Disclaimers: I did not buy this book, I was given a copy by the publisher to review. I have bought a number of books by Harold Davis in the past and have liked them. I have a several other books on HDR and have attended a number of seminars on HDR. I mostly use HDRsoft's Photomatix Pro for my HDR photos. I have been lucky enough to attend several events run by Harold Davis and I have signed up for more.

The subtitle claims that this book is: "The Complete Guide to High Dynamic Range Photography" and it is certainly covers more different methods to obtain high dynamic range photos than any other book I have seen. No one book can cover everything in a field, but this book covers it better than any of the others I am aware of.

If you consider HDR as a method to avoid over and under-exposing different parts of the image, or to collapse the actual dynamic range of the image to something that can be printed or electronically viewed, then this book covers HDR from 1855(!!), through the Ansel Adams Zone System, dodging and burning prints, and into the modern digital images with RAW, TIFF and JPEG workflows. The main tools are covered with detailed screen shoots. Lesser methods are mentioned. Important is the discussion of which tool might be best under which circumstances. Also covered are problems and solutions before the shoot, during the shoot, and after. Extensions beyond simple HDR include HDR panoramas, multi-HDR processing, what to do with moving objects, etc. Harold also shows that HDR can do much more than create "grunge" photos. Non-grunge HDR examples in the book include flowers, glamour, and more.

Other examples in the book range from highways, machinery, trains, landscapes, canyons, waves, streets with people walking on them, full sun closeups of rocks in a crevice, male models, female models, buildings, furniture in old buildings, etc.

Strengths:
-- Very wide variety of different methods of gaining high dynamic range with film or digital
-- Not dogmatic (I have seen some experts claim certain methods were "Not HDR" even though they achieved the same goals)
-- B&W as well as color images covered
-- Suggestions for post processing after the HDR image has been generated (rare in other books)
-- Suggestions for what kinds of scenes would benefit from HDR
-- Suggestions for what generally wouldn't benefit (women's skin--but then he gives a counterexample)
-- Interesting unexpected uses (for flowers, cloth, models)

Weaknesses:
-- Does not cover all the methods in full detail (though suggestions are made for where to find the additional information, for example PhotoShop tutorials)

Conclusion: I think this is a very useful book for anyone interested in HDR. If you are a beginner it will give a broad overview, ideas on how to start, what types of photos to use HDR on, and what tools might be best for various kinds of starting images and final products. Recommended.

Clear, Thorough, Informative and Easy to Read - An HDR book that delights

I've spent the last weekend reading this new book by Harold Davis and I must say that he taught me a thing or two that I didn't know - and I was an early practictioner of high dynamic range imagery when it first broke on the scene years ago.

In fact, when I lead a photo tour these days - one of the first things that I'm asked is if there is a good book on HDR that I would recommend. Until recently, I didn't have one that I felt hit the mark. Now I do.

This book.

Why?

Because Mr. Davis does so many things "right" in this expertly written text. He explains how HDR works without a lot of technical mumbo jumbo. He talks about all the various ways images can be blended. He gives examples of before and after photos using the various HDR techniques. In fact, his chapter on getting the entire dynamic range and his twelve steps for shooting a full dynamic range are worth the price of the book alone. Too often photographers return home from a trip and are distressed that their images don't have the pop that they saw with their naked eyes. By using the advice in this fine book, they won't have that problem in the future.

He also has embedded several case studies. My favorite is a case study on page 106 that explains a step by step process for utilizing Lightroom to craft a piece of photography that becomes photo art. Each step fully explained and shown visually, and there's no better way to "see" what magic can occur when HDR is done in a similar fashion.

I was also pleased to see that he discusses things like the use of filters within an HDR workflow.

My guess is that this book will become a go to resource for photographers worldwide. If you are interested in exploring how HDR can expand your photographer's toolkit, then this is the book for you.

A Better Version Of Your Intended Vision.

Extending the range of light and dark areas in an image has been a challenge to photographers for ages. Any technique used to accomplish this is considered HDR (high dynamic range) photography. In this book Harold Davis shows us that this task can run the gamut from in camera filtration and manipulation to digital darkroom processing and sometimes both.

