Shannon Huffman Polson has written a soulful and brave book about death, life, and the complexities surrounding both. There is nothing sentimental in these pages. This is a testament to deep change, human and wild. -- Terry Tempest Williams, , author, When Women Were Birds

Daring, perceptive, and eloquent---Polson’s writing is clear and forceful. Like all true pilgrimages, this one is challenging, and well worth taking. -- Scott Russell Sanders, , author, Earth Works and A Conservationist Manifesto

Polson’s extraordinary journey draws you into the depths of anguish and brings you back out realizing that while not all things fractured can be healed, the soul will gravitate toward beauty, art, and meaning if guided in the right direction. -- Alison Levine, , mountaineer, polar explorer, and team captain of the first American Women’s Everest Expedition

North of Hope is an enthralling story of loss, courage, and redemption told by a gifted, original, and brave new voice, Shannon Huffman Polson. -- Robert Clark, , award-winning author of ten books, including Dark Water and Mr. White’s Confession

As Shannon Polson poignantly recounts the loss of family members to a grizzly attack in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, framing her memoir around her own trek into the wilderness where they perished, she comes to believe that there is grace and wonder in the most unlikely places, that the landscape’s wildness can teach you about letting go of control, and that Easter doesn’t arrive until you’ve experienced Good Friday. Anyone who has endured the grief of losing someone or something they loved will identify with the advice Polson was given: “When tragedy comes into your life, the most beautiful thing you can do is keep moving forward.” -- Cindy Crosby, , former National Park Ranger and author of By Willoway Brook (www.cindycrosby.com)

Shannon Polson brilliantly tells the story of venturing into the Alaskan wilderness to find the place where her parents were killed. Interwoven with that journey is the story of how she auditioned for and sang the Mozart Requiem. This is no ordinary memoir. To read it is to be changed. -- Jeanne Walker, , author, New Tracks, Night Falling

Shannon Huffman Polson has written a book about loss that is both unique to her personal experience and universal to the human experience. She writes with clarity, honesty, and poise. North of Hope, Shannon Polson’s gripping account of the shattering, traumatic loss of her father, is a must read. In the end, Shannon is faced with a choice---does she choose the beauty and majesty of life or succumb to the pain and trauma of the loss of her beloved father? Lyric beauty about life and death
By Arthur Digbee
While they were rafting down a remote river in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Polson's father and stepmother were killed by a barren-ground grizzly bear. This book is Polson's attempt to make sense of the events and deal with the grief - as well as reflect on her parents' lives, and her own. It's structured around her own trip down the same river, including a visit to the fatal campsite.

She weaves several different themes together. Some parts are her own memoirs; others reflect on Dad's and Kathy's lives, individually and jointly. (Polson's mother, who divorced Dad about twenty years previously, is nearly absent from the book.) Polson explores what we find important about wilderness, though the book is more about people than about nature. After a breakup with a long-term boyfriend with whom she remains friendly, Polson rafts down the Hulahula with an estranged brother and his girlfriend.

In addition to the raft trip, the second major theme meditates on sections of Mozart's Requiem Mass in D (Kyria, Tuba Mirum, Offertorium, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Lacrymosa). Polson is part of the choir that will be performing this Mass under the direction of Izaak Perlman, providing some opportunities for religious reflection in the first year after Dad and Kathy's deaths. Despite this recurring note, this is the least religious book that I have ever seen from Zondervan (a religious press). Polson's faith is real, but only one part of her life, and just one theme in this book.

Polson writes beautifully and honestly. This book will appeal to those dealing with grief, those who love Alaska and wilderness more generally, some religious readers, and people who love well-written memoirs.

A powerful, poetic exploration of grief though sacred pilgrimage
By Niki Collins-queen, Author
Shannon Polson's powerful, eloquent memoir "North of Hope: A Daughter's Arctic Journey" is the deeply moving story about her search for meaning in the face of her parent's tragic, untimely death. Rich, her father and Kathy, her step-mother were killed in a rare grizzly attack while rafting the Hulahula River in Alaska's remote Arctic Wilderness in 2005.
Forced in the wilderness of grief Shannon leaves her home in Seattle to retrace Rich and Kathy's final days in a raft along the Arctic River with Ned her adopted brother and his work colleague Sally.
Shannon describes the three of them as a motley crew. Especially since she was going on a personally significant journey with Ned a person she had never been close to and Sally someone she didn't know.
Her poetic writing weaves together her painful internal landscape of grief with the exquisite yet harsh exterior landscape of the Arctic. Like her father, Shannon's deep appreciation for the untamed and remote wilderness of the Alaskan Arctic moves her story effortlessly between adventure, natural history, sacred pilgrimage, music, nature and faith.

A well crafted narrative you should discover for yourself, North of Hope is well worth reading!
By Noelle the Dreamer
North of Hope can only be described as a well crafted narrative you should discover for yourself, particularly if you have ever experienced a deep loss! No amount of lyrical prose on the part of this reviewer could provide you with an inkling of the account of one daughter's journey into the Alaskan wilderness. Retracing her father's last trek across the Artic a year later is Shannon's hope to make sense of the tragic event which took his and her stepmum's lives.

