superb commentary
By rog
Rarely do I read a commentary that provokes my thinking and provides insight in the way this commentary has. The author not only has a mastery of the material in Deuteronomy better than any other commentary I have on the book, but he also shows its application to people under the New Covenant and nations in general. I have grown in my understanding not only of Deuteronomy but the Mosaic Law as a whole through reading this book. I heartily recommend it.

An easy worthwhile read
By Anonymous
This book came as a pleasant surprise for my personal study in Deuteronomy. Christopher Wright is an excellent writer and gives an engaging and thought-provoking exposition of the book. There are some helpful discussions throughout on the "ethics" of difficult issues, a number of helpful tie-ins with other Old Testament passages, and even a little application (without becoming overly "preachy"). The book is definitely targeted towards the layman / low-level preacher. It requires no knowledge of Hebrew, so it should be an easy read for those not trained in the languages. The book is solidly conservative and doesn't waste time getting bogged down in the mess of critical issues surrounding the book. Overall, while this was not my last stop in the study of Deuteronomy, it was certainly helpful in getting a "big picture" understanding of the text. I particularly enjoyed his handling of the speech in chapters 4-11, and his presentation of the flow of thought throughout those chapters.

The biggest downside to this book (and the reason for only four stars) is the "thinness" of the book in some places. As with other books in this series, this commentary is rather brief. Those looking for a more exhaustive in-depth study will need another book to read along with this. Most of the finer exegetical points are relegated to the footnotes. Some chapters only get five pages of material at best, (especially in the Law code section of chapters 12-26). Worse, the section on blessings and curses (chapter 28) gets a measly three and a half page summary, which overviews the chapter, but never really comments on specific features of the text. (There weren't even footnotes in that chapter!). This naturally leaves the reader wishing for more. For what this book is trying to do, it does it well. However, for those trying to really dig into the text, this book will need to supplement or be supplemented.

This is an excellent resource on the book of Deuteronomy. It is very detailed and relatively easy to read. I would highly suggest it. As always, you must purge out certain items that you will not agree with. Ultimately, however, you will find the book to be an excellent commentary.

Apocalypse and Allegiance: Worship, Politics, and Devotion in the Book of Revelation, by J. Nelson Kraybill

In this lively introduction, J. Nelson Kraybill shows how the book of Revelation was understood by its original readers and what it means for Christians today. Kraybill places Revelation in its first-century context, opening a window into the political, economic, and social realities of the early church. His fresh interpretation highlights Revelation's liturgical structure and directs readers' attentions to twenty-first-century issues of empire, worship, and allegiance, showing how John's apocalypse is relevant to the spiritual life of believers today. The book includes maps, timelines, photos, a glossary, discussion questions, and stories of modern Christians who live out John's vision of a New Jerusalem.

From the Back Cover
"Nelson Kraybill has written a fresh, vigorous, imaginative, demanding exposition of the book of Revelation. He has seen how deeply political the book is and has done superb homework on the Roman governance with which Revelation struggles. But his shrewd historical analysis keeps spilling over into our contemporary life--the life of a military chaplain in Texas, a health-care practice in Indiana, a prison visitor in Nebraska, peacemakers in Palestine, a poet in Japan, the police confounded in South Africa. This way of contemporaneity helps us engage this 'most dangerous book in the Bible.' Readers will be grateful to Kraybill for his agility that continues to surprise and summon as we read."--Walter Brueggemann, Columbia Theological Seminary

"Few today would doubt the political perspective of the book of Revelation, but which perspective: that of fatalism, or that of active witness and resistance? Writing from the distinctive perspective of the Anabaptist tradition, Nelson Kraybill creatively juxtaposes ancient and contemporary history to illuminate the way this remarkable vision both troubles the complacent and inspires resistance to conformity in the quest for a better world."--Christopher Rowland, University of Oxford

"Though the study and practice of Christian worship has long been deepened by the canticles of Revelation 4, 5, and 7, the rest of the book is rarely engaged in many communities. This provocative volume confronts this neglect and helps us imagine the importance of worship practices that are prophetic, countercultural, and deeply aware of the cosmic significance of the claim that Jesus is Lord."--John D. Witvliet, Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary

Revelation Finally Revealed.
By S. W. Horn
As both a minister and preacher, this is a book I've been waiting for. Finally a book that helps unravel the language and symbols of the last book of the Christian Bible. If you are looking for a traditional commentary that covers the Revelation of John, this is NOT the book for you. But, if you are looking for a book that will help open up the world that John was writing to and help explain how and why he composed his apocalypse the way he did...then this IS the book for you. And, it is the perfect companion to any commentary you might be using.

With his years of experience as both educator and minister, Dr. Kraybill offers the Church an excellent aid in understanding what the historical book of Revelation might offer the contemporary Church. In a kind, but clear, manner, Kraybill seeks to lead the reader away from fear based theologies of Revelation like those found in the Left Behind series and guide them towards a reading that offers the hope in God that John intended.

In addition to the excellent writing, this volume is also filled with excellent pictures and sidebars that help show the reader what Kraybill is trying to explain.