Mr. Davis takes us through the myriad of automated workflow software available today such as PhotoMatix, NIK HDR Efex Pro and Photoshop HDR Pro. He also guides us through the selection process as to which methods produce the intended results as well.
Helpful screen shots and entertaining stories of why and how the striking images were made abound.

The case studies: "Jesse" and "Forest Sonata" are particularly useful. These illustrate Multi-RAW processing using ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) and/or Lightroom then finishing in Photoshop. This workflow permits processing three tonal versions of the same image (light-mid-dark) to achieve a HDR image. Photographers will find this extremely valuable since they can either shoot with this workflow in mind or research their RAW files and locate single captures that would benefit from an extension of tonal range. This process facilitates producing a better version of your intended vision. These tutorials alone are worth the price of the book.

I have been a fan of Harold Davis art for many years. His compelling flower and landscape images immediately come to mind, however he is clearly accomplished in all facets of photography as so beautifully revealed here. Equaling his art, is his ability to convey to others, the achievement of those sometimes tedious processes which he successfully communicates in an engaging manner. Whether you are a neophyte or experienced HDR shooter, there is something of value in "Creating HDR Photos" for you. This is a definite 'must have' for your photographic library.

After faking his own death in the last book (a "pseudocide") and then taking on a second phony identity, the allegedly real 17-year-old protagonist of the Gospel According to Larry shows up on author Janet Tashjian's doorstep again, with another manuscript detailing his latest exploits. Last time around, Josh changed the world by fighting global consumerism as Internet alter ego Larry; this time, he's going for the big enchilada as just plain ol' Josh--in a run for the presidency and an attempt to change U.S. politics forever. (And who's his running mate? Unrequited love Beth, of course.)

After going underground as a student at C.U.-Boulder, Josh (briefly "Mark") finds his anti-consumer ideals slipping--he tries to maintain his vow of austerity ("fewer than 75 possessions, in constant rotation"), but the slippery slope of a new girlfriend and an even newer credit card finds Josh in a Polo sweatshirt and Nautica pajamas before he can say "Walden Pond." Fortunately, Beth sweeps back into his life again with a big plan--and, more importantly, the proper jealousy-fueled inspiration, thanks to her Harvard boyfriend--to bring Josh back from the "dead" and into politics.

Fans of Tashjian's last award-winning outing will love catching up with their favorite activist superhero, as an almost unbelievable presidential campaign unfolds, amidst copious pop-culture references (U2's Bono is back, and Josh and Beth appear on the Simpsons), real-life stats about youth and the distribution of wealth in America, and--instead of Thoreau, this time around--quotes from the likes of Martin Luther King, Jr., Jim Hightower, and Paul Wellstone. Grade 9 Up-Josh (aka Larry) is back-and so are Beth, Peter, Mom's spirit at Bloomingdale's, and even his old nemesis, betagold. This time, the topic de jour is politics-the electoral game, campaign financing, crooked politicians, and the power of the vote. The story begins with Larry finding a new girlfriend who has him out shopping and wearing designer clothes, until he is kidnapped by Beth, who wants him to return home and run for state representative. But that's not enough-Larry decides to run for president. Never mind that he is only 18-Congress can change that rule! When his campaign begins to gain momentum, the story's pace picks up, and the mysterious betagold reappears. Tashjian has written another sermonizing book disguised as Larry. Not that the lessons aren't interesting-they are-but in this book, they feel more like lessons. In The Gospel According to Larry (Holt, 2001) the idea was fresh and interesting, but this time it seems almost forced. The story itself is good, but is marred by sequel syndrome, unnecessary frills, and jumpy writing. Larry's fans will eat it up, but it needs Gospel to carry its weight.

