About the Author
John Jakes (b. 1932), the author of more than a dozen novels, is regarded as one of today’s most distinguished writers of historical fiction. His work includes the highly acclaimed Kent Family Chronicles series and the North and South Trilogy. Jakes’s commitment to historical accuracy and evocative storytelling earned him the title of “the godfather of historical novelists” from the Los Angeles Times and led to a streak of sixteen consecutive New York Times bestsellers. Jakes has received several awards for his work and is a member of the Authors Guild and the PEN American Center. He and his wife, Rachel, live on the west coast of Florida.

A Good Historical Novel!

This was certainly a book that you could enjoy. This book also gave you a good picture of the history of California. This book chronicles the rise from poverty to massive riches for a young man from Pennylsvania. He first grows immensely wealthy by taking part in the oil industry of California. From making big money in petroleum he moves into the citrus industry. He is able to continue making money in the citrus business. His next step is in water rights. This novel also tells of some of his lady loves that he becomes familiar with. Also interesting is some of the potent enemies that he gets in the state of California. This is a good depiction of wealth and power gained in the Golden State. If you read this book you will read a good story as well as get a good history of the state of California. It is also very unique the way that John Jakes uses some historical figures from these days in this story. Read this book,you will not be dissapointed.

California Gold has it all! Lust, greed, amition, and historical tie-ins all in one! I have read and re-read this wonderful work of fiction 6 times at last count. I never become bored with it. In fact, some of the book's fabulous historical references have even lead me on some great adventures as a tourist in both San Francisco and the Los Angeles area.

A great read

I thoroughly enjoyed this exceptional novel by John Jakes. Previously I had read only the Bicentennial Series-Kent Family Chronicals, which I loved. I liked California Gold because, being from California, I loved the rich historic information. It was more than 49's and/or movie stars. I loved reading about Hearst and Bierce, and the fact that the story ends in my neck of the woods, Riverside. The California orange-growing business is under-rated. This novel incompassed virtually every aspect of history and life in California, and that is saying quite a lot!

About the Author
James A. Bellanca is the founder and CEO of International Renewal Institute, Inc. He is known for his cutting-edge program design and implementation of research-rich, standards-aligned professional learning programs for educators. He has worked with educational leaders in Chicago, Los Angeles, Cleveland, New York, New Jersey, and Michigan, and also with school districts to design programs that promote critical thinking and collaboration to increase academic performance among all children, including high-risk student populations.

Robin J. Fogarty is president of the Chicago-based, minority-owned educational publishing and consulting firm RFA: A Robin Fogarty Company. She has taught in classrooms from kindergarten level through college and served as an administrator. She is the author or coauthor of more than 10 books, including From Staff Room to Classroom: A Guide for Planning and Coaching Professional Development (with Brian M. Pete), which won a 2006 National Staff Development Council book award. She is a contributor to 21st Century Skills: Rethinking How Students Learn and has written articles for Educational Leadership, Phi Delta Kappan, and the Journal of Staff Development.

She earned a doctorate in curriculum and human resource development from Loyola University Chicago, a master's in instructional strategies from National-Louis University, and a bachelor's in early childhood education from the State University of New York at Potsdam. She is married to Brian Pete.

Brian M. Pete is cofounder of RFA: A Robin Fogarty Company. He is a skilled presenter on a variety of educational and leadership topics. He helps teachers transfer knowledge gained in the staff room into immediate and relevant classroom strategies. His educational videos include Best Practices: Classroom Management and Best Practices: Active Learning Classrooms. Brian is also the author of numerous resources. He coauthored From Staff Room to Classroom: A Guide for Planning and Coaching Professional Development (with Robin Fogarty), which won a 2006 National Staff Development Council book award. Great Resource Tool

Even though I can not create full lessons from these suggestions, I love this book because I decided the information was very practical and helpful. Each unit focuses on a different skill set, within the chapter there is an explanation of it's use and at least 3-different levels of techniques to use to incorporate these skills in your lesson plan. For example, there is a prior knowledge building activity, during activity, and post-activity. I use the prior knowledge activity for my extra lesson, or add-on mini-lesson in case my students complete their work early and we have only a few minutes left for class. In the future, I plan to use their prior knowledge activities for my skill introductions during the beginning of a unit. Definitely a great resource tool for teachers

Easy to use reference loaded with strategies for implemntation

I like how this book is organized. It makes it simple to quickly locate what you would like to implement and then quickly find strategies to use in the implementation. It is also a quick read and overall a good resource. If you check out the table of contents here on Amazon it will show you the thinking skills discussed and in each chapter it is filled with ideas to use in your classroom. Worth the purchase price.