If you are interested in understanding the message of the Revelation of John...this a great place to start.

Hard Line: The Republican Party and U.S. Foreign Policy since World War II, by Colin Dueck

Hard Line traces the history of Republican Party foreign policy since World War II by focusing on the conservative leaders who shaped it. Colin Dueck closely examines the political careers and foreign-policy legacies of Robert Taft, Dwight Eisenhower, Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush. He shows how Republicans shifted away from isolationism in the years leading up to World War II and oscillated between realism and idealism during and after the cold war. Yet despite these changes, Dueck argues, conservative foreign policy has been characterized by a hawkish and intense American nationalism, and presidential leadership has been the driving force behind it.

What does the future hold for Republican foreign policy? Hard Line demonstrates that the answer depends on who becomes the next Republican president. Dueck challenges the popular notion that Republican foreign policy today is beholden to economic interests or neoconservative intellectuals. He shows how Republican presidents have been granted remarkably wide leeway to define their party's foreign policy in the past, and how the future of conservative foreign policy will depend on whether the next Republican president exercises the prudence, pragmatism, and care needed to implement hawkish foreign policies skillfully and successfully. Hard Line reveals how most Republican presidents since World War II have done just that, and how their accomplishments can help guide future conservative presidents.

Review
"In Hard Line, a masterful account of the evolution of Republican foreign policy over the last 70 years, Colin Dueck identifies several historical factions within the Republican party: the isolationists, who are heirs to Sen. Robert Taft; the realists, who continue the approach best-identified with the presidency of Richard Nixon; and the hawks and nationalists, who acquired greater prominence in the Reagan years and were best-represented in the administration of George W. Bush."--Nikolas K. Gvosdev, World Politics Review

"Colin Dueck's thorough analysis of the foreign-policy views of Republican political leaders since World War II has two aspects. As history, it is informative, objective, and broadly useful. . . . He presents a careful, detailed policy analysis of Republican presidents starting with Eisenhower, and includes leaders like Goldwater and Taft who significantly shaped party thinking even without the Oval Office. . . . [A]s we enter another presidential season, it is worth remembering Dueck's central insight about the importance of presidential discretion in shaping foreign policy."--John Bolton, former U.S. representative to the United Nations, National Review

"[W]hat a remarkable job of historical synthesis this work embodies. I have hurriedly added large sections of it to my class in the politics of US foreign policy and am sure many other teachers will do likewise."--Timothy J. Lynch, H-Diplo ISSF Roundtable Reviews

"Dueck has written a book that combines solid scholarship with an explicitly political message. . . . [A] thoughtful, well-informed, nuanced, and highly readable analysis."--Choice

"Those wishing to learn more about how Republicans view the world and America's place in it should read Hard Line. Clear, balanced and comprehensive, the book provides an interesting perspective on how Republicans develop and implement their foreign policy vision. . . . Hard Line is an impressive book."--John Shaw, Washington Diplomat

"Hard Line is an impressive account of the history of Republican and conservative foreign policy thinking over the past 60 years."--Tom Switzer, American Review

"Colin Dueck's superbly written history of Republican American presidents since the end of World War II is a fine introduction to American conservatism and American presidential politics alike. . . . Dueck brilliantly conflates the recent history of political thought, the emergence of new and powerful lobbies, party and domestic politics, and public diplomacy with the performance of Republican presidents."--Dustin Dehez, Journal of Global Analysis

"Hard Line is an incisive and balanced examination of Republican foreign policy over the past six decades and a persuasive argument on behalf of adherence to a prudent conservative realism as the cornerstone of future US foreign policy in a dangerous world."--Mackubin Thomas Owens, Journal of Strategic Studies

"Hard Line provides a solid overview of Republican foreign policy since World War II. Its author synthesizes numerous well-known sources into a readable narrative."--Sarah Mergel, Journal of American Studies

"This book is a welcome addition to the literature on American foreign policy in general and on Republican foreign policy in particular. . . . Colin Dueck has succeeded in debunking certain inaccurate, though commonly held, perceptions of Republican foreign policy."--Francis D. Raska, European Legacy

From the Inside Flap

"A lucid, provocative, deeply learned account of contemporary Republican foreign policy from one of America's best young diplomatic historians. If today's conservatives want to move beyond the foreign-policy failures of the Bush era, they should start by reading Duecks book."--Peter Beinart, author of The Good Fight: Why Liberals--and Only Liberals--Can Win the War on Terror and Make America Great Again

"Colin Dueck notes that foreign policy is made by presidents, not intellectuals, and he is right. But his smart, lively new book shows what intellectuals can add to the discussion: sharp, honest analysis that uncovers the reality behind the rhetoric. Hard Line is more than a masterful guide to Republican thinking and practice over the last century--it is a major contribution to the literature on American foreign policy in general."--Gideon Rose, managing editor of Foreign Affairs

"Dueck has written a clear, persuasive, and important study of Republican foreign policy. Neither an apologist nor a reflexive critic, he examines the various strands that exist within what he describes as a 'hawkish nationalist' bent. He knows that ideas are one thing, implementation and the cut and thrust of policy quite another. A major contribution to our understanding of the last six decades of American foreign policy--and, one suspects, several more to come."--Eliot A. Cohen, Johns Hopkins University