Gr. 7-10. When readers left Josh Swenson, the anticonsumerism guru from The Gospel according to Larry (2001), he had faked his suicide to avoid the hoopla that was messing with his message. Here Josh finds his way back (well, his best friend, Beth, discovers him and then kidnaps him) to run for president of the U.S. Like the previous book (which probably needs to be read first), this is part allegory and part political thriller, and once again, Josh's plans to protect the planet and involve young people in the care and feeding of democracy go awry. The spirited story focuses on 18-year-old Josh's presidential campaign; although he's too young to be elected, a stunning show of support results in a constitutional amendment lowering the age of the president. However, even with the possibility of being the leader of the free world looming large, Josh still has plenty of time to decide whom he likes better--Beth or a new girl. Back matter allows readers to learn more about a handful of important political issues and informs them how to register to vote. Fans of the first book won't be disappointed in Josh/Larry's further escapades. Ilene Cooper

Not as good as the first

Don't get me wrong. I love this book. This book is all the way up there with my other favorites, but, however, is not anywhere near the first book, The Gospel According to Larry. Anyway, I love this book. I would reccomend it to anyone. Just make sure you read the first one before this one, or else you will be really confused.

This is the most optimistic book I have ever read. It toys with not only the idea that people WANT to change the world, but that they CAN, without superpowers or magic or an appearance on Oprah. This was a Kid Runs For President book without the immaturity; it focused less on the age of the candidate than on the issues-real, true, important issues-he's pushing. Is this book realistic? No, of course not--but instead of faulting the author, why not fault ourselves? Why couldn't a group of people who were willing to fight for something get the rest of us to care? Not only does Janet Tashjian provide real solutions to problems--exaggerated and stretched, but on the right track--but she also introduces the novel idea of the Critical Patriot: the person who sees the flaws of the country but doesn't retreat into cynical commentary. The person who actually loves this country with its flaws AND IS WILLING TO MAKE IT BETTER. Her realistic portrayal--using actual candidates, events, issues, and facts--makes it all the more relevant to us. I think that all teens should read this book, just as all teens should register to vote when they're old enough. Josh/Larry is the symbolic epitome of what teens COULD be--not necessarily candidates but activists, working to make America and the world a better place. This book takes a stand--so should we.

Educational Leadership

This is one of the core books for the course I teach to aspiring educational leaders. It is well written and focuses on the ethical and moral aspects of effective leadership, as well as the challenges and practical dilemmas. The only minor criticism I have is that there are more examples from New Zealand and some of them are not relevant to the situation in the US. Some of the comments about the US educational system are inaccurate. Nevertheless, students are inspired by this book and it helps them focus on the qualities of leadership as well as the content and skills.

Basic, but good

I needed this book for a class. It's a very good book for someone new to figure dawing. It has some parts that are a bit redundant, but some sections are very helpful, such as; specific points about drawing human hands and heads.
I wish there had been more of this sort of instruction instead of the huge portion of the book dedicated to gesture drawing and basic forms. In my opinion, these sections could have been greatly reduced.
Overall, this book is worth the price and very helpful for beginners.

Glory to God!! The truth is out!

Growing up in the Bronx, and having myself had experiences with Santeria, I can see how difficult writing a book like this must have been for John Ramirez. In the hispanic culture, there has always been this infusion of Santeria rituals and paraphernalia that, growing up around it, just seemed normal. I'm a Puerto Rican from the Bronx and I remember always seeing all the beaded necklaces, altars, candles and remember all the card readers and palm readers. I myself have fallen victim to some rituals by well-meaning family members which have plagued me for quite a while. We all grow up believing its how you fix certain problems, or are made to believe that we can change our luck by doing this or doing that. Going to a Botanica was like going to the grocery store and little did I know that evil surrounded me, because its just how we grew up (our culture). They are all lies and trickery from the devil to keep us far away from God and prevent us from being saved. I want to thank John for exposing the truth behind santeria and witchcraft because it helped to break some strongholds in my life and I believe it will do the same for many others. I strongly believe that sometimes we need to hear about the dark side so that we can be better prepared for battle. John has literally been to hell and back and is now saved by the grace of God and he is alive to warn us about what evil is out there. Thank you Jesus for it is by your blood that we are saved! I only pray that a spanish version is out there or at least in the works because there are many people out there that can benefit from this book but only speak spanish. Once I picked up Johns book I found it difficult to put it down. Having lived there, I can truly say that he paints such an accurate picture of that culture and life in the Bronx. I felt like I was being transported back in time and back to the old neighborhood. It takes courage to write down such things about yourself and share it with the world. John thanks for your story. I'm sure that it will bless many and show them that no matter how bad off you think you are, you can be saved if you just say yes to Jesus!

This is the best book I've ever read!

