George Herbert (1593-1633) has come to be one of the most admired of the metaphysical poets. Though he is a profoundly religious poet, even secular readers respond to his quiet intensity and exuberant inventiveness, which are amply showcased in this selection.
Herbert experimented brilliantly with a remarkable variety of forms, from hymns and sonnets to pattern poems, the shapes of which reveal their subjects. Such technical agility never seems ostentatious, however, for precision of language and expression of genuine feeling were the primary concerns of this poet, who admonished his readers to “dare to be true.” An Anglican priest who took his calling with deep seriousness, he brought to his work a religious reverence richly allied with a playful wit and with literary and musical gifts of the highest order. His best-loved poems, from “The Collar” and “Jordan” to “The Altar” and “Easter Wings,” achieve a perfection of form and feeling, a rare luminosity, and a timeless metaphysical grandeur.

About the Author
George Herbert was born in 1593, the fifth son of Richard Herbert of Montgomery and Magdalene Herbert, to whom John Donne dedicated his elegy ‘Autumnal Beauty’. He was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was appointed Reader in Rhetoric in 1618 and Public Orator in 1620. Herbert was an excellent Greek and Latin scholar and was fluent in Italian, Spanish and French; he was also an accomplished amateur musician. He seemed destined for a great public career and attracted the attention of two powerful and influential figures, the Duke of Richmond and the Marquess of Hamilton, and, when they met, King James I took a liking to him. However, when his two aristocratic patrons, and then, in 1625, King James, all died, any hope of immediate preferment was dashed. In 1626 he resigned his seat in Parliament and took holy orders, becoming Rector of Bemerton, a tiny rural parish on Salisbury Plain, in 1630. In the previous year he had married Jane Danvers after a courtship of only three days, and their marriage was a happy one. Herbert died of consumption at the age of forty on March 1, 1633.Early in 1633 Herbert, aware of his imminent death, sent a copy of his book The Temple to his friend Nicholas Ferrar, requesting him to burn it or print it as he saw fit, and two editions were published before the end of that year. The Temple comprises almost all his surviving English poems, and it is upon this volume that his reputation rests. His other surviving work includes a set of Latin poems, Memoriae Matris Sacrum, written in memory of his mother; a handful of short occasional poems; two sets of sacred poems, Lucus and Passio Discerpta and Musae Responsoriae, a defense of the Church of England against Andrew Melville’s Anti-Tami-Cami-Categoria. Of his prose, A Priest to the Temple, notes on The Hundred and Ten Considerations by Juan de Valdés, the translation of Luigi Cornaro’s Treatise of Temperance and Sobrietie, some of his Latin letters and orations, and a portion of his private correspondence have survived. Thirteen editions of The Temple were published between 1633 and 1679; after that his reputation began to wane. However, the 1799 edition of The Temple heralded a revival, to which Coleridge’s appreciation in Biographia Literaria gave a considerable boost: ‘George Herbert is a true poet, but a poet sui generis, the merits of whose poems will never be felt, without a sympathy with the mind and character of the man.’

A Wonderful Collection of Herbert's Poetry

Unlike Byron or Coleridge, George Herbert did not write epic poetry, but rather short religious vignettes which I find very pleasing. As a Christian, I find his quiet devotion to God enjoyable (let alone exemplary).
I compared this particular anthology to a volume of Herbert's complete English works. This book contains all but four or five of Herbert's poems. It also lacks an extensive biography that the complete volume contained. I chose this edition over the other on account of its compact size -- truly small enough to fit into a larger side pocket. The poems are well-spaced out and the print is very clear.
Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys religious poetry.

Exquisite Religious Poetry for All

George Herbert's poetry is, to my ears, some of the best religious poetry ever written. I studied a lot of poetry in grad school, but Herbert remains at the very top of my own personal literary canon. In Herbert, the best of godly devotion and exquisite craftsmanship are married, and that is a rare thing.
This edition is a nearly complete collection of Herbert's poetry at a good price.
The poetry itself is divine. Although English metaphysical poetry may not be to everyone's taste, and it will be difficult for many modern readers, it's perfectly suited to mine. I love the whimsical word play and the delight in the English language that Herbert manifests. The form matches the matter, and it always seems as if the poems end when they should on a note of satisfaction and having said just what one wanted to say. Most important of all, Herbert's poetry assists me in my praise of and devotion to my Lord.
One of the most excellent aspects of Herbert's poetry is that it is not merely the individual meditations of a solitary Christian but is intimately connected to the life of Christ by being connected to His Bride, the Church. The structure of Herbert's collection, "The Temple," is aptly named. In summary, Herbert's poetry is a delight to my ears, my tongue, my mind, and my soul!
Herbert's poetry also has a very personal connection with me: I used to read it to my wife when we were courting and early in our marriage. Not only did it move her, but it also raised her estimation of me. Thank you, George Herbert!

Five stars for Herbert's poetry, of course ...

... but the would-be purchaser of this volume should know that accented or voiced -ed endings are not indicated in this particular text. An example: "And art thou grieved, sweet and sacred Dove" instead of "And art thou grievèd..." Unless one has a poet's familiarity with iambic rhythm, there is a likelihood that the reader will omit a syllable if he or she reads the poem aloud.
We are grateful that the spelling has been modernized in this edition, as seventeenth-century orthography can encumber readerly ease. However, the omission described above is crucially detrimental: it affects how the poem is recited, and as we know, poetry is meant to be read aloud!
So, yes, five stars for the luminous, titanic, life-giving poetry of George Herbert (we think especially of "Virtue," of "Prayer," of "Love [III]," and of "The Flower"), but I must deduct a "star" for the editorial lassitude that mars this otherwise handsome and companionable book.
