Hot-Melt Extrusion: Pharmaceutical Applications covers the main instrumentation, operation principles and theoretical background of HME with focus on HME drug delivery systems, dosage forms and clinical studies (including pharmacokinetics and bioavailability) of HME products. It also includes recent and novel HME applications, scale -up considerations and regulatory issues.

This important new book presents a comprehensive study on the pharmaceutical applications of hot-melt extrusion, a field which until now has remained fragmented. By addressing basic operation principles and critical aspects of HME as well as cutting edge trends of extrusion based manufacturing technologies the reader is able to understand the effective processes needed to develop pharmaceutical products from lab scale to commercialization.

About the Author
Dr. Dionysios Douroumis, Senior Lecturer, School of Science, University of Greenwich, UK
After completing his postgraduate studies Dr Douroumis worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Friedrich – Schiller University of Jena in the Department of Pharmacy, and later as a Senior Scientist at Phoqus Pharmaceutical plc, tasked with the development of sustained/pulsatile release formulations, orally disintegrating tablets and taste masking of bitter drugs; some of these studies were in collaboration with Evonik GmbH in Darmstadt, Germany. He is currently Senior Lecture at the in the University of Greenwich School of Science where he coordinates the course for the MSc Pharmaceutical Science Programme (350 students per annum) and is also a tutor for undergraduate studies in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

          The Generalship of Muhammad charts a new path by merging original sources with the latest in military theory in order to highlight Muhammad’s military strengths and weaknesses. This military biography of the Prophet of Allah is also an examination of how weaker forces can engage and defeat stronger opponents. Muhammad’s campaigns, military thought, and strategy are examined in order to trace his rise from humble beginnings to the creation of a movement that would lead him to become the virtual ruler of Arabia.
          Incorporating military, political, and economic analyses, Russ Rodgers investigates Muhammad’s use of insurgency warfare in seventh-century Arabia to gain control of key cities such asMadinah and Makkah. Seeking to understand the operational aspects of these world-changing clashes, Rodgers provides battlefield maps and explores the supply and logistic problems that would have plagued any military leader at the time.

Man of the Match

An extremely valuable look at the rise of Islam through the generalship of Muhammad. A stunning story, well told. Asserts that Muhammad's declaration that only Allah was to be worshiped was truly revolutionary, asking individuals to give up idols and family/clan loyalties for a new monotheism. He also points out how small was the percentage of Muslims even in Medina in the beginning and how narrow were the margins of victory at Badr (623) and The Trench (627) and the margin of defeat at Uhud (624). There is a fascinating chart on page 160 showing the growth in the use of horses in force projection (as opposed to camels) and their role in the expansion of the Muslim world, from 2 horses at Badr to 10,000 at Tabuk (630). Muslim "light horse" was to then the rule vast stretches of the Middle East and North Africa. Overall, Muhammad won three major battles and five sieges, losing one battle (Uhud) and failing at one siege (al-Ta'if). Rodgers also asserts that "Muhammad's campaigns came with a hefty price tag, much greater than many would assess today." But, says the author, "In this way, despite any weakness exhibited, Muhammad fulfilled the most critical dictum of warfare: he compelled his enemies to do his will." This is a most useful book for anyone seeking to understand the military rise of Islam.

This is a good book, packed with detail and insights, however, it is not an easy read and might be more appropriate for the academic.

Asymmetrical Islamic Warfare

The author Russ Rodgers has done it again with this "sequel" to his first book, "Fundamentals of Islamic Asymmetric Warfare: A Documentary Analysis of the Principles of Muhammad," this book was excellent but unfortunately is out-of-print, with used copies going for a crazy amount of money, Russ you need to re-release this book! ASAP!

This current title, deals with the insurgency campaign to dominate Makkah and ultimately Arabia. This dives into the Muhammad's philosophy and organization to execute this insurgency. This book ties Muhammad's philosophical views into the battles, reviewing how each influenced each other. The intent of the book is to focus on "how" Muhammad campaigned, fighting by irregular/unconventional warfare and won. The author also notes that in this research the Quran was referenced sparingly because it is not the best or most accurate source of information on the life of Muhammad. This was surprisingly refreshing to me.