When I first read this book,with the flow of the contents it felt like I were watching a touching movie.I could see all the images showing up in front of me and I was totally immerging in the book.The whole true story easily clicks on me for it causes consonance in my mind.I appreciate John's compact writing style and absolutely excellent writing skills.I am so happy for John that he determinedly turned down the witchcraft which he used to be deeply involved and got rid of all he gained as a Santeria high priest and now has been focusing on his new born life in Christ. It's really a miracle that he used to be the devil worshipper with devotion until he accepted God and God rescued his soul from the Satan's hand.If a good person has no faith,they will easily be covered with the lies of enemy and cast themselves in the wrong way.Material comforts don't mean everything while nowadays people always are chasing after them.John not only opened a window to show us how God saved and changed him but also how he leads a life in God's way and glorifies His name.John is the first Christian of his family and God touched his family members gradually then they all become Christians.In this book we can see how God as a great potter has shaped the author,miry clay but full of potential,into a shining vessel that God uses him to pour out Jesus love to bless and touch more people.
I am just into it and wait for the part two released.

Fascinating account of demonic possession and deliverance

John Ramirez came to my school (Nyack College) to speak about his book. The class was assigned the book by our professor. The book can be read in a few days or even one day as it is easy reading. What a story! Everyone should read this book... it doesn't matter what your religious beliefs are. Many people (including Christians) are going to work, school and church without realizing that we are in an spiritual battle. A battle that is real but unseen for the most part. This is a battle between good and evil. Of course good wins (see the book of Revelation). Anyway, John exposes Santeria for what it really is devil worship and shows that tarot card reading - even innocently done opens up the person up to the demonic. The book is very encourgaging!. It shows God's great love for the backslider and that even a person who has literally sold his soul to the devil can be redeemed by the blood and sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. To God be the glory, Great things He has done!

Caroline Blackwood was born into the Guinness family in 1931, the daughter of the Fourth Marquess and Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava. Brought up on the ancestral estate in Northern Ireland, Blackwood moved easily among the Anglo-Irish aristocracy, the Soho bohemians of postwar England, and the liberal intelligentsia of 1960s New York. She was on intimate terms with some of the most celebrated artists and writers of her time. An unpredictable beauty known for her wit and her courage, she has been called a muse to genius. But her marriages to three brilliant men: the painter Lucian Freud, the composer Israel Citkowitz,
and the poet Robert Lowell were as troubled as they were inspiring.

During her marriage to Lucian Freud, Caroline became part of an artistic and literary group that included Francis Bacon and Cyril Connolly who was infatuated with her but eventually Freud's gambling caused irrevocable problems between them. Caroline was also in the grips of her own unfolding tragedy: a fatal attraction to alcohol that would plague the rest of her life.

Upon the breakup of her first marriage, she moved to America , where she met her second and third husbands. Once regarded as the obvious successor to Aaron Copland, Israel Citkowitz had stopped composing long before he met Caroline. While he and Caroline had three children together, it was her subsequent seven year marriage to Robert Lowell that she considered her "main marriage." Her life with Lowell was probably the most difficult time of her life as she dealt with his increasingly frequent and worsening attacks of mania. And to Lowell she was not only an inspiration but_as he described in his Pulitzer-prize- winning book of verse The Dolphin, she was also "a mermaid who dines upon the bones of her winded lovers." In 1977, Robert Lowell fled London to return to his former wife Elizabeth Hardwick. He died from a heart attack in the backseat of a taxi, clutching Girl in Bed, Lucian Freud's haunting portrait of Caroline.

Blackwood was an artist in her own right. Her literary talents were dark and satiric; her ten books of fiction and nonfiction betrayed an extraordinary eye for human physiognomy, attire, and behavior. Arguably her best book, Great Granny Webster described the comic terrors of her upbringing in Northern Ireland, and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. She herself died of cancer on Valentine's Day 1996, at the age of sixty-four.

Dangerous Muse is the first biography of Lady Caroline Blackwood. Drawing upon numerous interviews and unpublished letters from Blackwood's mother, Maureen Dufferin, and friends and family, including Andrew Harvey, Jonathan Raban, John Richardson, and Caroline's sister Perdita Blackwood, Nancy Schoenberger eloquently captures one of the most original and provocative figures in contemporary letters of the twentieth century.

