About the Author

David Allan is a Distinguished Engineer at Ericsson and a former Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Nortel. He is the holder of some thirty patents in telecommunications, including several for the co-invention of technology fundamental to 802.1aq and 802.1Qay. In addition, he co-chairs the End-to-End Architecture Committee of the Broadband Forum, which recently honored him as a Distinguished Fellow.

Nigel Bragg has spent twenty years in the telecommunications industry, thirteen of them with Nortel—where he was elected a Nortel Fellow in 2008—before joining Ciena where he works on packet transport and Carrier Ethernet technologies. He holds over thirty patents and is a co-inventor of PBT and PLSB, the pre-standard predecessors of PBB-TE and SPBM.

Thin book, rich content

This book explains what SPB is, why it matters, and how it fits, both into operators' networks and into the other 802.1 standards. And that's just on the first two pages of the introduction. Extremely well-written, but extremely dense, this thin book is not for the beginner. If you already understand Ethernet and IP routing reasonably well, and are prepared to put in the work necessary to connect the dots, this book is highly to be recommended.

About the Author
In the early 1980s, the lure of travel drew Bruce Whipperman away from a 20-year career of teaching physics. The occasion was a trip to Kenya, which included a total solar eclipse and a safari. He hasn't stopped traveling since.

With his family grown, he has been free to let the world's wild, beautiful corners draw him onward: the ice-clawed Karakoram, the Gobi Desert's trellised oases, Rajasthan's pink palaces, Japan's green wine country, Bali's emerald terraces, and Oaxaca's vibrant marketplaces.

Bruce has always pursued his travel career for the fun of it. He started with slide shows and photo gifts for friends. Others wanted his photos, so he began selling them. Once, stranded in Ethiopia, he began to write. A dozen years later, after scores of magazine and newspaper feature stories, Moon Pacific Mexico became his first book, and Moon Handbooks to Oaxaca, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, and Ixtapa & Zihuatanejo followed.

About the Author
Mark P. Zanna is a retired University Professor and former Chair of Psychology at the University of Waterloo. He received his BA (‘66) and PhD (‘70) from Yale University.
Professor Zanna’s area of research is the psychology of attitudes. Primarily funded over the years by grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, he has studied attitude structure and function, attitude formation and change, communication and persuasion (including the persistence of persuasion), and the attitude-behaviour relation. He has also conducted research on (a) overcoming resistance to persuasion, including research on subliminal priming and persuasion, self-affirmation and persuasion, and narrative persuasion, and (b) implicit attitudes (i.e., relatively automatic, intuitive evaluations), including research on aversive racists (i.e., those individuals who test low on thoughtful, conscious measures of prejudice, but high on more automatic, intuitive measures of prejudice) and defensive self-esteem (i.e., those individuals who test high on thoughtful, conscious measures of self-esteem, but low on more automatic, intuitive measures of self-esteem). In the domain of health promotion, he has evaluated a ‘safer sex’ intervention and tested the subtle effects (e.g., on implicit norms) of movie stars’ smoking in feature films. Currently, he is investigating the causes and consequences of negative implicit norms toward females in STEM disciplines.
A winner of several career awards for distinguished scientific contribution (D. O. Hebb Award, Canadian Psychological Association, 1993; D. T. Campbell Award, Society of Personality and Social Psychology, 1997; Fellow, Royal Society of Canada, 1999; Inaugural Excellence in Research Award, UW, 2000; Inaugural Distinguished University Professor, UW, 2004; Inaugural Excellence in Graduate Supervision, UW, 2005; Distinguished Scientist Award, Society of Experimental Social Psychology, 2007; K. Currently, he co-edits the Ontario Symposium on Personality and Social Psychology (since 1981) and the Advances in Experimental Social Psychology (since 1991), the two major edited book series in social psychology. He has also been elected to the presidencies of the two major learned societies in social psychology, the Society of Experimental Social Psychology (1985) and the Society of Personality and Social Psychology (1997). 32 (of 34) of Professor Zanna’s doctoral or postdoctoral students have taken academic positions. Six students chaired their respective departments (plus one was the President of a small US college) and 12 others became editors (or consulting editors) of major journals in the field. According to the Web of Science, Professor Zanna’s lifetime citations now (February, 2014) exceed 9,500 (h = 50; H = 55). According to Google Scholar, lifetime citations now (February, 2014) exceed 21,200 (h = 74). Finally, Professor Zanna has ranked 12th and 20th worldwide in citations in social psychology textbooks and social psychology handbooks, respectively.

Dr. James Olson obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Waterloo and has been a faculty member at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada, since 1978. He served as Chair of the Psychology Department from 1998 to 2003. He has conducted research on many topics, including attitudes, justice, social cognition, and humor. He has published more than 100 articles and chapters and has co-edited 15 books. He is a co-organizer of the Ontario Symposium on Personality and Social Psychology, a well-known series of conferences on various topics in personality and social psychology. He has served as an Associate Editor of three scientific journals, including the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology from 1995 to 1998. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology.