Woven throughout the grief and despair of having lost a father, a friend and confident are skillful descriptions of barren lands, incomparable Artic wildlife and flashbacks to earlier and happier times interspersed with tales of the bear's place in Native folklore around the globe.

Together with adopted brother Ned and friend Sally, Shannon starts her quest in Kaktovik, at the northern edge of Alaska, their goal to raft the Hulahula river following directives found in her father's diary.
Arranging for their rafting supplies and a bush pilot to fly them to Grassers strip, their starting point, is however the easy part. The weather does not cooperate and requires of the trio an overnight stay in town, the writer's description of the only available accommodation an interesting highlight!

North of Hope is a labour of love, a search for continuation, a testament that you can go on despite the grief or perhaps because of it. It is also a story of deep faith shared by someone who finds herself on the edge of uncharted land, her larger than life father gone forever. To understand Shannon, her undeniable love of music and adventures, you should first read her biography.

In the end, like a beautiful but unfinished symphony, Shannon's 'thoughts about going to the Artic are not merely an interest but a necessity, to see the place where they died and the river which became their Requiem'...
She needed to finish their trip.

Note: I delayed posting this review as I shared this story with my family. By now a well thumbed book, we are in total agreement: North of Hope is worth much more than 5 stars!

Bartolome de las Casas, by Lawrence A. Clayton

The Dominican priest Bartolomé de las Casas (1485–1566) was a prominent chronicler of the early Spanish conquest of the Americas, a noted protector of the American Indians and arguably the most significant figure in the early Spanish Empire after Christopher Columbus. Following an epiphany in 1514, Las Casas fought the Spanish control of the Indies for the rest of his life, writing vividly about the brutality of the Spanish conquistadors. Once a settler and exploiter of the American Indians, he became their defender, breaking ground for the modern human rights movement. Las Casas brought his understanding of Christian scripture to the forefront in his defense of the Indians, challenging the premise that the Indians of the New World were any less civilized or capable of practising Christianity than Europeans. Bartolomé de las Casas: A Biography is the first major English-language and scholarly biography of Las Casas' life in a generation.

Review
"... magisterial ... Clayton offers an appreciative, and balanced portrait."
Thomas W. Jodziewics, Catholic Southwest

From the Back Cover
After Christopher Columbus, Bartolome de las Casas is the single most important figure in the period known as the Encounter, a time of intensive conflict between Europeans and the people of the Americas following Columbus's voyages. In this book, Clayton provides a short history of the age of exploration and the conquest of the Americas told through the experience and acts of Las Casas.
Las Casas, a Dominican friar, witnessed the brutality of the Spanish explorers early in the conquest. Motivated above all by Christian scripture, he turned on the conquistadors with a passion that made him the most prominent defender and protector of the native peoples of the Americas. He led a lifelong crusade to secure justice for Amerindians within a Christian framework of justice and equality. Through Las Casas's story, Clayton explores the major events and conflicts of the period, including the relationship between colonizers and colonized and the burgeoning trade in African slaves.
The book allows readers to enter the world of the Encounter through the eyes of an individual who not only lived through the period, but was crucial in forming it. In doing so, it provides a foundation for understanding the early days of Spanish exploration, settlement, and conquest, a period which set the stage for the creation of the modern civilization of the Americas.

About the Author
Lawrence A. Clayton is Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of History at the University of Alabama. He is currently writing the first major biography of Las Casas in more than a generation.

Las Casas gets his much-needed English-language biography
By Arthur Digbee
Bartolomé de las Casas was a Dominican priest from Seville, Spain, who briefly sought his fortune in the New World, only a decade after Columbus' first voyage. Though he had Indian slaves in the encomendero system, he soon freed them after a conversion experience. After that, he became a persistent and vocal critic of Spanish policy in the New World. He was given the title, "Protector of the Indians," and had a role in Spanish policy. The Emperor Charles gave Las Casas a hearing throughout his reign, before retiring to a monastery to care for his soul. His son Philip gradually tired of Las Casas, a voice in the wilderness who narrowly escaped the Spanish Inquisition toward the end of his life.

Though Las Casas is a familiar figure in the Spanish-speaking world, he is less well-known in Anglophone North America. Clayton provides an excellent introduction to the man and his causes. After his early life, we follow Las Casas to Cuba, where we see the pointless massacres and intolerable injustices that sparked his conversion. Clayton tells us of Las Casas's various projects to improve the lot of the Indians and to focus Spanish activities on conversion, not conquest. To my mind, those projects were marked by their naivete as well as their good intentions.

The last third of the book shifts the focus from events to debates. Las Casas pretty much stays put in Spain, so we no longer follow his travels. Instead, Clayton brings us into the political battles Las Casas fought, often unsuccessfully, on behalf of Indians. Unlike most academic biographies, Clayton does not merely summarize the debates but engages them. He brings us into the heart of the debates over Indian sovereignty, just war, and human rights. He takes a strong but implicit Christian position that consistently supports what Las Casas tried to do. At the same time, he regularly questions Las Casas's tactics, and is critical of several of his plans.

It's unusual to see an academic historian, writing for the most prestigious university press in the world, speak openly of his own faith in a biography. He regularly quotes scripture, in both academic and faith contexts. This point of view is not obtrusive but does make his own point of view clear. It makes Clayton engage with Las Casas's moral dilemmas in a way that a secular historian would not. That engagement brings the debates over Native sovereignty and human rights forward to our own lives, elevating the book just enough to earn that fifth star in my book.