"This book provides an excellent overview of the changes in conservative thinking on foreign policy by looking at the leading figures in each successive era, from Robert Taft to George W. Bush. The prose flows beautifully, and Dueck is admirably objective in his assessments of these individuals. An extremely valuable study."--James M. Goldgeier, George Washington University

"An engaging, important, and timely study, Hard Line offers the best coverage of this period of Republican foreign policy I have seen. Through meticulous research, Dueck demonstrates the coherence and diversity of a uniquely conservative view of international affairs just at the moment when the Republican Party is reexamining and debating its foreign policy agenda for the future."--Henry R. Nau, George Washington University

Timely Reminder of Presidential Leadership
By Prose and Politics
Hard Line is a persuasive and timely analysis of conservative policy in the 20th century. Reviewing Hard Line for the National Review, former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton wrote that Dueck's "central conclusion is powerful: `The triumph of one foreign-policy type over another is crucially shaped by the president's own choices.' This insight alone is significant, emphasizing the key role of individual presidents in shaping and articulating `Republican' foreign policy...

"[A]s we enter another presidential season, it is worth remembering Dueck's central insight about the importance of presidential discretion in shaping foreign policy. Once a Republican president takes office, the various factions within the party defer to their elected leader in a fashion very different from their conduct on important domestic issues. We need, therefore, a more robust vetting on foreign-policy issues during the candidate-selection process. While far from foolproof, this vetting process is the only thing that stands between the Republican electorate and potentially disastrous foreign-policy and political consequences."

That observation seems even more apt on the heels of the 2010 midterm elections which leave many within the GOP -- and outside of it -- wondering how the outcome will shape foreign as well as domestic policy. Hard Line is a useful history of how the party has approached these questions in the past, and provides valuable insights into where Republicans are likely to lead the party now.

When Ziggy Played Guitar: David Bowie, The Man Who Changed The World, by Dylan Jones

And then there was David Bowie, the uber-freak with the mismatched pupils, the low-tech space face from the planet Sparkle. This was Bowie's third appearance on TOTP but this was the one that properly resonated with its audience, the one that would go on to cause a seismic shift in the Zeitgeist. This is the performance that turned Bowie into a star, embedding his Ziggy Stardust persona into the nation's consciousness.

With a tall, flame-orange cockade quiff (stolen from a Kansai Yamamoto model on the cover of Honey), lavishly applied make-up, white nail polish, and wearing a multi-coloured jump-suit that looked as though it were made from fluorescent fish skin (chosen by Ziggy co-shaper, the designer Freddie Buretti), and carrying a brand spanking new, blue acoustic guitar, a bone-thin Bowie appeared not so much as a pop singer, but rather as some sort of benevolent alien, a concept helped along by the provocative appearance of his guitarist, the chicken-headed Mick Ronson, with both of them unapologetically sporting knee-length patent leather wrestler's boots (Bowie's were red). 'Most people are scared of colour,' Bowie said later. 'Their lives are built up in shades of grey. It doesn't matter how straight the style is, make it brightly coloured material and everyone starts acting weird.'

Suddenly Bowie - a man called alias - had the world at his nail-varnished fingertips, and in no time at all he would be the biggest star in the world.

Review
"The best pop book I have ever read, dislodging Revolution in the Head and England's Dreaming. Superb in every way." -- Matthew d'Ancona "His blow-by-blow account of the performance is breathless in its fan-boy enthusiasm and much of the rest of When Ziggy Played Guitar is rooted in its personal impressions. "The by-product of Ziggy's success was the validation of identity, our identity", Jones writes, and it's hard not to be moved by his hero worship." New Statesman "Jones is a wonderfully fluent writer, with a terrific knack for atmospheric phrasemaking, period detail and juicy factoids." Daily Telegraph "Dylan Jones's account of David Bowie's rise to superstardom. We'll eat up anything about the greatest pop star who ever walked this planet." The Herald Magazine "Unlike previous Bowie biographies, Jones' book says less about Bowie and more about the time, reading often, and in a very entertaining way, like a culturally-aware history textbook. For every mention of the miners' strike or Bloody Sunday there's a full page devoted to The Velvet Underground or A Clockwork Orange - and these pages are needed to help fully explain how Bowie put together this character who proclaimed "let all the children boogie"." whiffytidings.com

A look at the man who, in a lot of ways, saved my life!
By Pattie
A fantastic look into the mind of David Bowie during his years as Ziggy Stardust/Aladdin Sane and Halloween Jack. The things that made him "rise" in that direction to give birth to Ziggy Stardust and a look at his eventual "fall" when he finally realized that he would have to kill Ziggy before Ziggy killed David. And yes, Ziggy Stardust may very well have kept me alive, because when that album came out I was at a very stressful place in my life. I always felt like an alien of some sort because I didn't fit in anywhere. There were many times that I considered taking my own life, but when I put on that album and her the final song "rock 'n' roll suicide" I realized that I had a friend and kindred spirit in David Bowie. "Gimme your hands cause you're wonderful"!

