In 2003, three U.S. Christian peacemakers weathered the first horrifying days of Shock and Awe in Baghdad only to be nearly killed in a car accident as they were leaving the country. Rutba is a Must Read!

Barrett's style reads as if he were sitting across the table telling you the story; it comes to life in your mind. Honest, well researched and, well, what an experience - both the account shared in the book and that of reading it. It would have to be with a foreword written by Archbishop Tutu, right? It's everything you'd hope for in fiction, yet it's all true. Powerfully, movingly true. Today I "played hookie" from work (I work at home) to read the last chapters on the back porch. The first few were so riveting (I immediately sent copies to three special people in my life!) I just couldn't resist the urge. The players, including the writer, are all admirable people of conscience with fascinating back-stories of their own, each in their own ways fierce warriors for peace and such gentle, courageous human beings that I just had to know what else happened. After finishing their story I'm still drying the tears. After reading it through, the simply stated but unspeakably profound exchange between a Chaldean Christian bishop and peace activist Shane Claiborne at the end really got me, and the closing lines just took me apart. My hope for humanity is renewed and so is my own heart.

For anyone of any faith who is serious about their walk with God, it's a must-read. For anyone looking for a more personal view and a fair dose of little-known information about the war in Iraq - you must read. For any compassionate soul looking for inspiration, strength, hope - you really must read. For any American who doesn't understand the views people in other countries have of the USA or why, definite must-read. For anyone who believes love and humanity don't stop with those like you, but are all-inclusive, who believes we are all brothers, who longs for some kind of connection with people of other cultures, who believes in peace...you'll be so glad you read this book!

Once you do read it, you should check out Barrett's first book, The Gospel of Father Joe: Revolutions and Revelations in the Slums of Bangkok. Discovered it last year and loved it so much...

Relevant and Inspiring

After so many years of war and occupation in Iraq, the image of Iraqis in the American consciousness has become wildly skewed from reality. The Gospel of Rutba provides a timely account of ordinary Iraqis providing hospitality to Americans, despite the violence and destruction happening throughout their country. Barrett's writing is highly readable and his story inspiring.

A Forgotten War Already?

The Gospel of Rutba is a must read regardless of your views on the invasion of Iraq and in spite of the fact that many of us would prefer not to dwell on that topic if we can avoid it. The book examines just one life-threatening incident -- among literally countless others across war-torn Iraq -- and invites us into the lives of those who lived through it. The reporting and research are first rate (even the footnotes are jaw-dropping) as one might expect from Barrett, a former journalist. However, the book is much more than a purely objective chronicling of events. Gospel of Rutba will make you care more deeply about "collateral damage" and about the innocent civilians whose lives end or just get turned upside down when America goes to war. Absolutely riveting!

Great Grammar Resource on Today's English Language

As a copyeditor, I witness firsthand how the English language is always changing. Words and phrases take on new meanings over time. Definitions change; words are used interchangeably. The great rivalry between prescribers and describers continues.

I read all of Grammar Girl's tips and books. This new release is no exception and very much necessary in today's world. There are a total of 101 troublesome words that are tackled--most of which were not covered in previous Grammar Girl books. If you are unsure what words are acceptable to use in today's English language, this is a helpful guide. Grammar Girl did all of the research and makes great recommendations with example sentences. I did not agree with all of the choices, but can certainly appreciate a different point of view. 101 Troublesome Words You'll Master In No Time is complete with cute related drawings and quick and dirty tips to accompany the words and phrases.

Some of the troublesome words featured are:

African American (difference between African American and Black)
Couldn't Care Less (as opposed to "could care less")
E-mail versus Email
I'd've (contraction for "I would have")
Lay versus Lie
Momentarily (mistakenly used to mean "in a moment")
Noisome (nothing to do with noise but to describe smells)
Out Loud (as opposed to "aloud")
Peruse (incorrectly used to mean "browse")
Than I versus Than Me
Utilize (when in doubt, choose "use")

Fun reading and an invaluable resource for anyone who writes

As an avid reader, occasional writer, and part-time professional proofreader, I've found Grammar Girl's books and website ("Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing") to be a goldmine of useful reference material. She's always spot-on, not only in clearly explaining the rules of grammar, but in making grammar actually interesting. What I like most is that she understands that grammar is a tool and not the end goal, and that sometimes, the rules may be bent or broken.

