Newbie needing info

Having worked through some issues in therapy, only to hear that I have some slight Obsessive-Compulsive personality disorder traits, I set out to find a good book to teach me about what I've grown up thinking was "normal." This book gave GREAT insights into my brain and how I work. It has some great tips/tricks on how to break those vicious cycles that we all get into when trying to break a habit or addiction.

I've managed to either underline something on every page or put post-it reminders on various pages to remember to do something. If you're struggling with "why can't I just find 'that thing' that makes me finally get with the program!?", I'd recommend finding an online survey to see if you have a little OCPD...and then get this book.

We all know that there's no magic diet pill or magic potion that will instantly dissolve those unwanted pounds....so do something to change your 'mind' instead of buying that next supplement in hopes that it will finally do the trick.

Still unsure? Do what I did: Read the first couple of pages of this book and if that doesn't convince you - move on.

A great guide for the moderate stress eater

I found this book a tremendous resource, and still do. It's written from a technical perspective, quoting studies and providing case studies on disordered eating. Its message is that if you understand why you binge (ie, lose control) you can stop it. It's all related to stress eating, but for me, the message was that I absolutely had to have a beginning and an end to my meals...I'm a grazer. It made all the difference. I lost 40 lbs and I'm now "normal" weight.

Lots of info but no practical help

This is the second self help book I have invested in. The book tends to go a bit over the top on statistics but does manage to give advice and information on bulimia, anorexia and BED all at the same time. The author is obviously well read in such matters and the book is full of useful information. Useful if you don't already know why you or a relative have disordered eating. Sadly as with the last book I knew all the information already, the book added nothing and certainly hasn't guided me in overcoming my eating disorder. The author does acknowledge that sometimes a person will need some kind of one to one therapy to overcome the problem. Perhaps those with minor disorders will find a solution here and I'm sure it will help others understand why someone has an eating disorder and how they can help. Unfortunately the book has convinced me that self help books like this are not the answer and that professional help is required. Coping with an eating disorder, let alone trying to overcome it is difficult enough on your own, I don't recommend this book as the answer it professes, a little help maybe but thats about it.

About the Author
Janice Weaver has been working with books all her life – first as an editor, and now as a writer. Her first book, Building America, was named a Notable Book by the International Reading Association and also appeared on the New York Public Library’s 2002 Books for the Teenage List. Her second book, From Head to Toe, was published in the fall of 2003 to equal acclaim.

Francis Blake has been an illustrator for as long as he can remember, and his artwork appears in magazines, books, and advertising campaigns across North America, Europe, and the Far East. His original paintings and drawings are in private collections as far apart as Melbourne, Toronto, and Wigan. Really good stuff in here by Joe

Really good stuff in here by Joe. I found secret techniques for writing not taught in public high schools but in catholic private schools which impressed me. I think it is a good read for anyone that wants to improve their writing ability. I'm glad I Finally read it. I bought two copies of it. I also bought the hypnotic writing wizard which comes with the advanced hypnotic writing course which I delve into next. Five star. Get it.

Does he think customers are stupid?

I bought "Hypnotic Writing" and "The Irresistable Offer" at the same time and read them both.

The "Irresistable Offer" is brief, to the point (but still very complete), and states very clearly that one selling point in your ad copy should be that the customer is not stupid, he will square you in 3 seconds or less, he will see if there is any REAL value in what you have to offer, and many more things, in the blink of an eye. (the book gives you REAL MEANS to overcome these stumbling blocks)

Mr. Vitale, on the contrary seems that he wants to entertain his potential customers, and bribe them into thinking that what he sells (and sells, and sells) is extraordinary. He does that with redundant prose, beautiful prose, aesthetically speaking, BUT he shows his true colors from the headers down. Are you really thinking that by using an opening like "amazing breakthrough", like "the truth about..." is going to grab your potential customers' attention, and ABOVE ALL, their trust?
I think that by using Mr. Vitale's wording you are IMMEDIATELY revealing who you are: "I am a seller, I am trying to hypnotize you into buying my product, I don't really care to give you value, what I care is to impress you and make a sale." This is what Mr. Vitale's prose says when you read it.

He gives examples of "normal ad copy" that he translates into "hypnotic ad copy" and he probably expects that the reader will rave about his writing. Well, to me they are both downright awful. They both reveal that the main aim of the copy is not to deliver and communicate REAL VALUE, to offer credibility, to overcome the potential customer's objections by opposing a REAL deal, no, in his writings you "fascinate" the customers, and, in so doing, you sabotage yourself by revealing your real end.

He even adds two paragraphs written in Italian. Now, I am a native Italian, and Italian is my FIRST language. Let me tell you upfront that what Mr. Vitale says it is Italian IS NOT ITALIAN AT ALL. It is a computerized, awful, and totally illogical and incorrect translation of a decent Italian paragraph. He didn't even take the time to ask a translator to translate into REAL ITALIAN those two paragraphs (that he was going to include in a book), so to not offend the linguistics of such a noble language.