Lady Caroline Blackwood (1931-1996), with her wealth, fame, brilliance, eccentricity, dysfunction and illness, is an ideal subject for an absorbingly juicy (albeit tragic) biography. Perhaps best known for marrying painter Lucian Freud, then Aaron Copland's prize student Israel Citkowitz, then patrician poet Robert Lowell, the mysterious Blackwood, with her enormous, unflinching eyes, was "one of the great beauties of her day"; she was also a writer in her own right. Schoenberger (Girl on a White Porch), former director of the Academy of American Poets, never met Blackwood (the day of their proposed meeting, Blackwood was hospitalized and died soon thereafter). The author traces this troubled, fascinating life from a childhood on a grand family estate in Northern Ireland, through her marriages to brilliant yet tortured and unstable men, and then through widowhood, when Blackwood inhabited a former funeral home in Sag Harbor, on New York's Long Island, reputedly haunted still by her dark presence. Blackwood inspired her husbands' brilliant works such as Freud's photograph Girl in Bed (it was clutched by Lowell when he died of a heart attack) and Lowell's The Dolphin, dedicated to Caroline. But Schoenberger calls her "both a muse and an anti-muse," for she also undermined their creativity with her alcoholism and cruel wit, provoking their worst qualities, like Freud's gambling and womanizing, Citkowitz's passivity and Lowell's bipolar illness and abusiveness. Alternately vibrant and pathetic, Blackwood alienated and insulted everyone around her. Schoenberger targets the general reader over the scholar particularly with her exploration of Blackwood's "curse" but those interested in literary biography, particularly in the lives of artists and the sources of their creativity, will find relevant material here. Lady Caroline Blackwood, who died in 1996, is best known in the United States for her turbulent marriage to poet Robert Lowell (the last of her three husbands). Born into the Anglo-Irish nobility in 1931, she was an heiress to the Guinness fortune and one of the most glamorous socialites of her day. Brilliant but moody, she first married the painter Lucian Freud, who commemorated her eerie beauty in several famous paintings. Although she had written sporadically throughout her life, it was not until after Lowell's death in 1977 that she began to concentrate on her haunting, often autobiographical fiction and nonfiction (e.g., Great Granny Webster, which was shortlisted for the Booker). Blackwood died before she and Schoenberger (creative writing, Coll. of William & Mary; Girl on a White Porch) could agree on this biography. The subsequent destruction of her papers, plus the refusal of Blackwood's children and family to contribute, has made this a rather thin study of a bewildering woman whose character is not entirely explained by hereditary eccentricity, alcoholism, and an unhappy life. Although this disorganized, badly edited biography is full of information about Lady Caroline's bloodlines and the derring-do of the glitterati, the subject herself is all but obscured by the attention lavished on her well-known spouses—an outcome that Blackwood would probably have both loathed and, with her taste for black comedy, found bleakly funny.

A paradoxical and beguiling figure,

Lady Caroline is extremely charming and repugnant at once, to this reader. Like another reviewer, I found the book to be impossible to put down, and I read almost straight through, until I was done. Beautiful, high-born, and slovenly, a constant smoker of cigarettes and a night-and-day-long consumer of vodka, Lady Caroline Blackwood nonetheless marries both a well known painter and America's leading poet of her time. She never stops attracting famous, wealthy men. Nancy Schoenberger peels off layer after layer to reveal both Lady Caroline and her aristocratic and wealthy set of friends and relations. I thought hard about those jet set and well born, many of them famous, friends of hers, as I read, and it occurred to me to think that they were blessed with money and talent and free time and fame, while the rest of us are even more blessed in that we have been given the work ethic, common sense, and bills to pay. The book inspires such thoughts and comparisons, whether or not they are on the money. I enjoyed it hugely.