Packs a Powerful, Spiritual Punch!

It may sound plain, maybe it makes me sound simple minded in my faith, but I had never put together the connection between patience and trust in God until reading this book. And patience, my friends, is what longsuffering is about.

That alone was one of the greatest lessons I learned from reading this book, but there really is so much more to it! Once again, Lara takes the Word and digs deeper, looking at definitions and putting it all into the perspective of our every day lives. She asks us to consider how we live, the trials we face, and what God may be really doing. We want so much, but we have to learn to trust in God - and that requires us to to be patient.

Sometimes it really does seem like life is out to get us. I've been there and I'm sure you have too. Sometimes we wonder if God is really paying attention. Sometimes we just feel like giving up. This series of books - and really this third book specifically - really tackles these feelings. For me, this book really made me want to strive more to trust God in every aspect of my life. It made me want to give Him the control and just wait on Him to do what He wills to do. That, dear readers, is priceless!

Enduring to serve the Lord.

Just one block in the wall of protection that is quite often prayed for. This being a wall Satan cannot penetrate. This being the wall that should be being built upon each and every second that humanity exist. Yet, especially. in this country, we seem to have a appetite for tearing the wall down. It is imperative that followed of Jesus Christ stand fast and continue the work of the Lord. Nehemiah rebuilt the walls by being obedient to God, working hard around the clock not just on Sunday morning and evening and Wednesday night and by being on guard against the enemy known as evil led by Satan.

I have loved all of the Fruit of the Spirit books. They are short and to the point - also inexpensive. I feel that I have benefited much from reading these books and having a better understanding of the Holy Spirits fruits.

After the disaster that ended Karavans (2006), pregnant Audrun, Davyn, and their four children have left their conquered homeland and joined a karavan to seek out a new home. But Alisanos, the deepwood, a sentient, mobile forest, is on the move. Home to many dangerous creatures, Alisanos actually takes humans, who thereafter are either never seen again or transformed into hideous monsters. The deepwood attacks the karavan, but Audrun and her children fall in with Rhuan, one of the guides. She gives birth in the forest four months early, yet the baby appears to have been carried full term. The forest wants the child, and Audrun must protect and provide for all five children while trying to escape and reunite with her husband, who is frantically searching for them. Meanwhile, Alisanos' nonhuman inhabitants are fighting internecine battles. Rhuan is in the middle of one, and willy-nilly, Audrun is drawn in, too. I gave the book 4 stars instead of three because while I still enjoyed the story and the last two pages made my evening, in all honesty the book is unsatisfying. Most of it feels just like a gigantic explanation of the Karavan world, that is useful but would be better explained through action than constant lecture. The amount of storyline progressed is limited and unfortunately Deepwood suffers the same timeline/distance inconsistencies as the first novel (I am of the firm opinion that as a reader I shouldn't be jarred out of reading because one character's week is the same as another's day).

Overall solid, but if you can wait until the third book is released, I'd recommend that.

The "Who Cares?" factor

As a 40-something male, I am clearly not in the target demographic for Jennifer Roberson's DEEPWOOD. In contrast to other reviewers, I found DEEPWOOD even slower and even more disappointing than KARAVANS. Readers who just want to know what happens after the end of KARAVANS should consider a quick skim in the bookstore.

Those who read KARAVANS will recall that Audrun and her characterless children have become trapped in wondrous, dangerous Alisanos. What happens? They run around panicking, they say and do stupid things, and they get knocked around a bit. What do we learn about Alisanos beyond what we already knew in the first few pages of KARAVANS? We learn a little about its gods, we learn that it has dryads and dragons, and that's about it. (I don't want to knock the gods' part too much--that's one of the more interesting bits of the novel.)

Ilona, the most appealing character in KARAVANS, gets relatively scant attention in DEEPWOOD. I think that's a mistake. She comes back into the story at the end in a big way, but that doesn't make up for her limited role early on. Rhuan, the demigod who likes humans, gets plenty of play, but there's little character development; in fact, his strong-but-sensitive guy act becomes even more generic here. Brodhi, Rhuan's disdainful cousin, thankfully does develop a little, displaying a little more compassion and fellow-feeling than he had in the past--not that he would admit feeling it.

The book also follows the efforts, led by brave courier Bethid, to rebuild a settlement thrown into chaos by the movement of Alisanos and by the Hecari's earlier decimation of the population. While Bethid's efforts are admirable, it's hard to see this part of the story as anything but a sideshow.