Interesting subject but poorly written
By DG
I am a human rights lawyer and was thrilled to see published a new biography of las Casas, who was arguably the founder of human rights law. Unfortunately, however, this book is so poorly written it is almost unreadable. Did an editor ever review this book? Within the first 50 pages alone, there are numerous sentences repeated wholesale. For example, on page 23, the author writes that the fleet sailed "from Sanlucar de Barrameda (the roadstead where the Guadalquivir River joins the Atlantic Ocean) on February 13, 1502 with a fleet of thirty-two ships and 2,500 men." Two paragraphs later, on the same page, he again writes "The fleet - thirty-two vessels large and small - assembled in Seville and dropped down the Guadalquivir River early in February to rendezvous at Sanlucar de Barrameda at the mouth of the river. Twenty-five hundred men . . . made up the expedition". On page 46, the author writes "Other [women], pregnant, took herbs to abort and cut short their pregnancies." Five paragraphs later, on page 47, the author repeats, "Pregant women, rather than bring their babies into this inferno, aborted, using herbs." Errors like these ocur so frequently, it is truly distracting and frustrating. The author also has a habit of switching between direct quotes from contemporaneous accounts and his own fictional dialogue, and it is often unclear whether quoted text is genuine, or invented. I consider this a serious shortcoming in a book that purports to be an academic work. I am not a scholar of this period, but it is hard to trust the quality of the research when the quality of the writing and citation is so poor.

Intriguing Insight into the Life of Las Casas
By Bror Erickson
Before reading this book I had not even heard of Bartolome' de las Casas, and I am ashamed of that. It is problematic because in North America the history of Latin America is not given due attention. And for that reason our understanding of our own history is necessarily deficient. Las Casas and his fight to protect the American Indians, his conflict with the Spanish government, his interpretations of Canon Law and application to secular law etc. influenced all subsequent settlements of America greatly. His fight for human rights was phenomenal and has had great influence on Political thought since then.
Lawrence Clayton has done us a great service by making this insightful biography available to the general public, and those involved in human rights (read all of us) are impoverished for not reading this book. I think it is especially valuable for those in Clayton's home state of Alabama where he is a professor at The University of Alabama, a state right trying to pass immigration laws that would test las Casas patience for their treatment of fellow humans.
The book, for being written by a professor of history in a secular institution and by published by a secular publisher, is refreshingly sympathetic to Christianity. Indeed one is struck by the idea that if it wasn't for the teachings of Christ and his church, current notions of human rights as influenced by las Casas and men like him, would not have manifested themselves in the world. The book is by no means a hagiography, it relays the facts with brutal accuracy, and yet still shows that though Christians are sinners and the church is not immune to corruption, Christianity has been a force for good in this world.

Impactante
By V. Eng

Prayer Scriptures
By Berrcat
Everything the Bible Says About Prayer

I'm afraid the title is misleading. This book is too small to be that comprehensive. It is actually just bigger than a pamphlet at 126 pages and is mostly a hodgepodge of scriptures about prayer, related to prayer, and a few prayers. I found it interesting reading with my quite time, but some of the scriptures seemed to be out of context (not the ones you would think), especially the scriptures coming from the book of Job recited by his friends. They really were not even about prayer. They were about Job's life and why bad things were happening to him. II Samuel 12:16 was also included which was referring to David praying for his sick child. What it does not tell you is the rest of the story, as a famous commentator would put it (whose name is currently beyond my memory), that David was told this child would die as a result of his sin, and the child did, in fact, die. It is interesting, however, that David prayed anyway, hoping, that God might change his mind.

I did find some scriptures that were enlightening and encouraging for me, like Jonah's prayer in the belly of the whale. The chapter, "An Ally Amid Adversity" was well put together. I also was blessed by Hannah's song of thanksgiving and King David's prayer of thanksgiving. These "Timeless Tutors" are a great place to turn when you want to read the prayer of Jabez, Habukkuk's prayer of praise, and other prayers by famous people in the bible. The "Thoughts on Prayer by Classic Christian Writers" was icing on the cake. There are a few comments by those who put this book together, but mostly, it is scripture.

This book was given to me by Bethany House Publishers for review.

Almost everything
By One Desert Rose
Everything the Bible Says About Prayer is a comprehensive listing of prayers prayed by Bible heroes and the Lord Jesus Himself, though it's not a complete listing.

This book has been compiled by Keith Wall, and is useful to understand the elements of effective prayer, answers to prayer, and Jesus' teachings on prayer, which are contained in chapters one through four. It has been organized into different categories, making it useful when you need a Biblical prayer for a specific need, which are outlined in chapters five through thirteen. The appendix shares timeless truths from some of the classic Christian Writers. Reading the Scriptural prayers on a specific topic by chapters brought about hope and faith as I read them.

Some of the categories include prayers for: Guidance; Wisdom; Forgiveness; Salvation; Justice; Protection, Healing; Wholeness; Hardship; Heartache; Provision; Prosperity; Praise; Answers to prayer; Jesus' teachings on prayer; Praying with boldness; and Elements of prayer.

Though not a complete listing, the Scriptures contained in the chapters are comprehensive enough for a start. The reason I say it's not complete is because of all the prayers listed in my favorite chapter, Psalm 119.