En el mes de mayo de l994, con un pequeño grupo de familias de distintos trasfondos latinos comenzaron una congregación hispana en la ciudad de Miami. Orville continúa viajando ampliamente para ministrar en distintos lugares, y también colabora en varios proyectos de la literatura cristiana. Es miembro del consejo pastoral de Editorial Vida.

This quite amazing book covers practically everything there is to know about magnetism. Ten seconds after opening the book, having scanned the contents section, I knew I was going to read not only about the birth of magnetism as a branch of scientific study, but also about Maxwells equations, relativity, quantum magnetism and technology. Two pages into the book, and I knew that the book was written in a relaxed, engaging, easy-to-follow style, which the author maintains throughout. a broad account, with care taken to explain the theory

This slim volume delivers everything that the VSI concept promises. The text is relaxed and good-humoured, reviewing early historical views, perhaps `beliefs' is more accurate, about magnetism. The author describes applications of magnetism, including sound recording and data storage, and surveys future possibilities. He outlines the role of magnetism in the solar system and the universe at large, and pays particular attention to the solar wind and magnetic fields of planets.

The main body of the text explains research into magnetism as the scientific method was applied, going on to reveal the quantum physical basis of magnetism. The theoretical and historical diversions are appropriate and inserted helpfully. The author, Professor Stephen Blundell, is to be commended for keeping these explanations lucid and accessible. His disinclination to introduce formulae is a bit tedious, no doubt in response to an editorial rider applied by Oxford Uni Press. This very minor concern is compensated by a useful further reading list which, in 2012, is current.

This VSI has inclined me to read the related VSIs on relativity, superconductivity and quantum theory, topics on which I am reasonably familiar but which I expect, from my experience with this book, will also be well summarised in this series.

Nice simple introduction to magnetism, kindle book ok except for equations

This is a quick read, and is nicely written. I especially appreciated the intuitive explanations. This is a technical book, but doesn't have too many equations. Most people with just a little physics background should be able to follow it.

The kindle version is good quality except that the few equations in the book are so tiny they are almost unreadable. Don't know why amazon consistently puts out tech books with unreadable equations.

Just the right level . . .

I'm a high school science teacher, and I downloaded this book to learn more for teaching magnetism, both at the novice and the advanced level. It's all here! I was able to pick up some ideas for explaining things to my 9th grade physical science students, while the section on the quantum mechanical basis for ferromagnetism was also perfect for AP Physics students. The book avoided math, but it still did a terrific job of explaining most aspects of magnetism for a broad audience. A great value.

Turmoil is raging within Colonial India's borders as many view their British occupation negatively, holding protest rallies. Nonviolence, one of Vidya's father's principles, motivates him to secretly attend to the injured and beaten protestors. The teen's idyllic life changes in an instant when he is beaten by the British police and suffers extensive brain damage. Unable to earn a living and lead a productive life, this highly respected man and his family move in with his relatives. Vidya's dreams are shattered as her father's stature is immediately lowered to that of "an idiot" and she is forced to withstand her aunt's sharp-tongued, abusive taunts. Vidya's bright, bold, independent character remains determined to achieve her goals with the help and support of her grandfather, who first allows her access to his private library and later agrees to her formal university education. When Vidya finds time after chores and schoolwork, she escapes upstairs to her grandfather’s library, where she meets a young man who seems to understand her. In her first novel, Venkatraman paints an intricate and convincing backdrop of a conservative Brahmin home in a time of change. Vidya’s first-person narrative conveys her pain, guilt, and hopes, as well as the strong sense of self that enables her to act with courage and occasionally with nobility in difficult circumstances. In an author’s note, Venkatraman comments on several elements of the novel, including Gandhi’s nonviolent revolution, Indian volunteers in the British army during World War II, and her family history. STRUGGLE TOWARD FREEDOM

Have you ever wondered how it might feel to have your marriage arranged for you by your parents and relatives? Have you ever imagined permanently living under the same roof as your extended family? Have you ever known the desperation of living without rights or a voice of your own? If so, Padma Venkatraman's "Climbing the Stairs" is the book for you.

This book gives readers a glimpse into what it means to live in a traditional Indian joint family and of the restrictions imposed on people due to social and cultural norms. It speaks to the searing pain of oppression and the struggle for independence, both national and personal. Vidya, the protagonist of this story, is a curious girl who tries to make sense of the changing world in which she finds herself. India is in the midst of its freedom struggle against British rule and there are strong opinions on how this must be attained. Vidya grapples with the question of "means and ends" and "love and loyalty," while trying to remain true to her still formulating beliefs. Despite circumstances that unalterably change the course of Vidya's life, this courageous spitfire of a girl navigates her circumstances to uncompromisingly reach for her goals. Venkatraman's "Climbing the Stairs" is a fast paced book full of memorable characters, a strong story line, and a satisfying conclusion. I highly recommend readers accompany Vidya on her journey; they will be changed just as she is.