You have to be a massive fan and patient.
By postpunkweaselman
Why patient? As endearing and wonderful as this book is, it is stretched and repetitive to the max. It's as much about the atmosphere and conditions of England at the time as it is about Bowie. There is little new information, and although full of pictures, nothing I haven't seen a million times. How could there be. Bowie has been written about, and written about, to the point where, if you read a dozen or more of the previous biography's, it all starts to blur, and you realize you could write your own. I enjoyed his personal "autobiographical" parts of growing up on the coast and the state of the pop music world. The actual Top Of The Pops storyline, and who else played that night, etc. is repeated and woven in at every opportunity and gets a little boring. Any Bowie fan of that era knows how we felt about him, who he influenced, how "important" he was. This would have been a tremendous edited story for one of those Q magazine Bowie tributes. But as an insight, I kept waiting and waiting for that gem of information I had never heard before, and it just didn't come.

The Hot Country (Christopher Marlowe Cobb Thriller Book 1), by Robert Olen Butler

In The Hot Country, Christopher Marlowe Cobb (“Kit”), the swashbuckling early 20th century American newspaper war correspondent travels to Mexico in April and May of 1914, during that country’s civil war, the American invasion of Vera Cruz and the controversial presidency of Victoriano Huerta, El Chacal (The Jackal). Covering the war in enemy territory and sweltering heat, Cobb falls in love with Luisa, a young Mexican laundress, who is not as innocent as she seems.

The intrepid war reporter soon witnesses a priest being shot. The bullet rebounds on the cross the holly man wears around his neck and leaves him unharmed. Cobb employs a young pickpocket to help him find out the identity of the sniper and, more importantly, why important German officials are coming into the city in the middle of the night from ammunition ships docked in the port.

An exciting tale of intrigue and espionage, Butler’s powerful crime-fiction debut is a thriller not to be missed.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Butler takes his first crack at crime fiction with this stylish historical thriller set in civil war–torn Mexico in 1914. Christopher Marlowe Cobb (call him “Kit”) is a newspaper war correspondent in search of action, so naturally he winds up in Vera Cruz just as the American navy is staging a very peculiar mini-invasion. Kit would like to get to the bottom of that, and he would also like to score an interview with Pancho Villa. Then there’s the matter of the Mexican woman who may be a laundress but may also be something very different—and with whom Kit has very definitely fallen in love. And let’s not forget the German entourage: What are they doing in Vera Cruz? Along the way to answering all those questions, Kit gets more directly involved in the fighting than he’d planned. (And so do we: Butler’s multipage, one-sentence description of a gun battle between Villa’s troops and the Federales is a virtuoso feat of breathless, high-energy descriptive prose.) The plot of this multistranded thriller is at times difficult to follow, but the character studies, sense of place, and mood are utterly gripping. The hard-bitten war correspondent is a staple of the thriller genre, of course, but Butler brings new depth and flair to the familiar figure; only Fowler in Graham Greene’s The Quiet American (1956) or perhaps Russell Cruz-Price, Kent Harrington’s dissolute journalist in Red Jungle (2005), comes close to Kit Marlowe for that irresistible mix of been-there-twice-seen-this-shit-before cynicism and its polar opposite, an unquenchable desire to see if the next card turned just might be something special. Reviewers feel that way, too, sometimes, but the card this book turns is definitely something special. --Bill Ott

Review
"This high-spirited adventure by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Olen Butler is an antic concoction of genre clichés, literary sendups, personal homages, fanciful history and passages of great writing."—New York Times Book Review

"It's an exciting story, much of it based on fact, and Butler has a good time with it. His writing is both crisp and thoughtful, his people ring true and he offers an amusing portrait of a golden age in journalism. . . . The Hot Country is a thinking person's thriller, the kind of exotic adventure that, in better days, would have been filmed by Sam Peckinpah."—Washington Post

"Butler takes an often-overlooked chapter of history and turns it into a whip-smart tale of intrigue and espionage."—CNN.com

“A high-spirited adventure.”—Charlotte Observer

“Enjoyable novel that should attract devotees of espionage and historical fiction.”—Library Journal

“A fine stylist, Butler renders the time and place in perfect detail.”—Publishers Weekly

"An awfully good read."—Criminal Intent

"[The Hot Country is] Robert Olen Butler’s fast-paced entrée into adventure tales. Add a little Indiana Jones and you get the picture: a smart guy also handy with his fists and firearms, burdened with a dedication to finding out the truth."—Plaza de Armas

“Pancho Villa, fiery senoritas, and Germans up to no good—Robert Olen Butler is having fun in The Hot Country and readers will too. An intelligent entertainment with colorful history.”—Joseph Kanon, New York Times bestselling author of The Good German and Istanbul Passage

“The Hot Country is a spirited and beautifully told tale of adventure and intrigue in the grand old style, rich in both insight and atmosphere. Going off to war with Kit Cobb is as bracing and fun as it used to be in George MacDonald Fraser’s Flashman books, or in Perez-Reverte’s Captain Alatriste novels. And the best part is that there are more to come. Saddle up.”—Dan Fesperman, Hammett award-winning author of The Double Game

Interesting, well written
By Wulfstan
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Olen Butler certainly knows how to turn a phase, and he also does superb characterizations.

