Prolific writer Titchmarsh's lavishly illustrated history of the royal gardens includes vivid profiles of monarchs and landscapers as he begins with the period from 1066 to 1485, from the reign of William the Conqueror to Richard III, then proceeds to descriptive and informative accounts of British gardening under the Tudors, the House of Stuart, the House of Hanover, Queen Victoria (1837-1901), and Edward VII to Elizabeth II (1901-2004). With each of these reigns, Titchmarsh lists the edibles, flowers, and shrubs that were grown, and offers such interesting tidbits as the fact that grass was cut with scythes until 1830, when the lawnmower was invented (three men with scythes could cut an acre of grass in a day). But there's much more here than technical matters. As Titchmarsh writes, "If you are expecting nothing but regal hearts and flowers, gentle romance, and pastoral idylls, be warned--royal garden history is packed with intrigue, skulduggery and dirty doings." Kings and Queens shape English garden style

The history of English gardening, as related by one of England's most beloved garden authorities, was guided and influenced by the Royal family over hundreds of years.
Alan Titchmarsh has written a fascinating book full of insightful observations and little-known facts about gardening tools, people, and plants. Along the way we discover how English gardening was influenced by the choices and preferences of the Kings and Queens of England, and by the trends that came over from Italy, France, and Holland. As time went on, England finally developed its own distinct style - a style that we still admire and emulate today.
Highly recommended for those who are interested in English gardening, and English garden history

Alan Titchmarsh is an outstanding gardener, he has so much knowledge about gardens and landscaping. Excellent book, with all the beautiful illustrations of all the Royal gardens in England.

Brief, but to the point

Very well illustrated with color photos for the period up to the the Georgians. But, then the illustrations aren't as lavish, and while the black and white photographs from the Edwardian period through World War II are necessary to document history, they seem out of place in the middle of so much color otherwise.
The book is filled with mini-biographies of people who influenced gardening as an art and science and it gives short histories of how various plants were introduced to Britain as well as things that were grown in the past but not now. This information will help anyone who wishes to do additional
research.
The text is easy to read; it doesn't read like a travel brochure or a textbook.