The appendix includes thoughts on prayer that are necessary for a complete prayer life: Praying God's promises; Waiting on the Lord; God hearing us; Taking time for prayer; United in prayer; Meditation; Persevering prayer; Praying confidently; Intercessory prayer-the many aspects that some of us tend to forget. We learn that God hears and answers, but in His timing. I found this section very helpful in being steadfast in prayer when answers don't seem to be coming.

The thing that made it uncomfortable for me was all the different versions that were used. I prefer the word-for-word translations (NASB, KJV, ESV, and NKJV) versus the thought-for thought (NIV, NCV, HCSB) and paraphrase versions (THE MESSAGE, NLT). The latter two seem to water the Word down too much and lose the true Greek and Hebrew meanings.

This book was provided free by E. Hollister of Baker Publishing Group in exchange for my honest review. No monetary compensation was exchanged.

prayer passages
By B. Dempsey
Book Review: Everything the Bible Says About Prayer
The title pretty well sums up this book on prayer. While not an exhaustive reference on prayer, this 126 page paperback contains the major Scriptures found on prayer grouped according to categories in chapters. Some of these chapter headings include "Praying with Boldness, Elements of Effective Prayer, and Prayer in Times of Hardship and Heartache." Each chapter begins with a short explanation and then the passages are quoted in various Bible versions with just a few notes here and there.
There is also a small appendix in the back of the book called "Thoughts on Prayer by Classic Christian Writers." Spurgeon, Moody, Murray and others are quoted here for the reader's benefit.
This book is nicely arranged and would possibly make a nice gift for someone. It is one of those books you can pick up and read quickly or just read the chapters that interest you. While not anything spectacular, I would say I liked the layout better than the average compilation of Scripture passages around a common theme type book.
5 out of 5 stars
I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Compassionate Woman: The Life and Legacy of Patricia Locke, by John Kolstoe

Compassionate Woman is the biography of a woman of Lakota and Chippewa heritage who was the winner of a MacArthur Foundation fellowship in 1991 for her work to save tribal languages that were becoming extinct throughout the United States. This fascinating biography of Patricia Locke, who was given the name Compassionate Woman, gives us a glimpse into the life of someone dedicated to restoring justice and helping those in need. Her life of service began in Anchorage, Alaska, when she founded a community center aimed at assisting Native Americans, Eskimos, and Aleuts—who had moved to the city from villages—to cope with some of the problems they encountered. She then went on to work for the Western Interstate Counsel for Higher Education, where she focused much of her energy on establishing colleges on reservations. She was particularly concerned with improving education for American Indians and worked hard toward advancing education on reservations so that Native American culture and language could be woven into the curriculum. She also spent many years as a freelance writer, instructor at various universities, and activist on behalf of the poor and oppressed. In addition to the MacArthur Fellowship, Locke was the first American Indian to serve as a senior officer on the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahai's of the United States, and she was posthumously inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.

Great overview of Patricia Locke's life and legacy
By DC Reader
I started reading this book not knowing much about Patricia Locke's life, and ended it with a sense of having had a great introduction to her family and personal background, and how that fueled her life's goals and her sense of responsibility in bringing justice to American Indians and others who have been denied full equality in society and under the law. The book also does a nice job of providing insight from the people who knew her in her different roles, as a mother and grandmother, as an activist, as a friend, as an author, and how, for her, all these different aspects were at once focused and integrated. Finally, the book provides a great summary of Patricia Locke's triumphs in getting laws and policies changed, and in the building of institutions, such as colleges on Indian reservations, with curricula that reflect the importance of American Indian culture and values. The introduction cautions readers that it is likely that people who knew Patricia Locke well will find "Compassionate Woman" incomplete. I suspect it is. After knowing what I know from this first attempt to paint a portrait of a great individual, it will take many willing to step forward and do the work of capturing such a rich persona. This book opens the door for others to offer their insights into the life of someone who has left an indelible imprint on the world.

Compassionate Woman: The Life and Legacy of Patricia Locke
By jme
I'm so happy that John Kolstoe wrote this tribute to one of the greatest women of our time. Patricia Locke was the perfect person to show what true humility is. She is a role model for every girl and woman. The book was not only a wonderful view of a very full life, but it will be a reference book on our bookshelves. It has been recommended to our local library in Jefferson City, MO and will be on their bookshelves very soon.

Inspiring tory of what one person can accomplish
By MH Smith
Patricia Locke is not a well-known American heroine. Yet her legacy is an inspiration as to what one person can accomplish when they stay true to their values and have strong convictions. She should be held up a a role model, especially for American young women. She was strong and unafraid of speaking out to challenging authority to bring about social justice change for Native Americans. Her participation on a project often occurred behind the scenes and went unrecognized, but that didn't stop her from going forward. She worked at the local, state ad federal level to achieve her goals.

Flat-Out Love (Flat-Out Love Series Book 1), by Jessica Park

He was tall, at least six feet, with dirty blond hair that hung over his eyes. His T-shirt read Nietzsche Is My Homeboy.

So, that was Matt.  Who Julie Seagle likes. A lot.  But there is also Finn.  Who she flat out loves.

Complicated? Awkward?  Completely.

