Foreword Congratulations on your new baby! You have now joined the long and respected chain of mothers and fathers stretching back to the very beginning of families. In many ways, caring for your new baby will be totally natural and instinctual. Yet, you will certainly have many questions . . . that's normal, too. Although parents today are the most educated in history, in many respects we are also the least experienced. Parents in the past had a whole network of support at hand. They usually had their parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles nearby in which to get help and advice. Also, as they grew up, they had lots of hands-on experience caring for younger siblings, cousins, and neighbors. Their hundreds of hours of tiny-tot training (from diaper duty to burping to rocking a child to sleep) really made them feel prepared for having their own newborn. But today's parents are different. We often live farther away from our baby-savvy relatives. And, as amazing as it sounds, many moms and dads barely have even held a baby before giving birth and being handed their own little bundle by the nurse. I don't know how much hands-on baby practice you have, but most parents I see in my practice have very little to none. Great book...

I've purchased two of these books...for two of my granddaughters...both first-time parents. They love the book and have used it a lot. I'd say that's a pretty good recommendation.

general info, not detailed enough

This book covers a lot of topics, but usually just gives general info that I could've found by typing the topic into any search engine. I have a few other books that I use much more often (what to expect the first year and baby's first year week by week).

Good info and well-written, but not comprehensive

I enjoyed reading through this book and it has some good reference information that I will probably use, but overall I would not give it a high rating because for an "A-Z" type reference book it does not have that many topics. I do like the approach that the authors take to child care, but there are probably better books out there.