An important part of India's history comes to life

Climbing the Stairs by Padma Venkatraman is a YA historical fiction about a fifteen-year-old girl named Vidya that takes place in India during the struggle for Indian independence and WWII. Outspoken and willful Vidya is excited about her future, but when her father is injured in a freedom rally, Vidya's hopes of entering college are shattered when her family is forced to move in with her grandfather and his straight-laced, traditional household. Her only way to escape is to climb the stairs to her grandfather's library where she is forbidden to go.

Vidya is a delightful protagonist, but at first she seems a little naïve and immature for her age. For example, in a strange scene in the first chapter, she is unable to identify a stain on her father's shirt as blood, despite the fact that she is fifteen years old and the daughter of a physician. However, after witnessing a British officer brutally beat her father, she becomes a much more believable character as she struggles with guilt about her role in her father's injury and shame about her father's resulting brain damage. I also thought that a few of the interactions Vidya has with her love interest, Raman, are sometimes very awkward and her uncle's family comes across as a little too mean to be realistic.

Despite these shortcomings, I would highly recommend this novel to anyone who is interested in in Indian history. The setting and time-period covered by this book are not often covered in American literature and especially not in such a truthful, open way. Sometimes I find that Indian-American authors tend to romanticize India and their novels read as odes to a perfect country where problems such as caste-based discrimination and sexism don't seem to exist. However, through Vidya's eyes, the author unflinchingly shows us her view of what it was like to live in a male-dominated society and where oppression was a fact of life. We see shocking events and difficult social problems portrayed honestly, and this important time in India's history comes to life in a believable and interesting way.

a multi-faceted book for all ages

CLIMBING THE STAIRS is a wonderful, well written, and thought provoking book that navigates the historical and political context of India during WWII, commenting and using it as a backdrop without letting it overwhelm the story. There are so many threads beautifully woven together. The book also shows the devastating consequences of pride, something modern teens don't think about too much. The ending was so satisfying, as well, the way Vidya learns and grows.

Definetly the Best Forgotten Realms book I've read...

This book is great, the character development is very realsistic in my opinion. Contrary to another review, I would say that the Knights of Helm vs Native Mazticans conflict is nail-biting. It does not represent the Invaders as any more "Civilised" than those they attack. They are described as having a "washed out" appearance, "strange, sprouting" facial hair and also carrying a rank odour. In the way that events are told, I myself interpreted the book as saying that the conflict was unfortunate, and more the fault of the evil worshippers of the Maztican War God. Another brilliant factor would have to be a secret conspiracy element which definetly does not rip of history.
This is by far the most well-developed Forgotten Realms book I have ever read, although some humour wouldn't have gone amiss.

The historical aspect is a rip-off. Names are changed, but the premise is totally unoriginal. Also, I felt betrayed when the characters who started out as 'cool' turned out to be crazy, violent individuals who suddenly didn't make sense in the story or world such as a Dwarf who didn't have a problem with his army slaughtering children. The general who we're supposed to hope succeeds leads an army of child/women killers. And, the whole trilogy seems to say the evil guys are OK because they're the 'civilized' ones. There are plenty of better Forgotten Realms novels out there. Save yourself some time and skip this series.

I found Ironhelm to be a book that was extermely hard to put down. Right from the start it immerses you in action and adventure. The main plot was easy to guess, as this novel seemed to be based on the Spanish invasion of Mexico. Historical boredom is spared, however, with the lively infusion of magic and fantasy. Although true to the Forgotten Realms setting, it adds a new and original continent. My only complaint is the brief details in some parts of this book. This lack, however, keeps the book fast paced.

Waking Up

Putting these teachings into practice as inept and awkward as I am, led to an awakening that felt like I was just waking up to my real life here on earth. Noticing my speech, body and mind In conjunction with noticing and appreciating nature, is very powerful. I have to continually retread and attempt practice. Each Tim brings greater understanding. This book is a first step into a new world for me.

A word to the wise when using the enclosed CD as a support in practice: there is very little time allowed to fully experience the Stillness, Silence and Spaceousness into which the listener is being guided by Rinpoche's words. If you use it this way, a "pause" function on your CD player is highly recommended!

- through the silence of speak: when the complaining mindset has chosen us, we can be grateful for this opportunity to take refuge in silence;
- through the spaciousness of the mind: when our mind feels overwhelmed, we can be grateful for this opportunity to give ourselves the space we already are.