But really, how was this freshly-minted Boston transplant and newbie college freshman supposed to know that she would end up living with the family of an old friend of her mother's? This was all supposed to be temporary.  Julie wasn't supposed to be important to the Watkins family, or to fall in love with one of the brothers.  Especially the one she's never quite met. But what does that really matter?  Finn gets her, like no one ever has before. They have connection.

But here's the thing about love, in all its twisty, bumpy permutations—it always throws you a few curves.  And no one ever escapes unscathed.

New York Times best-selling author Jessica Park mines the territory of love’s growing pains with wit, sharp insights, and a discernible heat and heartbeat. Beautiful!
By Melissa C. Douthit
Occasionally you come across a book that goes so deep, it stuns you. This was one of those stories. Without giving away too much, the basic storyline goes something like this: Julie is a newly minted college student who arrives in Boston and due to an unfortunate turn of events involving craigslist and a burrito joint, finds herself homeless. But not to worry, her mother calls her and tells her she can stay temporarily with the family of an old college friend until she finds an apartment. Or so she thinks. As she proceeds, in vain, to find a suitable apartment, she begins to get to know the family, becomes comfortable with them and settles in, eventually learning their strange eccentricities and falling in love with them. The more and more the inexplicable oddities pile up, however, she becomes suspicious that all is not well, until the big revelation at the end (not going to give it away).

I have to say I knew what was really happening one-fourth of the way into the book, but I still didn't know the details about the older brother and regardless, loved the ending. There's a reason this book is called Flat Out Love. Because despite the precariousness of our human condition, the shallowness of our sanity, and the fragility of our minds, love (flat out love) is the only thing that can heal our emotional wounds and bring us back to that level that we call sane or "normal", however elusive or ethereal that is. Flat Out Love is an exploration into the human psyche, how it behaves in extreme circumstances, and how it heals itself with this beautiful thing called love.

So, although terribly cliched and used by way too many readers, I'm going to say it, too. I flat out loved this book. Buy it. Read it. You will flat out love it, too!

My hat goes off to you, Jessica Park! What a terrific book!

AMAZING READ!
By Emma Snow
I’m going to try very hard not to be all gushy and a flat out girl. Even though, it is what I am. Sorry folks, can’t argue with biology.

Flat-Out Love was a book that was recommended to me by my Kindle Paper White the day I received it in the mail. I checked it out and after deciding that it was a good gamble I bought it. Needless to say, I do not regret my decision. I absolutely fell in love with Jessica Park’s unique, witty, and quirky writing style. It’s a fresh and new read that will have readers fully engaged and enthralled until the last page.

After Julie Seagle finds herself apartment-less in Boston, her mother, Kate, comes to the rescue. Kate contacts an old friend from college who resides in Boston and has her daughter there faster than you can say Nietzsche Is My Homeboy. Cue in incredibly smart, techy, cute, and sweet Matthew Watkins. It’s in that moment that Julie’s life becomes interwoven with the Watkin’s. She never expected to get close to them. Never expected to think of them and their house as home. And she most certainly did not expect to fall in love with Finn Watkin’s, the older son who she has never met but knows fully like she’s never known another boy before.

There’s a secret surrounding Celeste and what happened to her. Celeste is the youngest daughter in the family. She’s rather quirky and very mature for her age. From the moment that she walks into the Wakin’s home there is some mystery surrounding Celeste. Everyone seems to be walking on egg shells around her and oddly go around with her protective nature over Flat Finn – a life size cut out of her older brother. You see, Finn is traveling the world and Flat Finn is a way for Celeste to deal with her brother being away.

Of course, there is something more. The secret itself broke my heart because I didn’t see it coming whatsoever. I had my own theory, but I was very wrong. I mean how could I think that Matt had some sort of personality disorder? I am the worst at coming up with theories.

But I’m getting way ahead of myself here. Let’s talk characters. I loved Julie Seagle, she reminded me of my best friend Anna with her witty facebook status and how just….intellectual she was. Julie is passionate, funny, and witty. I loved her bantering with Matt. It just made me gush like a crazed teenage girl. Also, Julie was very relatable to me as a person because she was around my age. She’s just starting college and with that comes her journey on unknown territory, trying to navigate her way around school, friends, and matters of the heart.

Moving on to Celeste Watkins, who is a central character to the story. She’s a fragile young girl, trying to figure out who she is, trying to be a normal teenager. Her journey of self-discovery and healing is one that I will remember for a long time.

Then there are the novel’s two love interests, Matt and Finn. *sigh* Can I just have them? I mean…either one will do. Up first is Matt. I just loved how Matt was so brainy, techy, and sweet. He’s very protective of Celeste and loves her so much. It’s an admirable quality in a boy. And I think it’s just the sweetest thing ever. He’s also very broken…and I didn’t realize this until the very end when there is a scene where everything just falls apart and I just wanted to hug him close to me and tell him that everything would be okay, that I loved him.

See what I mean! This book….*sigh*

Next is Finn *cue in loving sigh* …who is just so dreamy. He’s that boy who we’ve never met in person but fall in love with because of his personality. Or that boy you’ve been writing love letters to but don’t know who he is. Have any of you experienced that sort of thing? I have and…it can be so sweet at first and then shattering. Because you realize it just can’t work. Which is what happens in the novel but on a whole different level. Like I said, my heart was completely broken and I was trying to stifle my heart breaking cries at 2 in the morning! I didn’t want to wake up anyone with my blubbering whale noises.

