal entries to Orry. And the evil Bent has to make his appearance throughout. (I could have done without Bent!!) The lives of Stanley, Virgilia, Billie, Brett, and the love-to-hate-her Aston aren't covered as much in this book. I would have loved to learn more about Billie and Brett. Also would have liked to read more about Marie-Louise and her Yankee husband Theo. I found the parts of the book about them to be very touching.
If you've already read the other two books you must read this one to find out what happens. You will be in for quite a few surprises. This book is definitely worth reading. A classic!!!

Pretty good
By A Customer
I can't believe this series is out of print! When I was in high school, I encountered these in my mom's book collection, and thought the whole series was just great. "Heaven and Hell" is definitely the weakest of the three, but it's still pretty good. A few points stand out...
Wished that Cooper's character could have mellowed a bit, his transformation from "North and South" to this book seemed fairly unbelievable. Maybe that was the point though, that sometimes people react very differently than you might expect.
Since I always liked Billy and Brett, I wished I had known more about their life in CA.
And finally, the last time we see Ashton (wishing she was a little girl again), it is the first time we ever saw her acting like a human. After you read that line, any re-reading of the series will be tempered by the knowledge of her last scene.
A good read!

I am constantly re-delighted with this series.
By A Customer
I have read all three books in this series and re-read it many times. It is one of the most fair of any portraits of the old south. More believable than romaticized. In fact, I have all 3 books as well as the first two installments of the mini-series. Unfortunately, Due to a really severe snow storm in 1993 I was unable to get the final third installment, "Heaven & Hell" taped. Video clubs or ABC or any other affiliates swear it never aired. So, if any of you fans have it please e-mail me & we'll get something done. I was suprised this is out of print as well. It should be required reading for all history classes.