Grammar Girl's 101 Troublesome Words You'll Master in No Time is the latest book in Grammar Girl's "101 words" series. The book begins with the statement "English is always changing, and that leaves us with troublesome words and phrases that are only sort of wrong." That's a primary theme of the book - the conflict between grammarians about flexibility and adapting to the times versus honoring hard-and-fast rules of the past. Most writers, caught in the middle, just want a simple answer for spelling and word usage. And that's what Grammar Girl delivers in her book.

The book presents 101 examples of common words and phrases that are often misspelled or misused. Grammar Girl gives the background of the word or phrase, her interpretation of the rules, and some actual examples, often from contemporary sources. One of my favorite - and most helpful - was the explanation of the "bi-" prefix. Does, for example, "biweekly" mean twice a week or every two weeks? Grammar Girl's solution may surprise you, but it makes perfect sense, and solves the conundrum completely.

The book has a number of examples of similar words whose meanings are often confused, such as preventive/preventative, alternate/alternative, and amused/bemused. There are some word pairs with very subtle differences in meaning and usage, such as use/utilize and jealous/envious. For these words, Grammar Girl mentions the etymology, where appropriate, and gives examples of correct usage, often referring to various dictionaries and style guides.

There are some phrases whose original meanings have been lost over time, and trying to reestablish correct usage may be a lost cause. Grammar Girl lists a few of these, such as "begs the question" and "could care less." She cites the origin of these phrases and gives the correct meaning, but she acknowledges that they're going to be misused by many people in speech and in writing.

Some entries get a bit whimsical. What is the acceptable plural of "fish" - is it "fish" or "fishes?" The answer: it's "fish," but the Mafia often sends stoolpigeons to sleep with the "fishes"! And is the proper spelling of a favorite pastry treat "donut" or "doughnut"? It used to be "doughnut," but in 1950, an event occurred that would change everything.

Grammar Girl's 101 Troublesome Words You'll Master in No Time certainly isn't your grade school English grammar book. If those books had been half as interesting as Grammar Girl's books, we would all be better off today.

Perfect addition to any writer's shelf

Mignon Fogarty, aka Grammar Girl, is back again helping the writers around the world with the English language. In this short book she tackles 101 of the most troublesome words in the English language and when to use them correctly. For example are you feeling "alright" or "all right"? When is the right time to use the phrase "African American" and does it need to have a hyphen in it? These are some of the words that Mignon tackles with clear definitions, fun quotations, and examples of which word to use when. There are also amusing little illustrations throughout the book to raise the reader's interest--such as on the flaunt page an aardvark in a disco suit. While the work is subjective (these are Mignon's opinions) it's nice to have a handy guide from an expert to refer to. For those folks that struggle with grammar (like me) or writers just looking for some assistance with word choice, I recommend picking up this book and giving it a read. 5 out of 5 stars

About the Author
Milan Radosavljevic, Lecturer in the University of Reading's School of Construction Management and Engineering following several years as a Demonstration Projects Coordinator for Scotland and as a Production Director within an off-site construction company in Central Europe. His award winning PhD research used chaos theory in the development of the novel Process Planning Methodology. He is Director of the prestigious Reading MSc in Project Management and his interests are focused on the role of Building Information Modelling in production management within the Total Construction Service strategy.

John Bennett, Professor in the University of Reading's Department of Construction Management & Engineering for 25 years following 20 years of successful practice in the UK and internationally, founding editor of the leading journal, Construction Management and Economics, and Director of the University's Centre for Strategic Studies in Construction throughout its 12 years of influential research and publishing. The hallmarks of his academic career are researching international best practice and describing the essential messages in clear practical terms. Better than Relentless

The journey continues for Grant and his fellow Loci. From assisting police in LA to rescue efforts in Jerusalem, the group remains constantly busy and on the move. However, questions remain concerning Grant's destiny and the Secretum of Six. What exactly is his purpose? Can he change who he was meant to be? Can 7000 year old plans be altered, or are they destined to fulfillment?