What's more, this is hardly the typical "swashbuckling thriller". It is more the "thinking mans Historical Investigative Reporter".

Christopher Marlowe Cobb ("Kit") is handsome, brave, and intelligent, and certainly able to hold his own in a back-alley brawl. But he's no James Bond. Readers looking for over the top "Perils of Pauline" type action thrillers should look elsewhere. Clive Cussler he ain't.

Which, even tho I enjoy an occasional action thriller by Cussler- is a Good Thing.
The novel also hits upon a little known and very misunderstood period of American history, what with Pancho Villa, the Mexican Revolution, and the runn-up to WWI.

Very well written.

Do it yourself Kit.
By Tanstaafl
Our hero, Christopher "Kit" Marlowe Cobb, a world traveling reporter, tells his own story in this mystery set in the Mexico of a century ago. What is interesting, and maddening, is that the reporter tells his story as a novelist with a thesaurus close at hand rather than as a reporter trained to get to the point.

The over descriptive, over long sentences slow down this "adventure" novel to a pace normally found in novels written by Eastern European novelists. While those have their place, and I often enjoy reading them, that doesn't fit the subject of this book by Robert Olen Butler.

Kit seems to see himself as a Hemingway type of guy before Hemingway really made the scene. He tries to be macho with the ladies and hides behind trees from the guys. He is supposedly world wise but is too dense too often about what's going on around him. Imagine knowing you are being watched; making a point of it, then forgetting to go back to it as the story goes on. That's bad enough, but the other person sitting there notices the same thing and also ignores it. Not likely in a mystery/adventure/spy novel. In fact, I nearly threw the book across the room at page 108 when more stuff just plain failed to make any sense at all.

Interspersed through the book, Christopher "Kit" Marlowe Cobb reveals some things about his mother that makes for some of the more interesting moments in the story. Unfortunately, too few of the pages are about her. Perhaps Butler chose the wrong family member to write a story. Or, maybe neither should have.

Far too often, the author makes use of that great literary gimmick of "coincidence" to move things along. For example, it seems that one person can be in two places at the same time. Since many authors use this device, it's particularly interesting that people had that ability in the pre-atomic age of a century ago.

Each such shortcut adds to a reader's tally of reasons to stop turning the pages until it reaches point where the book closes for the last time unfinished. While this on did not get to that tipping point, it came closer than I would have wished.

Amazingly (remember my reference to page 108?), at about page 216, and some pages following, I was reminded of the westerns of my youth. They were the type that made sure the stars never got killed, were able to fire thirty bullets from a six-shooter, and they always got the girls even though the audience were never shown what they actually did with them once they had them. In this instance, our hero, Christopher "Kit" Marlowe Cobb, becomes someone totally different in order for this book to get to page 217 and the sequel(s) to be published.

I am, at that point, not looking forward to page 324 (I looked ahead and my ARC edition has 326 pages.) When I reached that third multiple of 108, I was disappointed that I hadn't been disappointed. The last sentence on page 324 sealed the deal that I definitely will not read the next in the series.

One star is mandatory. Another for the history, the girls, and setting. The third because some of the other side characters were far more interesting than Christopher "Kit" Marlowe Cobb.

The Hot Country: A slow sizzle that builds
By John Williamson
Picture this: It's the spring of 1914. Christopher Marlowe "Kit" Cobb, a reporter for a Chicago newspaper, is sent to the Gulf of Mexico port city of Vera Cruz to cover the invasion of Mexico that had been ordered by President Woodrow Wilson.

That is the basic plot behind The Hot Country, a historical fiction tale by author Robert Olen Butler, a Pulitzer Prize winner. And though the author skillfully paints a scenic picture of the area and the times, this is no travelogue or Baedeker guide of the region. Victoriano Huerta, known by many as El Chacal (The Jackal) was the Mexican president, and the country was involved in a bloody civil war. Mexican revolutionary leader Pancho Villa had joined the rebellion against Huerta, and the activist was being supplied arms from the US.

World War I (the "Great War") has yet to begin, and Germany has a major presence in the port city, which includes a consulate that Kit Cobb, along with many of the other journalists, considers to be a virtual nest of spies. Kit had met Luisa Morales shortly before the Marines arrived in Vera Cruz, a lively señorita with whom he becomes quite intrigued. When a German ship appears in the Vera Cruz harbor, Kit hires a petty thief to keep a watchful eye on the ship. Cobb tells his tale as a first-person narrative, which adds to the reading of this tale.

A strange and somewhat mysterious German official gets off of the ship, and Cobb becomes curious as to what he might be up to. Our intrepid reporter begins to suspect Luisa as the sniper in the non-fatal shootings of a Mexican priest, an official who is collaborating with the Americans, and an American Marine.

