Return to the Sea portrays the life and evolutionary times of marine mammals—from giant whales and sea cows that originated 55 million years ago to the deep diving elephant seals and clam-eating walruses of modern times. This fascinating account of the origin of various marine mammal lineages, some extinct, others extant but threatened, is for the non-specialist. Set against a backdrop of geologic time, changing climates, and changing geography, evolution is the unifying principle that helps us to understand the present day diversity of marine mammals and their responses to environmental challenges. Annalisa Berta explains current controversies and explores patterns of change taking place today, such as shifting food webs and predator-prey relationships, habitat degradation, global warming, and the effects of humans on marine mammal communities.

"Over the past 55 million years, mammals have returned to the sea many times and in many places. Annalisa Berta leads readers through this parade of transitions, highlighting how marine mammals have met the evolutionary challenge of living an aquatic life in a variety of ways. Return to the Sea weaves ecology, anatomy, and evolution into an ideal entry point for anyone interested in knowing more about one of the most fascinating phenomena in macroevolution."--Nicholas D. Pyenson, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution

loved it
By Laura T
Excellent introduction and review of the evolution , diversity and adaptation of seals , walrus , whales and dolphins , manatees , polar bears and sea otters . Written by an evolutionary biologist for a non-scientific audience , this book is very accessible to the lay reader . So many fascinating facts and ideas , I was often left craving for more . There is also a broad section on conservation . The illustrations are wonderful

Why did the ancestors go back to the sea? Heavy on evolution, a most excellent book.
By lyndonbrecht
The author is an authority on the subject, and is also evidently a skilled writer. This book is extremely well-written. It is a superb introduction to the topic. She covers a huge amount in a short book and makes it accessible to a non-specialist. Books on nature from UC Press are often very good, and this is one of the best.
If you do not credit the theory of evolution, this is not your book. I do, and regard the science as completely convincing. This book is heavy on evolution, and does use some technical vocabulary, but these too are accessible. The bibliography is very good and features many web sites that seem worth exploring (I have not done so).
So, if you are interested in the evolution of whales, walruses, seals and the rest, this is the book. Why the ancestors abandoned the land is ultimately a matter of environmental opportunity--unless somehow they foresaw us humans coming along.

Great, but with a caveat.
By Tim Morris
The preview of this book is in color, so I expected the illustrations to be in color. I downloaded a digital copy to see if it was worth buying, the illustrations were in color there too. But the print version is entirely black and white, which really washes out and reduces the impact of Carl Buell's wonderful paintings. Also, this book skims over some groups, seeming to focus on living groups mainly, with some emphasis also on chronology and faunas. There is only 1 good illustration of "legged whales" in this book, and the book does not even mention Squalodontid "shake toothed" odontocetes, Dusignathine walruses are only mentioned once (those are walrus with 4 tusks, surely worth at least a picture). There is an opportunity to make a book about the mind-boggling diversity of fossil marine mammals, but this book is quite general, and mainly focuses on the ancestry of living groups (except for Desmostylians and Thalassocnus, which are covered fairly well). Good for what you get, but I'm still waiting for a "Big Book of Fossil Marine Mammals" that shows the true diversity in a well-illustrated way, with fossils and life recons (this book does that for a good few groups, but doesn't even touch on how truly diverse these groups are).
