About the Author
Dave Kraft served with the Navigators for thirty-eight years before joining Mars Hill Church in Seattle. As leadership development pastor at Mars Hill, Kraft recruits, trains, and places leaders for the church’s seven campuses. His first book, Leaders Who Last, was published in 2010. He and his wife, Susan, have been married for forty years and have four adult children and four grandchildren.

A Flawed but Potentially Helpful Book for Pastors

Dave Kraft formats this book on leadership to look at some of the mistakes leaders in churches make. Approaching the topic of leadership by highlighting mistakes leaders make provides a new angle on leadership that is helpful. They include "Allowing Ministry to Replace Jesus," Comparing to Others, Pride, People Pleasing, Busyness, Financial Frugality v. Steps of Faith, Avoiding Conflict, Focusing on the Hurting instead of the Hungry People, Teaching rather than Transforming, and Being Controlling. All of these are helpful for leaders to consider and to use to evaluate themselves.
Kraft intertwines his teachings with a hypothetical mega-church model from which he draws out fictional characters with leadership issues. For example, there is Norm, the CEO driver and leader of CCC church who is all business and becomes caught up in ministry success to the detriment of relationships with Jesus and others. There is the youth leader Bryan who has amazing success in numbers and popularity along with huge pride. Kraft provides counsel in light of these types of leadership dilemmas.
I found some helpful insights about leadership here, especially the danger of pride and allowing ministry focus to overshadow focus on Jesus and hearing from God. Conversely, I also found the usual problems when applying corporate types of leadership models to pastoring the Body of Christ. Although authors like Kraft decry applying the success-by-numbers model to church leadership, they continually use that as a measure of success. In his hypothetical church and as he discusses success, Kraft uses numbers as the measuring rod. The hypothetical pastor Norm is esteemed and lauded because of numbers and invited to an exclusive retreat because he is a pastor of a large church of over 1,000 people. His solution to stress is to take a 6-month paid hiatus to develop his own marriage and spiritual relationship -- something outside the realm of possibilities for most pastors. Kraft implies subtlely that if you have not acheived this then you have not been successful according to his standards. When the majority of churches in Kraft's target audience -- North America -- have less than 100 congregants what is he saying to those pastors when he is clearly upholding the mega-church pastor as the model for success? Kraft encourages measurements of success and goal-setting but offers no standard other than numbers growth. Is that all there is to church leadership?
Additionally, Kraft borrows Jim Collins' teachings about "Getting the Right People on the Bus" as the key to leadership. So Kraft counsels leaders to carefully select the right people with the right character, God-given developed talents and gifts, drive, hunger, etc to place in positions. That works great when you have a pool of thousands of people from which to "hire" for jobs in the church, but what about a small church that has a small pool of potential volunteer ministers who all have inadequacies but are also all the small church pastor has to work with? This is typical of how Kraft does not address the small church pastor at all in this book. He is speaking to church leaders with mega-resources. Although readers like myself who are pastors of small churches can infer lessons, I think we also find it frustrating to see the contradictions and oversights in the author's writing.
I also found the tension in Kraft's writing between visionary leadership and pastoring the flock in the present to be troubling. In Kraft's view, the leader has no time to dwell on present ministry needs; he must be all about the future and growth. I see this as being in contradiction to God's call to pastors to shepherd the flock he gives them and to be in the Present with people God has placed in his or her ministry. Again I think Kraft is writing exclusively to the CEO pastor of a Mega-church who merely runs the show from a distance. I do not see this leadership as the Biblical model of pastoring but the American CEO model. Does it work to grow churches numerically? Yes. Is it what most pastors are called to do in God's Kingdom? I don't think so. Kraft writes that "Biblical leadership is concerned with the future while management is concerned with the present. Our God is a God of the future." I think God is a God of the past, present and future, and that the Bible does not lead us to neglect the present pursuing the future. Leaders can easily miss the blessing and ministry in the present by being future focused. It also minimizes the value of those who provide pastoral care to people facing intense needs presently, as if the dying person, the hurting parents, or the sick or needy are not as important as developing the next phase of the parking lot expansion.
In a book on Mistakes Leaders Make, it is imperative that the author does not make sophomoric mistakes like misquote a famous leadership expert. In the initial pages of the book, Kraft misquotes John Maxwell as saying "If you need people, you can lead people." (page22) The correct quote is "If you need people, you CAN'T lead people." On the next page Kraft misquotes a Navigators symbol replacing the fourth spoke of the wheel of Christian obedience that should be "The Word" with "The World." (page 23) I don't think "The World" has ever been included in Christian obedience. Mistakes leaders make: failing to proofread!
Kraft also exacerbates what is already a problem for Christian leaders who are always wondering things like "What are the best uses of my time?" and "What are my main responsibilities?" On one hand Kraft writes, "A leader's primary responsibility is to hear from God." (page 65) Then, on the other hand he writes, "The primary responsibility of a leader is to develop additional leaders." (page 89) This is a blatant error and creates a double-bind for readers who are probably already stressed with trying to be the best they can be. For me, this type of error in a book targeting mistakes leaders make disqualifies it from recommendation. It also points out another mistake leaders make which is trying to do too many things at once and not producing quality workmanship.
Kraft is definitely resourceful and experienced in ministry leadership and coaching. I think this book was rushed and perhaps takes for granted a market share that allows the author to neglect quality of depth and breadth.