We find an occasionally lethargic plot, stereotypes, minutiae that can slow things down, and run-on sentences that will leave the reader wondering where this story is going. But we also find a compelling atmosphere, an excitement that builds, a spunky señorita, political intrigue, cross (and double-cross), espionage, along with a mystery. As might be expected, author Butler has an expansive and unreserved vocabulary, which adds to the enjoyment of reading this tale.

Author Butler is a skilled craftsman when it comes to building a scenario, and for this reader, it was an enjoyable read. He has obviously researched the time and locations quite well, and it shows in this interesting new work. I was already somewhat familiar with the author from his previous works, such as his often-hilarious 1996 collection Tabloid Dreams, which came from the titles of bizarre articles in the supermarket tabloids. His 1993 Pulitzer Prize winning short-story collection A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain was a title that I had indulged in the pleasure of reading years ago. Both of these have recently been re-released.

The Hot Country had this reader fluctuating for awhile. The story started as quite interesting, with enough of a background to make it good, as author Butler is a skilled literary stylist. There were points where it dipped as a result of the run-on sentences, but in retrospect they add to the human element of the narrative, which add up to make this an engrossing read, and as it appears to be listed as a "Christopher Marlowe Cobb Thriller," I am looking forward to the next one. It's sluggish in places, but the story develops gradually and methodically, a slow sizzle that builds.

The Ground Beneath Her Feet: A Novel, by Salman Rushdie

Salman Rushdie's most ambitious and accomplished novel, sure to be hailed as his masterpiece.

At the beginning of this stunning novel, Vina Apsara, a famous and much-loved singer, is caught up in a devastating earthquake and never seen again by human eyes. This is her story, and that of Ormus Cama, the lover who finds, loses, seeks, and again finds her, over and over, throughout his own extraordinary life in music. Their epic romance is narrated by Ormus's childhood friend and Vina's sometime lover, her "back-door man," the photographer Rai, whose astonishing voice, filled with stories, images, myths, anger, wisdom, humor, and love, is perhaps the book's true hero. Telling the story of Ormus and Vina, he finds that he is also revealing his own truths: his human failings, his immortal longings. He is a man caught up in the loves and quarrels of the age's goddesses and gods, but dares to have ambitions of his own. And lives to tell the tale.

Around these three, the uncertain world itself is beginning to tremble and break. Cracks and tears have begun to appear in the fabric of the real. There are glimpses of abysses below the surfaces of things. The Ground Beneath Her Feet is Salman Rushdie's most gripping novel and his boldest imaginative act, a vision of our shaken, mutating times, an engagement with the whole of what is and what might be, an account of the intimate, flawed encounter between the East and the West, a brilliant remaking of the myth of Orpheus, a novel of high (and low) comedy, high (and low) passions, high (and low) culture. It is a tale of love, death, and rock 'n' roll.

Amazon.com Review
The ground shifts repeatedly beneath the reader's feet during the course of Salman Rushdie's sixth novel, a riff on the Orpheus and Eurydice myth set in the high-octane world of rock & roll. Readers get their first clues early on that the universe Rushdie is creating here is not quite the one we know: Jesse Aron Parker, for example, wrote "Heartbreak Hotel"; Carly Simon and Guinevere Garfunkel sang "Bridge over Troubled Water"; and Shirley Jones and Gordon McRae starred in "South Pacific." And as the novel progresses, Rushdie adds unmistakable elements of science fiction to his already patented magical realism, with occasionally uneven results.

Rushdie's cunning musician is Ormus Cana, the Bombay-born founder of the most popular group in the world. Ormus's Eurydice (and lead singer) is Vina Apsara, the daughter of a Greek American woman and an Indian father who abandoned the family. What these two share, besides amazing musical talent, is a decidedly twisted family life: Ormus's twin brother died at birth and communicates to him from "the other side"; his older brothers, also twins, are, respectively, brain-damaged and a serial killer. Vina, on the other hand, grew up in rural West Virginia where she returned home one day to find her stepfather and sisters shot to death and her mother hanging from a rafter in the barn. No wonder these two believe they were made for each other.

Narrated by Rai Merchant, a childhood friend of both Vina and Ormus, The Ground Beneath Her Feet begins with a terrible earthquake in 1989 that swallows Vina whole, then moves back in time to chronicle the tangled histories of all the main characters and a host of minor ones as well. Rushdie's canvas is huge, stretching from India to London to New York and beyond--and there's plenty of room for him to punctuate this epic tale with pointed commentary on his own situation: Muslim-born Rai, for example, remarks that "my parents gave me the gift of irreligion, of growing up without bothering to ask people what gods they held dear.... You may argue that the gift was a poisoned chalice, but even if so, that's a cup from which I'd happily drink again." Despite earthquakes, heartbreaks, and a rip in the time-space continuum, The Ground Beneath Her Feet may be the most optimistic, accessible novel Rushdie has yet written. --Alix Wilber

