Good start. Finally something different.

I am coming back to this. I've changed my mind. Up a star. After reading several other books. I Keep checking for book two. What's his face in the tunnels... there is more to the story. Now it's bugging me. I need to know! T Aaron Payton has a real thing going here.
Spoiler alert!
We should have been able to sluth out more of Oswald's plan rather than the lecture. The slug cult came out of nowhere and was a bit cheesy. Loved the the girls took care of business at the end.
Will watch for more books from Aaron!!

My first Steampunk story. I want much more.

I had never read Steampunk themed stories until now. My mind is now thirsty for so much more. The storyline storyline is so incredible yet in this genre of fiction, it is entirely believable. The characters are pretty well developed without going back to their childhoods. Also the way it blends together with another story of that time period is refreshing. Now I have to see what else this author provides. Bye

Really Enjoyed This One

Imagine an England in which Prince Albert didn't die, but was transformed into a woman and locked in the Tower due to the proof his "infidelity". Imagine an London with brothels filled with clockwork prostitutes. Imagine the Thames filled with unimaginable monsters. Imagine sections of London walled off due to uncontrollable alchemical reactions. Imagine you're a man whose best friend has been transformed into a woman.
This book was a fun read on a number of different levels. First of all, if you enjoy the growing steampunk genre, this book will be right up your alley. It's set in Victorian England, one in which alchemy is not a discredited science but a driving engine of new technology. If you are a fan of the detective novel, there is an English nobleman with an interest in criminology and an over-fondness for the bottle. In the "empowered women" category, there is the intrepid female reporter pushing against the artificial limits imposed on her gender. For fans of romance there is the question of what happens when a marriage of convenience is no longer convenient? For fans of horror, what is the definition of a monster? Wrapping all around it is the off-the-wall premise of an epidemic of a sexually-transmitted disease that causes a complete gender switch and how a society copes with that.
For lovers of literature, the book is threaded with Easter eggs incorporating classic literary characters; I got a kick as I read it when I realized what was being referenced, and I enjoyed how it was worked into the storyline.
This is one of those stories where there is always something happening and you enjoy going along for the ride. I liked the characters and their problems, and liked the fact that I got a good sense of time and place when reading the story; sometimes authors just give a sketchy outline of locales, but this book was very visual in its descriptions.
Do give this book a try. I'm looking forward to more from this author.