Fearless is much better than Relentless. While it's still somewhat confusing, several things fall into place early on, which makes some of what happened in Relentless make more sense. I was pretty sure this series was of the `super hero' genre. Having that confirmed early on helped some of the previous book fit together a little bit better and set my expectations for this book. Previously, this was just a group of incredibly gifted people. Their gifts are better described as powers and that helps to put events into perspective.

Eventually, the group starts to split up, which allows for more opportunities for suspense. Instead of following a single story line, the plot began to separate and individual threads to be explored. The result was a desire to keep reading in order to pick up where certain threads left off. It made for a nicer read and kept me more interested in the overall plot.

Parrish also drew out some great themes. I'm looking forward to see how he continues to explore those in Merciless. I'm really enjoying the theme of deriving good from evil roots as well as the possibilities of free will conquering destiny. Some nice ideas to play with.

While some disagree, I really do think it was better than Relentless, especially the last 1/2-3/4. It began to pick up pace and the plots fan out and develop. I do agree the characters are a little flat and react rather than act, but at least I'm not annoyed with them in this book. For an author's second book, I think it's fairly solid.

A excellent "middle of the trilogy" book

First, I loved the writing style. The story was fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters were well developed. I enjoyed the plot and would highly recommend the series.

This was the middle of the trilogy and I was very hopeful as subtle themes of choice, free will and the fight of good against evil unfolded subtly in the background. It was a well written, suspenseful read.

I was, however, disappointed after reading the third book and looking back over where everthing came together. The thing that I was disappointed with was where the theology ended. It seemed a very Old Testament only theology.

The discussion on free will was sound, but just stopped too soon. As Romans tells us we are all sinners and there is not even one who seeks God. We do not use our free will to seek God. The author also clearly showed how even our motivation to do good is grounded in selfish motives, for fame, money, power, appreciation, acceptance or even to gain love. The disappointing factor for me is that it was not once referred to that Messiah came and died to break those bonds that keep us enslaved to sin and set us free to choose righteousness, because of the transforming power of Christ in us. In fact, I thought the ending showed a very non-Christian, humanistic view. Man makes a sacrifice and love triumphs. So my recommendation would be to enjoy the story, but don't think of it as a Christian book in any way.

A gripping story with surprise turns throughout. Had to read all three books in this trilogy being in suspense of knowing unexpected ending! Had to really key into reading as there were no chapter breaks or extended spaces when transitioning from one scenario to another.

Biscuit jumped up to touch the bouncing blue ball with the white stars. A little girl with a red baseball cap held out her arms and said, "Its time to play ball, Biscuit. / Woof, woof! / Look, Biscuit. / The game is about to begin." It was time for Biscuit to sit and watch, but not to play. That was something that the puppy was just not interested in. Nope, not at all.

Biscuit ran toward the children because he wanted to play ball too, but he little girl had to take him by the collar and tell him to stay. No, that would never do and he began to run toward them again. Kickball was fun and Biscuit wanted to play. "Uh-oh, biscuit. / Not again! / Woof, woof!" What could the children do to get Biscuit to keep out of the game?

This is another fun adventure with Biscuit, a puppy who wanted to play ball. This is a high-interest "My First" book for the emergent reader. A parent, caretaker, or teacher can read along with the child and laugh as Biscuit the mischief maker runs through these pages. Not a good thing for a toddler to learn before bedtime

My 16-month-sold daughter loves all the Biscuit books. I read it to her as bedtime stories.. I collected all the stories except "Biscuit Goes to Sleep" because it's about Biscuit pulling all kinds of tricks to avoid going to sleep. Not a good thing for a toddler to learn before bedtime. lol