This book does an excellent job tracing Muhammad's campaigns, military thought, tactical aspects and strategy of the rarely explained or studied generalship of this prophet. Overall this is a very good book that reads well for the layman and professional historian. However, you do not need to understand Islam or have a military background to enjoy this book.

Superb Book

This book is absolutely the best introduction to dynamic systems thinking I have read. Keeping all the equations in the appendix and using graphs to illustrate concepts opens it to a much wider audience than is usual in this area. Strongly recommended.

Critical transitions everywhere!

Few books are so good like this.

First, one should know that this book is based on the approach of complex systems that try to find similar patterns in (apparent) different contexts.

Second, this book presents a very simple introduction to dynamical systems.

Third, the main idea of this book is that the same kinds of phenomena take place in the major transitions in society and nature.

Forth, this book is a kind of journalistic introduction to the field recent reviewed by the author (and co-authors) in a paper of Nature "Early-warning signals for critical transitions, vol. 461, 08227, 2009".

Fifth, if you like this book and are also interested in financial markets, I believe that you also like the book due to Didier Sornette - Why Stock Markets Crash: Critical Events in Complex Financial Systems.

Excellent introduction to complexity and dynamical systems applied to natural systems

This is a good introduction to complexity and dynamical systems as applied to natural systems. Although it is relatively old (already 16 years), it contains sufficiently interesting material and insights to make it still relevant and a useful first read on the subject. It is also written in a very accessible way and can be read just for fun. As an earth scientist I had one or two points of disagreement on the sections on glaciations and climate change, on which I think the author is not an expert, but this does not diminish the overall merit of this book. A very recommendable read.

Texas History at its Best

In this third volume of his Western Quest Series, Stephen Turner again masterfully weaves some of the major events in Texas history with his matchless genealogical research. By the second book, I was a friend of the family, now I feel as if I were kin.

Though I am not a historian, I have long been a student of Texas history. I also believe in the power of stories to bring real past events to life. Dr. Turner allows, no helps, his readers to feel the real struggles pioneer families faced through the eyes of his ancestor Aaron Turner. Aaron is a Methodist Minister and a major in the militia and has to deal with early Indian troubles, civil war in Mexico, the ascent of Santa Anna, his treacherous dictatorship and eventual defeat. One does not have to be a serious student of history or a historian to be captivated by watching and feeling Texas history unfold through the emotions of one man and his family. One just has to love stories.

Stephen Turner skillfully and seamlessly takes us through the early years when Texas was part of Mexico, the Fredonian Rebellion, the Runaway Scrape, the Texans' famous challenge at Goliad, the Alamo and the battle of San Jacinto. Prose like this brings historical characters to life: "There was no fanfare or ceremony, the only observers a pair of white tail does. A rumpled giant of a man, mounted on a humble gray mule, splashed through an unnamed crossing of the Red River. He was dressed in greasy buckskins, heavily bearded in the Cherokee fashion. The Cherokee called him Raven." Dr. Turner is speaking, of course, of Sam Houston.

As a descendant of a Texas First Family, I now have a better understanding of their struggles, sacrifice, hardships, and bravery thanks to Stephen Turner, his ancestor Aaron, and Under Troubled Skies.

History, Told Up Close and Personal

The Turner family story continues to unfold in the Texas frontier that had previously been occupied only by indigenous peoples. Texas was a storied land filled with Indians, bison, deer, clean rivers, blue skies, and LOTS of potential.

As in the books leading up to this one, the reading is enjoyable and informative, with each chapter leaving the reader wanting to know what comes next. This is a story of the sparsely developed mythical place called "Texas", where the stories were bigger than life because the achievements and events were amazing. Even so, Texas was a land of relatively few settlers, and while many stories were exaggerated, the settlers were living the stories of mythic proportion that would become the Texas that we hear about today.

