Review
“Finish the Mission issues a clarion reminder of God’s enduring passion to glorify himself by blessing all nations on earth. The gospel and mission are inseparable. A clear understanding of the mission of the church is absolutely essential in today’s fast-changing global environment.”
—Steve Richardson, President, Pioneers-USA
“What will it take to finish the mission? Gospel seed must fall into the ground and die. Lord Jesus, through these heart-exposing pages, would you thrust out thousands of risk-taking disciples to the ends of the earth? May this compelling admonition jolt the church out of complacency and into the gathering of your sheep from among the earth’s peoples.”
—David Sitton, President, To Every Tribe; author, Reckless Abandon and To Every Tribe with Jesus
“God defines marriage and God defines mission. Finish the Mission is a vital proclamation of an emphasis that even evangelicals dodge—mostly out of embarrassment. Putting God’s opinions above all others, the authors portray well God’s rescue operation to the peoples who still have no friend to help them comprehend the Easter story. As John Piper says, ’We’re concerned for all suffering, but especially eternal suffering.’ Serious disciples will take these declarations seriously.”
—Greg Livingstone, Founder, Frontiers; Coordinator, Ministries to Muslims, Evangelical Presbyterian Church

Not An Ordinary Missions Book
By Dottie Parish
Finish the Mission is an excellent book about the church reaching every tribe, and tongue and nation - finishing the mission. But the book is so much more than this. Many Christians do not connect worship and missions. This book makes clear that worship is what it's all about. Davis Mathis states in the introduction "The outcome of missions is all peoples delighting to praise Jesus. And the motivation for missions is the enjoyment that his people have in him."
Louie Giglio, Michael Oh, David Platt, Michael Ramsden and Ed Stetzer write chapters in addition to those by Piper and Mathis. Giglio in Chapter 1, using Isaiah 6:8 "Whom shall I send?" conveys the fact Isaiah is hearing a voice from our incomprehensibly great God.
David Platt in Chapter 2 gives a biblical, sobering view of hell highlighting the lostness of so many.
Michael Ramsden in Chapter 3 gives a realistic view of the dangers of mission and challenges us to be courageous.
Michael Oh in Chapter 4 teaches from the Lord's Prayer the necessity for Christians to go "from every land and to every land." He describes how this is currently happening in various locations around the world.
Ed Stetzer in Chapter 5 challenges all of us to send or be sent, and to be missionaries where we are. He emphasizes we are to be gospel centered and Spirit empowered.
In the final chapter John Piper teaches on Psalm 62 "Let the nations be glad and sing for joy..." He comments on Islam as not worshipping God and suggests the reason we have been given material wealth is so we will reach the nations.
At the end of the book is a conversation with the authors and an appendix by Mathis on What Next? This is a challenge to the church and to all Christians to disciple others.
Mathis says in the introduction "This is no ordinary missions book." He's right about that. I highly recommend this to all who are ready for a challenge.

Decent Book, Lacks Focus
By Luke Haverkamp
Finish The Mission is a collection of chapters, written not only by John Piper and David Mathis, but a variety of other pastors and speakers. These chapters are based on talks originally given at the Desiring God National Conference. The title of the book gives us insight into its theme: the end of all missionary work when people from every tribe, tongue and nation are praising God before His throne. This book is not so much focused on what the mission is or the how the mission is accomplished, but why the mission exists. The theme is sometimes muddled by the variety of different contributors, but nevertheless discernible: God, the creator and redeemer of the universe is worthy.
My problem with the book comes not that it has a bad main point, but that I had to search to find that point. The book wasn't focused enough to leave me with any one thing to hold onto or something to get excited about. Although some of the chapters were good individually, the whole of the book didn't "set me on for joining God's global mission". There were glimpses of really powerful points, but they were not reinforced or analyzed. My favorite part of the book was the appendix What Next? Disciple A Few because it was compelling, but more than that, focused enough to leave me with something to hang onto. This was a decent book, but I couldn't recommend it as one of my favorites.

Great book by great authors!
By The Reformed Reader
Finish the Mission is a compellation of messages from Desiring God's 2011 National Conference. The theme of this particular conference is focused on spreading the gospel to the ends of the earth. The authors seek to sway the church to take the gospel to the unreached parts of the earth. The speakers of this conference are all known for writing or speaking on this particular issue. Finish the Mission seeks to demonstrate the necessity and hope of mission through given to us in Matthew 24:14 And "this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come." The mission of the Church is to take the gospel message to all peoples. Once the message has reached the ends of the earth Christ will return. The book also seeks to turn inverted churches outward. All too often churches become introverted and solely focus on their own problems. Focusing on and resolving, internal problems is extremely important, but it should never take place to the neglect of the expansion of the kingdom. Next, the book addressing the local church's responsibility to engage the world through church planting. These church plants become missional communities that reach out and transform their culture/communities.The book is a phenomenal book written by some of the best missiologist alive. The book is Christ-Centered, gospel rooted, missional, and extremely practical. The book also is packed with practical suggestions on how your church can engage and pick up the mission of the church.