Mediocre

There is a problem with this book, and it's the sort of problem always encountered with books of this type. That is, it's a biography of someone who's only famous because of the people they
married and/or bedded. The biographer is thus left with a dilemma; they have to convince us to care. In order to do this, they have to bring the person's character to life. This requires a novelist's talent, or a reasonable facsimile therein. It requires what David Cecil brought to Lady Caroline Lamb in "Young
Melbourne: a conviction that in spite of infuriating self-destructiveness, we understand the bond between them and the famous person, and why that person loved them. Nancy Schoenberger may have such talent; alas, it's not evident here. Lady Caroline Blackwood was rich, aristocratic, and beautiful. Okay, got that. Schoenberger also tries to convince us that Blackwood's a major writing talent, with very little success. Her work seems at all times slight, when it isn't cruel. She was also alcoholic from a very early age; a sloven; a depressive; a neglectful parent, and an unsuccessful wife. She was apparently also ambitious-she only married artists. There are odd gaps in the book, which seem to come from threatened lawsuits. Her children did not participate; Schoenberger says she understands why (and so do we) but the result leaves holes in the narrative. Two out of her three husbands are dead, and the other apparently didn't talk. So we don't know why they married her, and the book supplies few hints. Ms. Schoenberger maintains that Blackwood was an artist and a `muse.' Yes, but. From the
evidence here you could just as easily conclude that these not very wealthy arty types married her because she was rich as well as beautiful and they were crashing snobs. Ms. Schoenberger states she is `haunted' by Blackwood. Translation: she identifies rather too heavily with her subject. And we get, unfortunately, the smarmy romanticism typical of this type of `the-beautiful-and-the-damned' project. You need the talent of Fitzgerald to bring that off without gagging. What a book he would have made of this material! You get a clearer idea of Caroline Blackwood from her first husband's portrait of her than you do from this biography. That's the difference, I'm afraid, between genius and reportage. Put another way: a minor literary figure gets a minor-league biography.

Great, except for one area

I have to admit that when I first began reading this biography of Lady Caroline, it did not immediately enthrall me the way I thought it might, after having read the book's description. The first chapter or so deals almost exclusively with her family's history, and I found the endless names and descriptions of the different people boring. *However* as I began to read forward, I found myself fascinated with the sort of wit and charm Caroline Blackwood posessed (as is evident with her writings) The little excerpts from her fiction and non-fiction works scattered throughout the length of the biography were very important, as I think they fit perfectly with what Miss Schoenberger had been describing within Caroline's life. They provided a lot of insight into what was happening in her life, in an almost poetical manner. There is no doubt that the author has a strong talent for writing, but I think the fact that different members of Caroline Blackwood's family refused to contribute hurt Nancy Schoenberger's effort for a deeper story. All in all, by the end of the book, I definitely wanted more to read. The author's fluid style of writing fit the subject matter well and it wasn't repetitive or dull by any means. I was however, disappointed with one aspect of the novel, and that is why wasn't more written about the development as Lady Caroline as a writer? I've read a few of her books, and she is obviously extremely talented in the area of psychological prose...there was more emphasis put on Caroline Blackwood's relationships than what was really the most fascinating thing about her, and that was her ability to so vividly and acutely write a novel of the psychological aspect...that was her true genius, not the fact that she was beautiful and had famous husbands. Too bad that wasn't put across, and that that's what Caroline will be remembered for, instead of what she *should*. Nevertheless a great biography by Nancy Schoenberger, given what she had to work with.

A Powerful Tool In The Hands Of A Martial Student

Growing up under the shallow instruction of American martial arts had always left a gaping hole in my soul. The macho Chuck Norris style of external toughness didn't provide the spiritual guidance that completes oneself. Beyond the Known is a series of parables that uses subtle wisdom to lead the reader towards a greater self-awareness. Sage advice in the form of practical teachings opened my mind up to the world outside of the arts allowing me to accept and understand a more enlightened way to embrace my journey. This book is a powerful tool in the hands of a martial student, it can help a warrior become whole.

The best book on what it means to train martial arts, and to be a human.

5 stars isnt enough.

This is one of those rare books that you can read 1000 times and on the 1001st read you would still get more out of it.

This book can easily be used as a pocket companion throughout your entire life to help you in more ways than i have room to write in a little review.

Also, this book has really helped me to see more clearly as to what my purpose in life is.

I got this book a few years ago and didn't think much of it because I couldn't understand it. Now, after a few years of Tai Chi and meditation, I'm starting to understand it. A great book, indeed! I'm planning to read his next book.
