Aaron Turner was a third generation American. His grandfather, Thomas Turner, first appearing in OUT OF THE WILDERNESS, had come from Ireland to settle in South Carolina. In this second installment in the Western Quest Series, Aaron hears the call of the West, like many Americans of the period. Each time Aaron travels to Vera Cruz, New Orleans or Natchitoches on trading ventures, he hears more and more about Texas. Finally, seduced by the lure of the unknown, he leads an expedition down the Camino Real through the heart of Texas. He encounters a land of abundant resources and tremendous potential, but also great danger. Although his party had to battle Karankawa and Comanche Indians, he falls under the spell of Texas. Aaron finds his “promised land” where the Camino Real crosses the Navasota River, on the edge of what would become Austin’s Colony. Can he turn his dreams into reality? There will be many miles to travel, many tears and much blood to shed before he will know the answer. This second in the Series takes Aaron from a participant at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 through the turmoil of Mexico’s revolt from Spain and the growing pains of the new Republic of Mexico. He will become acquainted with Lieutenant Colonel Santa Anna and a land speculator, Stephen F. Austin. Both will play significant roles in his future. STEPHEN L. TURNER was born a fifth generation Texan, sixth generation Arkansan, and an eighth generation American. His youth was steeped in the history and culture of his heritage. He graduated from Texas Tech School of Medicine, and has worked as a pediatrician in rural Plainview, Texas since 1984. He is married with two married children. He spends his free time running their panhandle ranch, raising horses and hunting. He enjoys reading and writing historical fiction.

Review
''Dr. Turner spins a fascinating story of this family's arrival in the New World and their ability to make a successful life of their adventure here. His depiction of life in the South Carolina wilderness is particularly informing and plausible to me. I enjoyed reading it immensely.'' --Bill Kinney, Jr., Publisher, Marlboro Herald-Advocate, July 9, 2009

The Personal Side of History
By Jim Loyd
My family's oldest link to Texas history is an application for a Mexican land grant in which my ancestor stated that he and his wife had been in Texas since "before 1824". That doesn't give me much insight into that period. But Steve Turner's book helped me to kick my imagination into high gear and visualize what real people might have experienced. His characters give me the kind of detail that grabs my interest, and moves the story to the next scene. The King's Road might have been rough, but this volume of the Turner family history is nothing less than a first class ticket through an era when their daily experiences are almost unbelievable by today's standards. It helps me to appreciate how rough life was and how good it is.

Reading is fun again
By Dustin Dyer
I have to admit that I do not read on a regular basis other than a newspaper or homework with my children. But since Dr. Turner told me that he was publishing books about his family history I cannot help but find myself picking up both of his books to read over and over again. The first was exceptional and this one was even better. I truly look forward to the next book, and I want to thank Dr. Turner for getting me excited about reading again. These books are great for me to read to my nine year old and we enjoy that time together. But it also is great for me to sit and relax with these books. Thanks a million Dr. Turner for sharing your family history with us in such great and fun detail.

Discovering TX
By ghannabas
This historical book tells the fascinating story of Aaron Turner, one of the early settlers of Texas. The story follows his steps as he works as a merchant trader, soldier for Andrew Jackson, and adventurer into the wild, untamed land known as "Tejas." The author ties in familiar moments of US and Texas History from the War of 1812 to Mexico's Independence to Stephen F. Austin's first quest to set up the Austin Colony. Chapters detail the life people such as Turner during this era, giving the reader a glimpse into the trials and dangers that await settlers who moved into this mysterious new land, Texas. I would highly recommend reading this book and the others in his series!