Lastly, Mr. and Mrs. Watkins play a vital part in the novel because…well, they are never around. Which arises a few questions in how it affects Celeste and Matt. All the members of the Watkins family are emotionally scrambled. They’ve lost who they were because of something that happened, something that emotionally unhinged them all.

There are of course other characters like Kate Seagle, Dana, Seth, and Mr. Seagle who play an integral part to the story and Julie’s life. Her relationship with her father is jarring and tugged at my heart strings.

I can’t fully express how much I loved this story! Indie books are a hit or miss in my opinion. Sometimes you come across really horrible ones that just make you lose your faith in self-publishing. But then there are others that are beautiful and utterly amazing. Flat-Out Love is one of those books. I recommend it to anyone, both young adult and adults. It’s witty, uniquely crafted, mysterious, humorous, devastating, dipped in social media, and wildly addicting. You just can’t go wrong.

Original and Charming
By S. Paulsen
FLAT-OUT LOVE is currently being touted by Amazon as an example of their self-publishing program. Apparently some people find this offensive. I'd urge you to separate the book from the company, however. There's no reason to penalize either this book or the author for Amazon's advertising choices. The fact is that FLAT-OUT LOVE is an original and charming story that is every bit as good as the genre fiction being produced by the Big Six.

FLAT-OUT LOVE is not a complex work, but a heartfelt one and a creative one. The protagonist, Julie, is very likeable and her development as a young adult is charming. Unlike many works that are tagged as YA, this book is about imperfect people, not just those who struggle only because they are missing a parent or money. Julie and the family she attaches to during her freshman year in college are nerdy, maladjusted, disturbed, and genuinely loveable. Their journey through their tragedy and towards healing is genuine and heartrending. Tears are a given during the last quarter of the novel, but it's worth it, because these characters deserve to happy, and you're willing to endure their pain in order to get to the payoff.

If you're looking for literary fiction, this isn't the book for you. This isn't a beautiful medley of words and images. FLAT-OUT LOVE is genre fiction, and the storyline and interactions between the characters are the point. That isn't to say that the writing here is poor, it is as good as the majority of genre fiction, but the point is the story, and the story is a great one. If you're interested in something with a similar feel that has magnificent writing as well as a fascinating story, check out David Eggers A HEARTBREAKING WORK OF STAGGERING GENIUS, which is classified as non-fiction but reads like fiction and lives up to every word in its title. However, if you want to take a couple of days to read something that busts the formulaic mold of most YA and romantic fiction and is funny as well as heart-wrenching, then take a look at FLAT-OUT LOVE. Personally, I'm very glad that Jessica Park decided to self-publish her novel, she's a solid writer and a talented story-teller who is well-worth the read.

Fast Future: How the Millennial Generation Is Shaping Our World, by David D. Burstein

A millennial examines how his generation is profoundly impacting politics, business, media, and activism

They've been called trophy kids, entitled, narcissistic, the worst employees in history, and even the dumbest generation. But, argues David Burstein, the millennial generation's unique blend of civic idealism and savvy pragmatism will enable us to overcome a deeply divided nation facing economic and environmental calamities.

With eighty-million millennials (people who are today eighteen to thirty years old) coming of age and emerging as leaders, this is the largest generation in U.S. history, and, by 2020, its members will represent one out of every three adults. They are more ethnically and racially diverse than their elders and have begun their careers at a time when the recession has set back the job market. Yet they remain optimistic about their future and are deeply connected to one another. Drawing on extensive interviews with his millennial peers and compelling new research, Burstein illustrates how his generation is simultaneously shaping and being shaped by a fast-paced and fast-changing world.

Part oral history, part social documentary, Fast Future reveals the impact and story of the millennial generation--in its own words.

Review
"An inspiring look at what the millennial generation is doing in America."
Kirkus Reviews

"With careful research and thoughtful observation, David Burstein holds a mirror up to his own generation and tries to help all of us better understand who they are, what matters to them, and how they may shape the future. Everyone who is fascinated by Millennials--and how can we not be?--will learn something from this book."
Judy Woodruff, PBS NewsHour

"We are leaving the young with an unacceptable future--ballooning debts, unthinkable tax increases, historically slow growth, an economy vulnerable to crises, and a paralyzed politics.  Until now, the involvement of the young has been viewed as a combination of ignorance and apathy. I was delighted to read Fast Future, a book with such a hopeful outlook."
Pete Peterson, Former Secretary of Commerce and Co-Founder, The Blackstone Group

"Fast Future is an incisive look at the generation that elected Barack Obama and is changing the way we do everything. David Burstein has written a must read book about the most individually empowered generation in history--his own."
Howard Dean, Former Governor of Vermont

"David Burstein is living proof of why the millennial generation is so promising. Like other millennials, Burstein is idealistic yet pragmatic, globally minded, and determined. In Fast Future, Burstein pulls from his own experiences and observations to depict a generation well suited to tackle the seemingly insurmountable challenges before us. Fast Future is at least as much a telling of the generation's story as it is a declaration of its potential."
David Gergen, Senior Political Analyst, CNN, Professor, Harvard Kennedy School

Preface

In the fall of my sophomore year in high school, two friends approached me with an idea. Many of our peers in film class had produced great work, but there was nowhere beyond the classroom where these films could be shown. We had a solution: create a first-of-its-kind film festival exclusively for high school students. It sounded like a fantastic idea, and we couldn’t wait to get started. During the next seven months we built a team, raised thousands of dollars, gathered submissions from around the world, secured corporate sponsors, and convinced a local movie theater to donate their venue to us. In May 2004, the first Westport Youth Film Festival took place. We screened sixty films, and hundreds of people flocked to see the work of young filmmakers they did not know. It was a success. And it has lived on: I’m happy to say that the festival will celebrate its tenth anniversary this year.

