Fredson Bowers was a professor of literature at the University of Virginia for more than forty years and a preeminent textual critic.

Great (!!!!) Book

This is a great read, though not one for the feint of heart (or the feint of attention span). The plot is slow to get moving, and there are long detours that a pragmatic reader might find frustrating. But, once the plot gets going, it is truly a masterpiece. My first time through Tom Jones, I stayed up all night to read the last couple hundred pages, because I literally couldn't put it down.

the greatest works benefit from emendations where they do not require ...

The most important factor for the Kindle version of the Modern Library Classics edition of Tom Jones is how well the critical apparatus is handled. It is, in general, handled very well. Footnotes work. The process of reading emendations on an electronic device will never be as seamless as reading with physical paper, and any 18th century work requires emendations. Additionally, the greatest works benefit from emendations where they do not require them. The good news is that the Modern Library edition is very good. The notes are explanatory, scholarly, and never abstruse. The "Introduction," maps, and other material are placed at the end for the Kindle edition, and they do not fare particularly well.
If you have already read Tom Jones, this is a great way to have it in a portable format. If you are a person who knows what Tom Jones is and wants to read it, this is an affordable way to read a "real" (scholarly) edition. If, however, you mean to study Tom Jones, you will likely need a paper copy, and probably Battestin's edition.

One of the most hilarious love stories ever committed to writing

What a wonderful, wonderful book! Brimming with life, wit and a great deal of genuine wisdom about human nature and its follies, I can clearly understand why Somerset Maugham called Tom Jones one of the world's ten greatest novels, right up there with War and Peace and Moby Dick. The characters practically jump off the page at you as Fielding brings 18th century England vividly to life in what has to be one of the most hilarious love stories ever committed to writing. This is a book that I know I will come back to many times, whenever I need a break from the realities of this hyped-up 21st century world we live in.