Aaron Turner's family was in Texas at a critical time, and the contemporary events laid the groundwork for the images of the Texas we know today. The people were giants, but they experienced all of the success and tragedy that you would expect in a frontier setting. As with the author's previous books, there is a large amount of fact mixed with the fiction. The magic of this series of books is that when you read the books, you are allowed to believe that you are part of the extended family. This makes it easy for the reader think... "well, maybe".

Under Troubled Skies is the best book out of the series yet, but I know Dr. Turner will have even better books for us in the future. This book lured me in on a day that I myself like the characters in the book had no electricity. Throughout school we were forced to read Texas history books that told us much of the facts of the time but with no one to connect with. This book gave us real people with real life adventures and hardships to connect with. Up until now I myself had not realized how "troubled" this time was for settlers of Texas, and in general all of mankind. When I was reading the part of the book where the indians were stealing the horses to my four year old he told me Dr. Turners grandpa is kind of like indiana jones huh. I thought that was cute. Thanks again to Dr. Turner for giving us yet another book that give us a peek into not just the lives of his ancestors but all of us Texans "founding fathers".

Questioning the Validity of this work!

Is it wrong to express disappointment in a book when it fails to live up to your expectations? I purchased this book because I have long been fascinated in the spiritual practice of animal spirits guiding and supporting us.

I didn't feel a strong spiritual connection or conviction concerning the topic from the author. He seemed to briefly tiptoe around the animals that he choose to write about. Even with that, there was little insight or voice to the information presented in the book. I felt like the content was read somewhere and regurgitated on the page with little else added.

I was surprised at the similarity between this book and Ted Andrews' "Animal Speak" book. I was really looking forward reading a new perspective on the power animals. There was absolutely nothing written in the "Power Animals" book that was not available in another book on the power animals.

The content on the pages is limited and lacking in depth. It basically is a cliff notes version for the Ted Andrews book. Save your money and purchase from another author.

Masterful analysis and writing

I came to this book after reading "The Deluge," Tooze's analysis of the inter-war years; "The Wages of Destruction" is as good as "The Deluge." ("The Deluge" is a prequel to "The Wages of Destruction," but reading "The Deluge" isn't necessary before reading "The Wages of Destruction.") The April 2007 reviews by Tom Munro and Philip Sim and the May 2015 review by David Hart are spot on, and I have nothing to add in that regard. Some observations, however, about reading the book: first, many of Tooze's conclusions run counter to the standard narrative of the war; to fully appreciate Tooze's analysis, you need to know quite a bit about the war in general. Second, the book dragged a bit for me as Tooze discussed the late 1930s; keep reading, however, and your patience will be rewarded when Tooze delves into the war years. Third, the book seems to be huge, but in the Kindle edition at least, the text is only 2/3 of the entire book, the tables and endnotes taking up the final third. Fourth, the text is mercifully free of jargon. If you have any interest in European history from 1919 to 1945, you need to read this book.

Magnificent!

This is a remarkable work of original scholarship, explaining (with ample statistics) Nazi economic and war production decisions, and their consequences, from the start to the end of the Nazi regime. It discusses in detail the economic and financial processes by which the Nazis took German economy from post-Weimar chaos to a powerful war economy--itself a fascinating story-- and the effects of these economic policies on the standard of living of the German people. Most of us have, at one time or another, been regaled with arguments that, if Hitler had not made this or that military decision, Germany might have prevailed in WWII. This book convincingly demonstrates that, although Germany initially achieved some cheap victories in the face of minimal opposition, Germany could not win the war once it faced determined opposition, because Germany lacked the economic wherewithal to conduct a protracted war against the US, Britain and the USSR.

Fascinating

I can't contribute much to the 90 other reviews (as of the time of this review), but did want to add my five star rating for the book.

I bought this book a few years ago but was hesitant to read it because I was afraid it would be a very boring read...in fact, while maybe not a page-turner, the book is rather interesting and fairly easy to read. The author makes several many very interesting points about the German economy before and during the war. But the book goes beyond economics in describing the author's view of the strategic rationale for the war, and why it unfolded the way it did.