This story illustrates two things that I think are unique about my generation. First, looking back on it, I find it remarkable that not one of my collaborators ever stopped to ask, “Can we do this?” We never thought, “We’re just high school kids, we can’t put on a film festival.” We had no earthly idea how to go about it. But we learned how to do it quite well by “bootstrapping,” a term from today’s entrepreneurial language that we would have used then if we had known it. Just two decades ago, it was unusual for high school students to start their own organizations, businesses, and initiatives. But, as you’ll see throughout this book, today it has become far more common. The fact that a group of fifteen- and sixteen-year-olds believed we could create a film festival without any prior experience is a true testament to our generation’s potential.

The second thing that strikes me was the sophistication, quality, and content of the films we screened. Most of the films were thoughtful and dealt with important, relevant themes. We screened films that dealt with gang violence in students’ neighborhoods, teen suicide, drugs, and education. One student made a documentary about her parents’ interracial marriage. Even the comedies were smart and original rather than sophomoric. Devoted young filmmakers have been able to create their own work for several decades, but the new affordability and accessibility of film technology and tools have allowed virtually everyone to be a creator, and many are creating meaningful content.

The following November, I invited two dozen friends (many of whom were part of the festival team) over for an election-night party. There was pizza, popcorn, soda, and the self-caricaturing madness that is cable news election coverage. We watched as each set of polls closed and results were projected state by state. All the safe states for Kerry and Bush were called first, putting Kerry at a mathematical Electoral College advantage. It was a school night, so my friends peeled off and left by midnight, even though the outcome was still unclear and the biggest states were yet to be decided. We were all expecting that young people would turn out at the levels so many youth activists had hoped and worked for. But the anchors and pundits declared it another disappointing turnout by young voters.

While I couldn’t yet vote, the 2004 election was the first in which I could understand the details of the election and the candidates. I understood the importance of the youth vote. I also knew that young people did not have an impressive record of participation. When the final numbers came in for the 2004 presidential election, youth turnout was actually up 11 percent from 2000. Even so, that meant that just 48 percent of young voters had voted in 2004. Beyond my frustration with turnout levels, and with the media calling a substantial 11 percent increase in turnout “another failure of the youth,” I was most concerned with the implications: a few hundred thousand more young voters could have changed the course of history. My high school peers and I were active and engaged. We cared about politics and policy. While I knew the same was not universally true of my generation—indeed, it wasn’t even true for everyone in my school—I also knew that if we didn’t step up, our generation’s voice would get shut out of the political process. If the crucial connection between our future and our vote could be made clearer, our generation could become a political powerhouse. It was then that I decided to throw myself into what would become a massive effort to turn out young voters in the next presidential election in 2008.

Setting out in 2005 armed with nothing but a camera and a big idea, I began work on a documentary film called 18 in ’08, designed to encourage my peers to vote. In retrospect, I realize I never paused to ask how to make a film, I just started doing it. I traveled all over the country, interviewing a cast of over one hundred political leaders and thinkers, including senators Barbara Boxer, Robert Byrd, Chris Dodd, John Kerry, Joe Lieberman, and John McCain, Representative John Lewis, Governor Jeb Bush, Newark mayor Cory Booker, strategist James Carville, General Wesley Clark, and Academy Award–winning actor Richard Dreyfuss, as well as many young people from communities all over America.

The thirty-five-minute film that resulted premiered in 2007. Soon afterward, I created a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization, now called Generation18, that used the film to register, engage, and mobilize young voters. We held over 1,000 screenings, each followed by discussions and voter registration. Ultimately, we registered some 25,000 new voters, developed a celebrity get-out-the-vote public service announcement series, and 18 in ’08 was adopted in educational curriculums across the country. I was asked to explain young Americans’ political attitudes to visiting foreign correspondents writing about the United States election. I met with government officials from Botswana to help them figure out how to bolster youth involvement in their country. As I traveled our country, I was continually inspired and reminded of the power, promise, and potency of my generation. Much of what I was doing then and continue to do today was not possible for a young person to do just a few decades ago. The technological, media, and social networking tools we have available to us, and the recognition and respect now afforded to young people, have combined to provide my generation with incredible new opportunities.

As the campaign drew to a close, something else started to come into focus. I saw that my generation was reshaping areas outside of politics. I met members of my generation who were starting new kinds of businesses, organizations, and initiatives in record numbers. Their experiences turned out to be neither aberrational, nor occasional like the election cycle. While the national media had been focused on the role of young people in the election, a much bigger and largely unreported story had been unfolding. In these pages, I’m eager to share this story with you. Removing all of my own bias is impossible, but there is no better way to understand a generation than to hear about its experiences and worldview straight from the people who are in it.