From Publishers Weekly
Time and space, understood conventionally, have never been enough for Rushdie's antic imagination, and here he needs two parallel universes to contain this playful, highly allusive journey through the last 40 years of pop culture. Ormus Cama, a supernaturally gifted musician, and his beloved, Vina Apsara, a half-Indian woman with a soul-thrilling voice, meet in Bombay in the late '50s, discover rock and roll, and form a band that goes on to become the world's most popular musical act. Narrator Rai Merchant, their lifelong friend, is a world-famous photographer and Vina's "backdoor man." Rai tells the story of their great, abiding love (both are named for love gods: Cama as in Kama Sutra, and Vina for Venus), which thrives on obstacles. At first Vina is underage, and Ormus swears not to touch her until she turns 16; then, after one night of love, she disappears for a decade, returning only to rescue Ormus from a near fatal coma. While he swears chastity for a decade, Vina tests their commitment with a string of other lovers, of whom only Rai is kept secret. Ultimately, Ormus and Vina reenact the Orpheus myth, not once but twice. And this is only the heart of a plot whose action moves from Bombay to London to Manhattan. Rai's work as photographer underwrites meditations on 20th-century art and journalism. Rock and roll inspires endless fun, as Rushdie sprinkles lyrics into his narrative, and scrambles pop music names and historyAElvis Presley becomes Jesse Garon Parker, for instance. History is scrambled, too: Watergate turns out to be nothing more than a pulp thriller. The reader slowly discovers that the novel is set in a universe parallel to our own, and the characters catch glimpses of an alternate reality that looks more like our actual world. Despite many comic and dazzling passages, the hyperbole, the scrambled allusions and the parallel universes eventually become wearying. While not one of his masterpieces, this flawed giant is a spirited, head-spinning entertainment from a writer of undeniable genius. Agent: The Wylie Agency. From Library Journal
This is the story of Vina Aspara, a woman doomed to a life of fame and tragedy. Two men spend their lives loving her: Ormus, who becomes her partner in a band that breaks all pop music records, and Rai, who has loved her since childhood. Vina lives an unsteady life, never settling on one place or one man. The narrator, Rai, shifts among times and places frequently, often foreshadowing things to come and then going back to tell how it all came to pass. Rushdie is not writing to be heard; his allusions to mythology and pop culture are frequent and complex, inviting contemplation and consideration. This, combined with the multitude of characters and histories, makes the book difficult to follow while driving in heavy traffic or washing dishes. Nonetheless, Stephen Crossley's reading is superb, making the frequent long stretches of exposition, description, and Rai's musings on the state of the universe, which might be tedious to many readers in print, sparkle. He does a fair job of bringing the characters to life and distinguishing among their many voices. Generous pauses between scenes, which might be annoying in a less dense work, are welcome moments for reflection. This is cerebral literary fiction and a worthy book by an important author in a format many might find less intimidating than print; recommended.AAdrienne Furness, Genesee Community Coll., Batavia, NY

Not Rushdie's best, but worth reading
By A Customer
For the Rushdie fan, there is much in this book to be admired: imagination, brilliant storytelling, an excellent sense of humor and passages of some of the best prose being written in English today. It seems, at times, that Rushdie's inventive capacity is unlimited: the strangest of characters emerge with the most checkered of personal histories, idiosyncrasies and destinies -- so much so that believability is stretched to almost absurd limits. But hasn't this always been Rushdie's domain, ever since Midnight's Children? The difference here, perhaps (and this is why the novel is not a peer of Rushdie's best), is that the author appears to let the absurd, the outlandish, the improbable invade in almost random tentacles throughout the body of the work. Also, the prose is not as consistent as in earlier works -- flashes of brilliance, of genius, are followed by untidy ramblings in need of editing. There is something baffling-joycean about the work, but that is a mode that doesn't really suit Rushdie and his mature voice. He is at his absolute best at times, but the whole structure of the work does not always sustain the narrative. Moreover, you never really feel that Ormus and Vina are truly in love -- the deep love never really happens -- not anything that seems human, at least. Perhaps owing to the rock'n'roll milieu in which the novel transpires, there is more use of gutter language and more casual exposes of sexual acts and fantasies than one would normally encounter in a Rushdie novel. A bit of this kind of language is descriptive, demonstrative; too much of it (and this happens from time to time) impoverishes the overall texture of the novel. Still, Rushdie remains one of the most exciting and engaging writers alive today. I have not yet found a rival in the modern literary world. Let's only hope that his next novel will find the right blend between inventive caprice and the craftsmanship of an undisputed master.

Out of control.
By Mary Whipple
Although I have loved other Rushdie novels and admired their complexities, I found this novel disappointing on a number of levels, not least of which is its clumsiness in style. Rushdie here veers from narrative to philosophical exposition, and even polemic, sometimes within the same paragraph. He appears to distance himself not only from his characters but also from his readers. The reader is jarred to no purpose when the narrative, which already switches back and forth in time and location, is interrupted yet again for turgid philosophical ramblings which do nothing to advance the plot and seem to serve primarily to give the illusion of depth to a shallow, too-long story.
At times the author patronizes both the reader and his characters: "Doorman Shetty doesn't know it, but he's echoing Plato. This is what the great philosopher has Phaedrus say in the Symposiums's first speech about love...." Two pages of philosophy follow.
In the conclusion of the book, when it is necessary to tie up the loose ends, the author devotes many pages to "telling about" the action, rather than recreating it and allowing the reader to draw his/her own conclusions. In case we have missed the many parallels he has made between his characters and the classical myths, he summarizes them for us. In the final two chapters, he also shifts the focus, startlingly, to the narrator, rather than keeping it on the two characters who have been the center(s) of the novel. And even on the last page, the author feels it necessary to explain, even providing us with the unifying theme of the book, should we need it: "In my lifetime, the love of Ormus and Vina is as close as I've come to a knowledge of the mythic, the overweening, the divine. Now that they've gone, the high drama's over. What remains is ordinary human life." The delights of this book, and there are many, are so deeply hidden in verbiage and in the exaltation of theme that this reader, at least, got tired of the shrieking and longed for a simple song.