I would suggest that you purchase "The Irresistable Offer" by Mark Joyner, THAT is REAL marketing communication, honest, powerful, poignant.
brief but to the point, that is "ad copy" that will win the trust of your prospects immediately and give you a REAL edge over the competition.

Usefull, Creative, Inspiring

I picked up this book because I wanted some new ideas for a sales letter I was writing. I have experience as a writer and I've written sales letters/material before. However, I wanted to refuel my idea generator and that's what I got. Hypnotic Writing. It gave me exactly what I was looking for, a fresh way to look at my own style, my subject and my clients. I enjoyed the approach Mr. Vitale took in this book: short snippets (chapters) that generate ideas. I read the whole book and took 9 pages of notes in 3 hours. The notes that I compiled were easily turned into one of the best letters I have ever written. The feedback I have received has been very positive and the so far the sales-conversion on it has been in the low teens, (Not bad, in fact, I'm really happy with it)

Joe Vitale simply uses the Hypnosis metaphor along with actual hypnotic techniques to get his point across. I have read other reviewers that seem really dissatisfied with that issue, I am not sure why. I have also read other reviews that thought the book could have been condensed and I agree, to a point. There was some fluff, but no worse than 99% of other books. Yes, Joe Vitale writes about his own work and references customers and projects he has worked on. This is a notoriously bad trait most information/direct marketers do. On the other hand, as writers; aren't we supposed to write about what we know best? That would be ourselves, I hope.

Pound for pound, this book did exactly what I wanted it to do and I got great results from it. When compared to other direct marketing books, the issue I appreciate most is that it is self contained. What I mean is, it isn't a sales letter disguised as a book. My pet peeve is reading a book only to find out that you have to buy other services from the authors to accomplish your goals. Sure, Vitale self-promotes, but this book is a means to an end in it self, you don't have to buy anything else from him to accomplish your writing goals.

This book produces great ideas and it does it quickly. I would give it five stars if it had a little less filler.

Charming, fascinating Q&A book for Disney lovers

I learned about this book through the Disney Parks Blog and I knew I had to order it. I am reading it like a novel as the book is divided into categories, almost like chapters, and then in each category are questions from fellow Disney fans and the answers from founder and chief Disney Archivist Dave Smith. Dave has been doing his job for over 40 years and clearly has acccess to a wealth of Disney information.

As mentioned the book is broken down into subcategories such as "Disneyland" featuring questions about Disneyland and "Walt Disney" featuring questions about the legend himself just to name a few. I found the section on Disney shorts to be absolutely fascinating as I was unfamiliar with a lot of the things discussed. For example, did you know there are 75 Silly Symphonies? Other things learned: Do you know when Mickey's birthday is? Do you know what kind of dog Goofy is supposed to be? Do you know why Goofy talks and Pluto does not?

Those are just an itty bitty fraction of the questions asked by readers in this book. Even if you are a huge Disney fan and know many, many obscure facts, I am very certain you will come away after reading this with several new tidbits of knowledge to impress your Disney friends.

Dave Smith put together a wonderful book of exciting and interesting information. I highly, highly, highly recommend this book if you love Disney as much as I do. Excellent read!

Disney Trivia book is far from Trivial

I was intrigued by this book, having studied Disney in all its many facets, since 1972. The price seemed right, and I was eager to find out what I didn't know yet. I have spent hours reading and rereading this book. There were times when I wished the author had gone into more detail with his answers. But I still regard it as being a valuable and entertaining source of Disney information.

I bought this book anticipating our upcoming trip to Disney World. I would recommend this to any trivia fans who are visiting the parks. Well written and an easy fun read for the family.

Great continuation from the last book in this series (Midnight Special #12 by Phoef Sutton)...
The usual elements are present, Plus Ms. Faust does an Excellent job of incorporating some new & interesting ideas, like Matt seriously wondering Who or What he really is...
Excellent action & fast-paced writing keeps this episode moving forward, and we even find out a little more about Mr. Dark and some of the things he's capable of (I particularly was glad to read these things, as for awhile in this series we had learned very little about the elusive Mr. Dark...).
I hope the next installment we be up to the high water mark set by Sutton & Faust's treatment of The Dead Man!

The latest adventure in Lee Goldberg and William Rabkin's exciting cliff-hanger horror /thriller serial, The Dead Man, is another beaut.

The hero of the series is Matthew Cahill, an ordinary man who was buried alive after an avalanche and is miraculously brought back to life with a terrifying supernatural gift. He travels across America trying to find an answer to his miraculous rebirth and confronting the evil created by the mysterious Mr Dark.

As well as the creators, The Dead Man series has had some great stories from the likes of Harry Shannon and James Reasoner.

The inimitable Christa Faust takes the reins with The Death Match, as Cahill investigates the strange death of a dock worker and ends up involved in the murky world of underground female cage fighting.

Smashing two-fisted, hard-hitting, pulp action.

Un cuento para conocedores. Buenísimo!!!