Painful to read
By AmazonJavaJunki
First, this book is nothing short of painful to read...in fact, it is nearly embarrassing at times. The author, a young "Millennial" as he likes to remind the reader at least once per paragraph, seems to truly believe the Millennial generation is of a totally different substance than any before in history. Ahh...the arrogance of youth.

To substantiate this claim, the author goes on to provide numerous examples of how he and his friends in high school put together a film festival, participated in elections and so forth.

The book skips around from high school film festivals to elections, social media to political elections again...it was all over the place. A few facts and stats were scattered about to show the rapid growth of new tech use and how it is concentrated among the younger generation....a conclusion that is more than just a little obvious for just as equally obvious reasons. In fact, that is one of the major problems with this book...it is so UNaware of the reason, cycles and systems behind all these (less than) "exciting" differences.

Next, the author makes a mistake which is all so very common to his generation...not understanding the difference between a business and a project. Throughout the book he cites "examples" of "innovative business" which is not a business whatsoever. It is a cause, it is a project, it might even be a wonderfully worthwhile undertaking but it is not a business. It doesn't make money, it uses up a lot of time but fails to generate revenue. Ironic since many recent IPO's into some of the best known Millennial owned corp's have taken a beating for the same reason...lots of hype, little substance. Very much like this book...

Lots of hype - little substance. In fact, the author seems blissfully unaware of how easily manipulated he/others seems to be; throughout the book there was one example after another which the author felt to be a bragging point but which would chill the blood of any free-thinking, creative individual from prior generations. That was perhaps the biggest 'take-away' of the entire book. If THIS is the future...heaven help us all.

A fast read, but a worthwhile one?
By Strategos
The book is almost a series of essays into the trends and nature of the Millennial Generation, but it's not very balanced. The author does acknowledge some negatives in several areas, but very briefly. The book mostly seems to center around four ideas. 1. That the Millennial generation is far more awesome in every way than everyone thinks. 2. They are far more political than anyone thinks and all moving toward liberalism. 3. They are all about technology which is awesome because it will cure the world's ills. 4. That all of the problems of the world that this generation experiences will be solved through idealism and newly learned/acquired know-how as the generation adapts.

While the author does debunk some common generational stereotypes, he creates new ones (are there any Millennial CRIMINALS or other undesirables in this shining new "Fast Future"?) , perhaps simply out of sheer enthusiasm and idealism for his subject-matter. And while an in-depth discussion of what this generation needs to do to overcome the enormous problems plaguing the world would be welcome and interesting, blind faith rather than real answers is the message of this book (if I were writing such a book I would mention the need for new centers of power created by this generation, new leaders who inspire and push hard for change, etc, etc rather than just saying in effect "They will figure it out".

Likewise the potential negatives of technology, while very intelligently debated against, are almost not even considered. Yes, people are adapting to a world literally overrun with technology. Yes, they are developing shorter attention spans and a totally different set of social and behavioral skills to navigate this Information Age, but NO ONE can be sure that this will result in a better world. And many very strong negatives were glossed over that I feel should not have been (social isolation, Internet addiction, anger and hatred spread through technology, health problems caused by inactivity). The author would have done better to give these some serious consideration. My view of the negatives of technology? I'm picturing something more akin to the song "In the year 2525".

If you're looking for a Millennial view of Millennials, this is your book. The author is full of enthusiasm for his subject, you've got to give him that. And his knowledge is closer to the source than many of the people who write about generation issues for well-known news websites (I know because I've read a lot of the stories that he cites and wondered about their statements a bit).

I do have to say that it's nice to have some of those generational myths debunked (it should be obvious by now that all old people and all young people naturally feel some resentment toward each other justified or not simply because of a lack of understanding). And the light and breezy writing style of the author makes for a quick, enjoyable, read. If you are looking for more than an advertising brochure for the next generation that discusses the REAL problems (all government funding for education being slashed into oblivion, the 1% gobbling up all the money and resources and blaming everyone else for worldwide financial collapse, global warming causing worldwide climate shift, the end of oil dooming us all to starvation when it runs out, nuclear waste, a decline in birth-rate resulting in millions dying or being cared for by robots) look elsewhere.

A little too cheerleader-like but still has value
By sanoe.net
Every generation likes to toot its own horn. Explain why it is better or at the very least, speaking as a GenXer myself, why it isn't doing as bad given the circumstances that it came from.

David D. Burstein's "Fast Future" is much like the latter in that he argues that the Millenials, those born in the 1980s and 1990s, are far more than how they've been sold. That they are more industrious and savvy regarding the circumstances and events that is shaping this particular generation.

Burstein uses many examples. Most revolve around the Internet which makes sense because as he points out, this is the generation that came of age as the Internet became common place to use.

But while Burstein is very good at giving a background of his generation, there was, for me, a bit too much of a cheerleader tone. Each generation has challenges in some form or fashion. Each generation slips and slides up and down the scale as it evolves.

So while I appreciate reading how Millenials (especially since my son is a Millenial) feel towards the world, Burstein's rah-rah was a bit off putting. Still, there is value in reading it and it was a very smooth and easy read.
