Inspired by childhood stories of Prester John and the Queen of Sheba, in 1966 Dervla Murphy bought Jock, an amiable pack-mule, and set off to trek across the highlands of this awesome but troubled land. She wandered south from the Red Sea shore to Sheba's Aksum and up onto the icy roof of Africa, the Semien mountains. From there she descended to the ruined palaces of Gondar and skirted the northern shore of Lake Tana before crossing the drought-afflicted high ranges to Lalibela. Having exchanged the exhausted Jock (named after her publisher) for an uncooperative donkey, Dervla completed her journey to Addis Ababa. The real achievement was not surviving three armed robberies or a mountainous one-thousand-mile trail, but rather Dervla's growing affection for and understanding of another race.

Dervla Murphy is a true traveler. She does not give a damn what anyone thinks, she shuns corporate sponsors (or perhaps they shun her, of have never heard of her to begin with), she throws caution to the wind, and she gets out there and does things. That is probably one reason why she is so unknown. She is perhaps the most uncommercial travel writer that exists today, but she has put her foot on almost every continent (Antarctica I am not sure of).
I bought this book off the pavement (literaly) in NYC, about 25 years ago. I consumed it immediately, and afterwards became a Dervla Murphy junky.
Dervla has a penchant for buying mules when she takes trips. She used them in the Andes, and here she is using Jock to cross Ethiopia from West to East.
She saddles him up with her stores and takes off with a crude map, some names scribbled on pieces of paper, and lots of willingness on her part to get out and see the world. What she gives us is great documentation.
She is not entirely un-ethnocentric in her observations. At times her frustrations with third world manners and customs shines through, but over all she is a very keen and balanced observer of the land through which she passes, and as an avid historian, we are graced with what happened in the same place hundreds or even thousands of years before, if there is such documentation.
In this book we have an intrepid Irish woman crossing the Ethiopia deserts and high plateau, alone, climbing the country's highest peak (which is almost 5,000 meters high), getting assaulted by "shifta," dealing with onery monks in Coptic monasteries, drinking fetid water from filthy holes because that is all that is available, and much, much more.

Probably the best.

This is probably the best book I have read on Ethiopia.Dervia's descriptions of rural Ethiopian life are spot on and if you venture out into rural Ethiopia today you will see in certain areas that not a lot has changed yet at the same time the book allows you to realize how far other aspects of Ethiopian life has changed since 1966
.One great example is the description of Bahir Dar back then and take a look at it now, boom town.Yet take some hikes in the hills and peaks of the Wag district and you will find life very similar to the tales honestly portrayed in this book.
It was truly a remarkable read thanks to the gifted talents of the author, her amazing sense of adventure, her courage and stamina.Anybody who spends time in Ethiopia will appreciate this trek through the highlands and for those who think they are on a a adventure tour will realize it is time to get out of the Land Cruisers and of the circuit.Long live Jock.

Adventure in Abyssinia

Published in 1968, this is a remarkable account of one woman's trek of over 1000 miles through Ethiopia. Accompanied only by her trusty mule, Jock, she tells of their adventures crossing the inhospitable terrain: ascending mountains, swimming across rivers, and the swamps and jungle around Lake Tana. The narrative, of course, is brought to life by her dealings with local people whom she encounters on the way, often sleeping in their compounds. She writes of the poverty, the bugs and disease; but also the interesting and amusing situations she encounters; and the dangers from hostile 'shiftas' (bandits.) And she describes beautiful scenery and magical moments.
The author's sense of humour shines out in her writing, at herself as much as the Ethiopians.
Rather less 'political' than her later work on Laos.
One finishes the book full of admiration for a colossal achievement by a solitary traveller, unfazed by the injuries and difficulties she suffers in this remote and impoverished country.