Rumblings of a Subterranean Force
By vjaidka@ch1.dot.net.in
"The Ground Beneath Her Feet" is Rushdie's latest offering to the world. It is yet another eruption of the rumbling force trapped under the landslide of hate and fanaticism. It is a voice from the underground pleading to be set free. The mythical framework used by Rushdie is the Orpheus-Eurydice legend. Orpheus ventured to the land of the dead to bring Eurydice back to life. Paralleling this myth is its Indian counterpart: that of Kama and Rati. Kama was destroyed by the third eye of Shiva but, when Rati pleaded, Shiva soon relented and restored him to life. These two legends are worked into Salman Rushdie's novel.
Ostensibly it is a love-story: the story of Vina Apsara and Ormus Cama, both star singers, much in love with each other, locked in a volatile relationship that can neither be consummated easily nor abandoned as a lost cause. Hovering between the two is Umeed Merchant, a.k.a. Rai, a professional photographer, also hopelessly infatuated with Vina Apsara. Rai is the narrator of the foredoomed love-story, the Tiresias who sees all and suffers all, the bard who can see and narrate Past, Present, and Future. The narrative begins with the disappearance of Vina Apsara on Valentine's Day of 1989 (which in reality was the day when Khomeini passed the infamous fatwa against Rushdie), loops back in time to recount events that took place in the past, and returns in a circumlocutory manner to the main story, thus completing a full circle. The myths used are timeless, but they are placed in a contemporary situation, making the story comprehensible to us in the present times.
What is unusual about Rushdie's latest gift to his readers is the music content of his book. Rushdie is no stranger to popular music. His earlier works have several references to popular songs, but in the present book music is an integral part of the story. Without it the story of Vina and Ormus would fall apart. During the last ten years, among the few people that the author has been in touch with is the rock group U2, whose lead singer, Bono, is his close friend. In fact, U2 was supposed to bring out a new album to coincide with the release of Rushdie's book. The book itself was to be marketed with a CD-ROM. However, the recording of the songs got delayed and the book has hit the market before the songs. The U2 album will shortly be released, we are told, and it has a few haunting lyrics from The Ground Beneath Her Feet.
Coupled with the music that weaves in and out of the story, is Rushdie's inimitable play with words. With language. With the known world as we percieve it. With history, as he distorts facts, combining reality with fantasy. His style remains irreverent, even arrogant, in the manner it challenges traditional usage, as in his erratic punctuation, when he repeatedly places a question mark and a comma together (?,). He deliberately thumbs his nose at the conservative reader in his idiosyncratic naming of his characters - Doodhwalla, his wife Gol-Matol, their daughters Halwa and Ras Gulla. True, sometimes the parody becomes annoying - for instance when Ormus's near-fatal accident is with a truckload of shit! But this is part of Rushdie's devil-may-care style: the brazenness of one who can look reality in the face, and yet see his own version of it. Who can unashamedly, unabashedly drop all pretences and be what he is because nothing, really nothing, matters any more. So, this is Rushdie. Take it or leave it!
What, one may ask, is the impact of the book? Perhaps it is too early to say. There has been too much of hype. Expectations have been inflated and analytical responses need more time. Perhaps, when the tremors have ceased and life gets back to normal it will be possible to determine the impact of this Rushdie-quake. Where is the epicenter? What is the intensity on the Richter scale? Is it a 6.8 or an 8.2? The music of Ormus and Vina still resounds, sometimes mournful, sometimes triumphant. Perhaps, when the last notes of music fade away and its echoes linger in the mind, or when we accept all of Rushdie's stylistic/verbal gimmickry, when we can finally turn to the unpretentious aspects of the book, only then will we be able to actually hear and understand the crie de coeur of an exiled writer from his subterranean refuge. Only then will his words hit us with their full impact: She was my ground, my favorite sound, my country road, my city street, my sky above, my only love, and the ground beneath my feet. Go lightly down your darkened way, go lightly underground, I'll be down there in another day, I won't rest until you're found. Let me love you true, let me rescue you, let me lead you to where two roads meet. O come back above, where there's only love, and the ground's beneath your feet.
Forget the banality of the lyrics. Forget the clichéd expressions of longing. What we have here is the voice of the author trapped under the garbage of human hate and fanaticism. What we have is a bleak, mournful, failing voice. A voice asking to be heard. Asking for reprieve.
And what is our response?
The silence of the Gutless!