I don't think that Roberson is necessarily a bad writer, and if she had an incentive to do so, she could probably have written a book that was twice as good and half as long. I think market demands for long series of long books is as least as responsible for the tediousness of DEEPWOOD as are Roberson's skills, inclinations, and imagination. Nevertheless, it is what it is, and I do not recommend it.

I really liked this book. As far as sequels go, it wasn't a lot of rehashing of the first book. The author summed it up neatly, and continued with what is turning out to be a fantastic story. Very well written, and I highly recommend this.

Enrique Alvarez reluctantly investigates Englishman Robin Gill's fatal fall from a high rock in this lackluster entry in Jeffries's long-running series. A postmortem suggests murder rather than suicide or accident, which means an investigation that will interfere with Alvarez's preferred routine of food, drink, and rest. It also means plenty of phone contact with his boss, Superior Chief Salas, and the inevitable insults, exhortations, and misunderstandings that Salas fires at him. Alvarez interviews Gill's niece, Mary Farren, who lived with the victim, and is smitten by her. Gill's household servants, friends, and financial dealings give Alvarez a list of suspects who might have a motive. Despite Salas's insistence that Farren is the chief suspect, Alvarez chooses to eliminate other, unlikely suspects first, which only serves to make Farren stand out more. Series fans will be left thinking it may be time for Alvarez to retire. (Apr.)

Charming mysteries

It is always a pleasure to settle in with an Inspector Alvarez story. I have read many in this series and so know the Inspector and his family well. These are slow paced stories
that entertain in a quiet and comfortable way. The stories contain well drawn characters
and interesting crimes, not necessarily violent. It is always nice to escape to this charming Spanish island with the Inspector.

I Love This Series

This series is so great, to me it is an overlooked gem of a series by a wonderful author. I happened to find one at a library book sale and was hooked. The books have never been reprinted and so I am gathering them all slowly on amazon, although not all are still available. I like the earlier ones best, but the characters are well done and good info on Mallorca the way it was and how it changed. I would love to read one of these mysteries while traveling in Mallorca!

Told from the perspectives of Sun, Song and a daughter of the widow Song's illicit lover, the novel offers a glimpse into a 10-year marriage between a peasant revolutionary and his rich, much younger wife who adored him (but was disgusted by his lapses in personal hygiene). Sun regrets Song's miscarriage during their violent days on the run; reflects on his abandonment of his first wife and children and his years of promiscuity; and worries about his political clout. For her part, Song, whose sister married future Taiwanese president Chiang Kai-shek, laments that she was sidelined politically after Sun's death and pines for her younger, last lover who died when she was 70. Dish on the intimate life of a revered national hero and his widow's political disillusionment and love affairs won't be a surprise to Ping Lu's readers in Taiwan (where she has published multiple works on figures including Madame Chiang Kai-shek and Soong May-ling), but this stilted effort will confuse readers less familiar with the intricacies of the region's political history. Very cool book. In just 62 chapters Ping Lu presents a history of the first president of China, Dr. Sun Yat-sen. More exactly, in the odd chapters we learn about the last month of the Founding Father of the Republic and how he reflects upon his own life as a failure. The even chapters contain the memoirs of his widow, Song Qingling, the middle of the three Song Sisters, and for a smaller part the reflections of her adopted children, the sisters Yuyu and Zenzen. Actually, Yuyu and Zenzen have never existed. They are adopted by Ping Lu to serve as her virtual eyes, in order to get a glimpse of the private side of love and revolution.

Obviously to avoid future conflicts about their real thoughts, neither Dr Sun nor Madame Song have left a track of written records. As a historian Ping Lu, however, aims to give words to a long silence. As a novelist she invented Yuyu and Zenzen, who contribute a lot to a vivid image of Madame Song. As a combination of fiction and non-fiction this book becomes a tribute to the revolutionaries who have no blood on their hands.

"People would see evidence of his (Dr Sun Yat-sen's) revolutionary and nation-building efforts, but they would also see how the lack of real power left China in a messy predicament."

This book is an eye-opener for the history of modern China. The hardest part for non-chinese readers to understand, however, is the long list of Chinese warlords who had betrayed Dr Sun Yat-sen's ideals. We have no idea who they are and what their power is. Initially, since it is hard to remember all their names, I wished for an appendix where we can read more about these opponents. However, it might have been that Ping Lu's style corroborates with time and history in obliterating all these names, so that we remember only the one that should not be forgotten.

It is interesting that in Dr Sun final memory of the lyrics "everything in the world is but a dream" the curtain rises for his longtime friend, the Japanese revolutionary, Miyazaki Toten. "Thinking of his bearded friend Sun's brows relaxed and happiness suffused him."

Ping Lu is a must-read for the reader interested in modern history of China.

I thought it would be better. However the way the writer wrote was a bit here and there, bits and pieces. I already know most of the story but anyway I was glad to read it.