¡Carlos Cuauhtemoc se atrevió a hacer algo muy arriesgado con este librito!: UN RELATO SIN SIGNOS DE PUNTUACIÓN, al estilo de los mejores de José Saramago y Arturo Perez Reverte. Cuando lo estaba leyendo, no lo podía creer. Me dije: "Muchos de los lectores de CCS no van a entender este trabajo". Creanme. Es interesante, fino, y diferente. Como si un cineasta que nos tiene acostumbrados a los efectos especiales decidiera hacer una pelícla muda o en blanco y negro. La gente superficial dirá: "¡Que mala estuvo, en blanco y negro!", pero los conocedores descrubrirán la verdadera capacidad artística del productor. Recomiendo ampliamente este librito, pero no a todos; solo a los que quieran leer algo raro y breve, además a mí en lo personal me hizo pensar mucho sobre el tema del dolor y las tragedias.

Es una obra compleja y de exquisita lectura.
La historia impactante y con un mensaje valioso para enfrentar la crisis con acciones concretas y determinación. Es una novela corta, concisa pero muy buena.
Me sorprendió Carlos Cuauhtémoc Sánchez, se atrevió a realizar algo distinto al estilo que normalmente le conocemos; una novela-cuento que cualquier autor sabe que no es fácil de conseguir, él lo realizó a la altura de los más grandes.
Muy satisfecho con su lectura.

Hola,
He comprado todos los libros de Carlos C.S. y puedo decir que la mayoria de ellos poseen una calificacion arriba del promedio, sin embargo El Virus, pareciera que no fue escrito por Carlos C.S. la verdad la calidad literaria no es la que estamos acostumbrados, la narrativa es muy pobre como si hubiera sido escrito a la carrera o solo por cumplir con los plazos, es una version de bolsillo (tamano) y de muy pocas paginas, no presenta ningun concepto nuevo, comparado con otras obras de el, El Virus es de muy mala calidad, NO LO RECOMIENTO.

SACRIFICE is a straight-up thrill ride. Fast-paced writing with unexpected twists left me on the edge of my seat through-out much of the book. I actually found myself comparing Russell James style to Stephen King in several places ... With the boys, he has created a core group of protagonists that we can't help but cheer for, the quintessential underdogs.

satisfying on so many levels

I had never been one for chick-lit or even mainstream novels because I can't stand sentimentality. This is a quirky personality trait of mine that makes me love hard science-fiction and horror, categories that are traditionally considered "manly fiction".

Russell James's new novel "Sacrifice" really delivers on the "manly fiction" part, but he also manages to elevate it beyond just a slash/gore tome. His brilliant and deft writing imbues his characters with personalities that make you love them, even Bob who is in most ways a classic failure, and root for them.

James takes an unlikely group of high school buddies on a horrific adventure that tests their inner strength and bonds of friendship. Without giving too much away, I want to say that he was highly successful in showing the dissolution of friendship that is at once understandable and bittersweet. He also shows that a bunch of teen goofballs could be called on to do what's good for the whole over the good of the one or the few.

While one part of the ending was what I had expected to happen, James delighted me with a climax and resolution that surprised me and made me teary-eyed without degenerating into sentimentality. The last chapter, in particular, gave me tremendous satisfaction in a way that I rarely experienced in all the books I've read. You know the clichéd scene of a girl clutching a romance novel to her bosom with a satisfied sigh at the end? That was pretty much me when I was done with the last chapter (subbing in my iPhone Kindle App for a physical book).

As good as his first novel was, Russell James has gotten even better with this second work. I can't wait to see what's in store for us with his third book.

Side note: as I mentioned, I read the Kindle edition of this book, and there are some places where words are in red instead of black. While this was a bit distracting, once I figured out that the author or publisher wasn't trying to send the reader some secret message via differently colored words, the red lettering didn't detract from the story as a whole.

A Filled-with Horrors Coming of Age Tale

Sacrifice is, at its heart, a coming of age tale, filled with laughs, tears and plenty of creepy and frightening moments. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Left me a little sad to be honest, but it was real to life. Lots of scares and great characters in this one. Deals with teens in the 1980's and the present as they return to their small Long Island town to deal with issues (including a wicked ghost) from their past. FEAR the Woodsman!!!! Highly Recommended!!!!

Downright Terrifying

The complex plot of ghost hunting, betrayal, and loss pulled me into the frightening novel of horror and suspense.

Even though the Woodsman's creepiness permeates the story, there is so much beyond the supernatural element in this novel. Russell brilliantly develops the Dirty Half Dozen and realistically shows how one graduation prank alters their lives forever. Thirty years later, the reunion of the Dirty Half Dozen rips open healed wounds, especially when the group must face the Woodsman again. Effectively integrating the present with the past, the author passionately explores the personal sacrifices these characters have made ever since that night at the water tower.

The perfect balance of character growth and downright terrifying encounters with the Woodsman, Sacrifice is an entertaining novel with a pulse-pounding climax that will leave you emotionally spent and heartbroken.