The biggest take-away for me was just how resource-starved the Germany economy was even before the war began--from foreign currency, to steel, to food, to oil, to labor--Germany just didn't have the resources to conduct a sustained war effort. However, because Hitler figured that things would only get worse in the future, he decided the launch the war to grab resources while his enemies were relatively weak.

The author's description of the people involved in the Germany economy--including of course Albert Speer--is also very interesting.

In any event, a highly recommended read for anyone interested in World War II.

Great for resistant readers

My daughter likes vampire stories, but there aren't many for Tweens. This series is great! She doesn't read much, but these got her excited enough to ask for more. The stories are age appropriate (She is 11) and its written well with likable characters. I'm soooo glad we found these.

Publication date: 1920, two years before Mortal Coils, to which it bears a relationship such as Please Please Me bears to With the Beatles- less polished, less mature, but the debut of a clearly talented artist.

The stories seem to be front-loaded, the first two much more elaborate than the last five- The Farcical History reminded me of one of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Saturday Evening Post stories, but through a glass darkly- a sensitive undergraduate finds he has a subconscious personality which writes pot-boiler romances (and jingoistic propaganda when the war starts), which is a somewhat fantastic swerve for what starts as a naturalistic, even autobiographical 'sentimental education'-

"Good evening, Mr. Gay," she said, holding out her hand and shutting her eyes; it was one of her disconcerting habits, this shutting of the eyes. "What a pleasure it will be to hear you talking to us again about eschatology."
Gay, who had never talked about eschatology and did not know the meaning of the word, smiled a little dimly and made a protesting noise.
"Eschatology? What a charming subject!" The fluty voice belonged to Henry Cravister, the Headmaster's son, a man of about forty who worked in the British Museum. He was almost too cultured, too erudite.
"But I don't know anything about it," said Gay desperately.
"Spare us your modesty," Henry Cravister protested.

Happily Ever After is about a philosopher's visit to his professor's country home, the professor's daughter, and her fiance, who also visits on leave. What is already evident is the Huxleyan 'point-counterpoint,' the many points of view which are all, to a greater or lesser degree, self-deluding:

"Gibbon," Mr. Petherton had said, "certainly, my dear. How delightful it is to look at these grand old books again. One always finds something new every time."
Marjorie gave him to understand that she had never read it. She felt rather proud of her ignorance. Mr. Petherton handed the first of eleven volumes to her.
"A great book," he murmured--" an essential book. It fills the gap between your classical history and your mediaeval stuff."
"Your" classical history, Marjorie repeated to herself, "your" classical history indeed! Her father had an irritating way of taking it for granted that she knew everything, that classical history was as much hers as his. Only a day or two before he had turned to her at luncheon with, " Do you remember, dear child, whether it was Pomponazzi who denied the personal immortality of the soul, or else that queer fellow, Laurentius Valla? It's gone out of my head for the moment." Marjorie had quite lost her temper at the question--much to the innocent bewilderment of her poor father.

One more quotation from "Eupompus,"

"Years ago, when I was first reading Ben Jonson's Discoveries, that queer jotting of his, 'Eupompus gave splendour to Art by Numbers,' tickled my curiosity. You yourself must have been struck by the phrase, everybody must have noticed it; and everybody must have noticed too that no commentator has a word to say on the subject. That is the way of commentators--the obvious points fulsomely explained and discussed, the hard passages, about which one might want to know something passed over in the silence of sheer ignorance. 'Eupompus gave splendour to Art by Numbers'--the absurd phrase stuck in my head. At one time it positively haunted me. I used to chant it in my bath, set to music as an anthem. It went like this, so far as I remember"--and he burst into song: "' Eupompus, Eu-u-pompus gave sple-e-e-endour . . ."' and so on, through all the repetitions, the draggedout rises and falls of a parodied anthem.

But Eupompus seems only half-Huxleyan. The set up is great, but the ending just a little too slapdash. Funny, mordant, but not something only Huxley could have done. The stories which follow (and which are probably in fact earlier) are even less distinctive. Hence, like, not love.
